The Cold Truth: The Mysterious Death of Kenneka Jenkins

You’re listening to the Urban City True Crime Podcast, presented by UrbanCityPodcast.com  where real stories meet real questions, told from the heart of our communities.

Tonight, we take a look back at one of the most haunting and confusing cases of the last decade — the mysterious death of Kenneka Jenkins, a 19-year-old Chicago woman whose final moments inside a hotel freezer continue to raise more questions than answers.

This is The Cold Truth: The Kenneka Jenkins Hotel Freezer Case.

The Night Begins

It was the night of September 8th, 2017, in Rosemont, Illinois, a quiet suburb just outside Chicago. Nineteen-year-old Kenneka Jenkins told her mother, Teresa Martin, that she was going out with friends to celebrate a new job.

The girls ended up at the Crown Plaza Chicago O’Hare Hotel, room 926, for a small kickback that turned into a late-night party. Videos later surfaced on social media showing Kenneka smiling, dancing, and appearing slightly intoxicated. But nothing in those clips could’ve predicted what would happen next.

Sometime after 3 a.m., Kenneka’s friends realized she was missing. Her phone, car keys, and jacket were left behind. They searched, they called, but she was nowhere to be found.

The Search Begins

By 4 a.m., panic set in. Kenneka’s friends reached out to her mother, Teresa. She immediately drove to the hotel, demanding answers. Hotel staff told her they couldn’t release surveillance footage without a police report.

Rosemont police were eventually contacted, but initially, the response was slow. Officers suggested Kenneka may have just run off or was sleeping it off somewhere. But Teresa knew her daughter. Something didn’t feel right.

For nearly 24 hours, family and friends begged for help, calling, posting online, even searching the hotel themselves.

The Discovery

It wasn’t until the following night, September 9th, 2017, around 12:24 a.m., that hotel staff made a grim discovery.

Inside a walk-in freezer, located in a closed-off area of the hotel’s kitchen, lay the body of Kenneka Jenkins. She was alone, face down, with no sign of struggle nearby.

Police later released surveillance footage showing what appeared to be Kenneka stumbling through the hotel’s hallways, disoriented, seemingly under the influence, eventually walking toward the area where the freezer was located.

But that footage only raised more questions. Why was a restricted kitchen area unlocked? Why didn’t hotel security respond sooner? And how did a young woman, heavily intoxicated, manage to open a heavy industrial freezer door on her own?

The Investigation and Public Outcry

When the autopsy report was released, it ruled Kenneka’s death an accidental hypothermia, noting alcohol and medication in her system.

But the public wasn’t convinced. The internet exploded with theories, some claiming foul play, others pointing fingers at her friends, or suggesting a cover-up by the hotel.

Protesters gathered outside the Crown Plaza for weeks, demanding transparency. Kenneka’s mother, Teresa Martin, said she didn’t believe the official story, insisting that her daughter didn’t just walk herself into a freezer.

Questions about the investigation’s handling, from delayed police response to missing surveillance time stamps, fueled nationwide debate about justice, negligence, and accountability.

Aftermath and Reflection

Over the years, the Kenneka Jenkins case has become a symbol not only of tragedy, but of distrust between communities and institutions. It sparked discussions about how missing Black women are treated by law enforcement, how social media fuels investigations, and how quickly the truth can get buried under conspiracy.

Teresa Martin filed a lawsuit against the hotel, its security, and staff, eventually reaching a settlement in 2023. But for Kenneka’s family, no dollar amount replaces answers or peace.

Six years later, her name still echoes through Chicago. And the question still lingers — what really happened inside that freezer?
