3 Major Takeaways
Your “why” is your foundation. Without it, success becomes survival instead of growth.
Purpose brings clarity. When you know your why, you’ll know what deserves your yes — and what deserves your no.
Purpose evolves with you. Your “why” will grow as your life and business do, and that’s perfectly okay.
Purpose Over Profit: Why Your “Why” Changes Everything
Hey Queens, welcome back to another episode of Boss to Boss Female Entrepreneurs Elevations podcast with Dr. Brenda where we rise, build, and shine as women in business and in life. I’m your host Dr. Brenda and today we’re talking about something that sits right at the core of everything we do as entrepreneurs, finding our why. Now this topic is personal to me because discovering my why changed everything.
It took me from simply working hard to working with purpose and that’s a shift that will take you further than hustling can ever take you. Knowing your why, that’s very important, knowing your why. So grab a cup of coffee, a journal, or anything that fuels your soul because today we’re going deep into your purpose.
So let’s get started. Why your why matters. I’m going to talk about that.
Let’s talk about that. Why your why matters. So let’s start with the simple truth.
Being an entrepreneur, it’s not easy. It is not easy. There are long nights, there are setbacks, there are rejections, and moments where quitting feels easy.
I mean quitting feels easier than continuing sometimes, probably most of the time, but if you don’t know why you’re doing it, those moments will break you. Those moments of feeling like you want to quit, like you want to give up, they’ll break you if you don’t know your why. Okay, your why is your foundation.
It’s very important. You have to have a stable foundation for anything to grow, right? So your why is your foundation. It’s the reason you get up.
You know, it’s the reason you do anything. The fire that keeps you burning, that’s your why. You know, when everything else feels cold, your why is the fire that keeps you burning.
It’s what gives you meaning to work. You know, it gives you the meaning to everything that you do is your why. That’s the reason why you do everything is your why.
You have to have a why because if you don’t have a why, you can easily stop. You can easily stop. Now, a lot of people confuse their why with their goals.
Those are two different things. They’re separate. You know, yeah, we have our goals, but your why is different from your goals.
Goals are what you want to achieve. Your why is why you want to achieve those goals, right? They’re both great things and you definitely need both of them, but your why is why you want to achieve your goals. For example, your goal might be to start a business and make six figures, but your why might be to create generational wealth, show your kids what was possible, or serve others through your gift, right? You have to have a reason why you want to make six figures.
You know, you have a reason why you want to do that. When you’re clear about the deeper reason, every decision, every sacrifice, every step, it starts to make sense and it becomes easier to do it when you know why you’re doing it, okay? So let me share a little bit about my own journey into my why. When I first started as an entrepreneur, I was doing all the right things, building a business, checking all the boxes, staying busy, but I often felt exhausted and frustrated and unsure if I was really making a difference, if what I was doing was, you know, helping somebody or if what I was doing was what I was supposed to do.
It wasn’t until I like sat down one day and I asked myself, Brenda, why are you really doing this, you know? And that question changed everything. My why wasn’t about money or success. My why was about legacy.
It was about creating opportunities, not just for myself, but for my family, for other women like me who wanted more out of life, and for generational wealth, and for dreamers, you know, others watching me from the sidelines. I wanted to help those women. I wanted to help those people, you know? So once I got clear about that, every obstacle became a test of commitment, not a signal to quit, you know? When doors closed, I reminded myself this isn’t just about me.
It’s about my purpose. That mindset pushed me past fear, rejection, and even self-doubt because my why was bigger than my pain. That clarity helped me on so many levels.
When I became clear about my why, that helped me realize that my why was bigger than my pain, okay? Let’s talk about the power of purpose. The power of purpose. Purpose gives you direction.
It’s kind of like a GPS. It gives you direction. Even when you make a wrong turn, it helps you find your way back.
Knowing your purpose, it helps you find your way back. You know, when you’re in a car and you have your GPS on, and she’s telling you the way to go, and if you take a wrong turn, it’ll redirect you. The GPS will redirect you when you get off track, right? So knowing your purpose, it’ll redirect you.
You know, when you get off track, your purpose will help you get back on track. Something in you will say, okay, you’re going off track. Let’s get you back to where you’re supposed to go.
That’s what knowing your purpose will do. So you got knowing your why, and you got the power of knowing your purpose, okay? So when your business is rooted in purpose, you attract opportunities that align with your values. You build relationships that last, and you serve people who connect you with your mission, not just with your product, okay? So your purpose puts you in place with the people or with opportunities that’s going to align you with your values, okay? Purpose-driven entrepreneurs don’t burn out the same way others do, because they’re fueled by something deeper than profit.
They’re fueled by passion and alignment. I’ll say that again. Purpose-driven entrepreneurs don’t burn out the same way others do, because they’re fueled by something deeper than profit.
They’re fueled by passion and alignment. Now here’s the truth. When your why is clear, your how becomes easier.
Wow, that’s strong. When your why is clear, your how becomes easier. You make better decisions, you start saying no to what doesn’t fit, and yes to what truly matters, okay? When you know your why, man, that gives you so much clarity, because sometimes when you don’t know your why, you don’t know your reason, you don’t know your purpose, you’ll accept anything.
You’ll be like, okay, I can do that. Yes, you’ll say yes to anything. You know, sometimes we’re invited to a whole lot of things.
Sometimes we’re given opportunities to do some things that really doesn’t go along with, you know, our purpose or our path. And we’ll say yes, but we really shouldn’t be saying no. So we know your why.
You know, you don’t know what to say yes to, or you don’t know what to say no to. So knowing your why, it gives you clarity to understand what truly matters, okay? So let’s talk about a practical takeaway. Let’s talk about clarity.
Let’s talk about clarifying your why. Okay? Just a simple exercise that will help you clarify your why. So grab a notebook and write down these three questions.
I’ll give you a second to grab a notebook. This is awesome. This is going to be some information that’s going to really help you today.
So grab your notebook, write down these three questions. Question number one, what truly motivates me to be on money or recognition? Question number one, what truly motivates me beyond money or recognition? Okay, think about what makes your heart light up or what breaks your heart enough to take action? Okay, question number one. Question number two, who am I doing this for? Who am I doing this for? Okay, think about it.
Are you doing it for yourself, your family, your community, your future clients, or maybe even a younger version of you who dreamed of it? Wow, that’s deep. Who are you doing this for? Then question number three. If I had to start over from scratch, what purpose would still pull me forward? If I had to start over from scratch, what purpose would still pull me forward? This helps you see what really drives you beneath the surface.
Okay? Now, once you’ve written down your answers, look for the theme. That’s where your why lives. So if something is a common denominator, and all of those answers, then that’s your why.
Then take it a step further. Write a short why statement. Okay, write a short why statement.
It would be something like, my purpose is to help women step into their power and create businesses that build freedom for their families. That’s actually my why. But your why can sound something like that.
Read that again. My purpose is to help women step into their power and create businesses that build freedom for their families. Okay? Now, you write your why statement, and put that statement somewhere where you will see it every day.
You can put it on your mirror, on your laptop, on your vision board, because your why is another anchor when life gets hard. Okay? I do a vision board every year. And I’m telling you, when I see things come to fruition that I have on my vision board, that is an awesome feeling.
Because that means that I’ve accomplished something. That means that something that I’ve dreamed of, something that I’ve worked hard for, something that goes to, you know, my why I’m doing it. My purpose has come to pass.
So I’m excited about that. And if you haven’t done vision boards before, vision boards are awesome. They are a sense of accomplishment.
They give you a great feeling. So I would suggest, you know, this new year, end of the year, do your vision board, either January one for the beginning of the new year, do a vision board, you’ll be glad you did. Okay? So finding your why isn’t a one time event.
It’s a lifelong discovery. As you grow, your purpose may evolve, you know. But it will always guide you.
Your purpose is going to guide you. Remember, in the beginning, we talked about what our purpose was. That purpose is going to guide you.
And, you know, like I say, it might evolve, it might change. But as long as you have a purpose and a why, you know, you’ll know why you’re doing what you’re doing. So, you know, if you’re feeling stuck, if you’re feeling tired, a question in your path, go back and visit your why.
Go back and visit your why. That’s where your truth lives in your why. And you can change it.
It’s not etched in stone. It’s not like what your why is in the beginning has to be what your why is like forever. You know, it’s okay to change your mind.
It’s okay to switch up. As long as you have a why and a purpose, you will understand why you’re doing what you’re doing. Okay? So just remember this, you’re not just building a business, you’re building legacy, impact, and freedom.
So stay focused, stay grounded, and keep rising. Okay? Before we wrap up today’s episode, I want you to take a moment to share something straight from your heart. Everything I create from my books, my journals, my courses, my merchandise, it’s more than just a product.

That book is about my life. It talks about how I turned failure into fuel. I used the things that I felled from, and I turned it into fuel to catapult me into success.
You know, I talk about in the book, if I stayed in a position of failure, which that means if I had just been, you know, stayed in a position of defeat, I would not have gotten to a position of success. So we have to pick ourselves up when bad things happen and keep going. Sometimes it’s hard to do that.
Sometimes it’s hard to do that, but if we’re strong, and if we, you know, have a mindset of a winner, you know, we’ll do it. It might take a minute, but we’ll eventually get there. So that book is motivation for anybody who’s ever gone through anything.
Divorce, losing a job, you know, whatever the case may be, is something to motivate you and to show you how I did it, and you can do it too. So let’s stay connected, okay?
