Urban City News: Emmys, Global Conflicts, U.S. Politics, and Weekend Events

Hello Kindred. Good morning, good afternoon or good evening, wherever you’re tuning in. This is Urban City News, your station for headlines that inform, stories that inspire and a perspective that motivates you to live with purpose.

I’m your host, Dr. Mary Michelle, and here are today’s top stories. In that ever-so-entertaining world of celebrity news, at the 2025 Primetime Emmys, the Traitors won Outstanding Reality Competition. Host Alan Cumming credited the cast and audience for bringing joy in dark times.

Urban City Fam, have you been watching The Traitors? Which contestant shocked you the most this season? Drop your thoughts and tag us at UrbanCityPodcast. And actress Leslie Bibb turned heads in a black Armani Privé gown at the Emmys, but admitted she could hardly breathe. It’s part of Armani’s final couture collection.

Urban City Fam, have you ever worn something stunning but totally impractical? Share your fashion pain stories and tag us at UrbanCityPodcast. As we broaden our scope globally, international news outlets reveal that Garza is on the minds of many for more than reasons expected. At the Emmys red carpet recently, Javier Bardem called the conflict in Garza genocide, urging sanctions and stronger global action.

The bold statement has stirred debate across social media and diplomatic circles that continue to heighten attention on the struggle-laden area. Also, Burkina Faso is being both celebrated and criticized after it criminalized homosexuality. On September 2nd, Burkina Faso’s transitional government passed a law criminalizing homosexuality in its civil code.

The legislation carries two to five years in prison and fines for promoting homosexuality with deportation for non-citizens. Human rights groups are warning this law will intensify persecution against LGBTQ plus communities and undo years of progress toward inclusion. Advocates call it one of the harshest anti-LGBTQ plus laws in Africa to date.

Some black Americans, however, say this very law makes them want to become expatriates even more. Back here in the United States, national news reports show that Nevada Democratic strategists are advising candidates to lean on economic issues over cultural war debates ahead of midterms. The goal? Connect with working-class voters.

Plus, NOAA will host a California-Nevada climate webinar on September 22nd, focusing on drought trends and water resource planning. Farmers, policymakers, and residents are urged to tune in. Urban CityFound, what matters more when you cast your ballot? Money in your pocket or cultural values? And how is climate change showing up where you live? Tell us what drives your vote and what climate changes matter to you.

This is a legal and political check on executive power over the Federal Reserve that needs to be watched. Urban CityFound, what do you think about the sitting president’s recent actions, this one included? Share your opinions and tag us at UrbanCityPodcast. And the first U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the administration may proceed with terminating humanitarian parole protections for migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, affecting roughly 430,000 people.

Why is this something you should care about? This is a significant shift in immigration policy, humanitarian rights, and legal protections that obviously only affect people of color. No one can honestly deny there is targeting going on now. UrbanCityFound, what do you think about the fact that there are no limits, restrictions, or terminations related to immigrants and migrants from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East? Express what you’re concluding is taking place and tag us at UrbanCityPodcast.

In state news, our focus today is Nevada. In the Silver State, hotel occupancy, entertainment ticket sales, and restaurant traffic are all up across the Strip after a sluggish summer. City leaders say Las Vegas tourism is rebounding strongly, boosting local tax revenue.

And Reno officials have approved Accessory Dwelling Units, ADUs, on residential properties to ease housing shortages. These smaller homes could provide affordable options, though infrastructure and zoning challenges remain. Now, Kindred, it’s time to see what kind of fun is waiting to be had this weekend.

The iHeartRadio Music Festival takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada this weekend, kicking off today, September 19th, and ending tomorrow, the 20th. It’s two nights of blockbuster performances from top music stars across pop, rock, and hip-hop. This is a must-attend for families and fans in the entertainment capital of the world.

In Honolulu, Hawaii, the Honolulu Night Market takes place Saturday, September 20th. This is Hawaii’s popular annual night market that’s complete with food trucks, island-style nightlife, artisan crafts, and live DJs. The event transforms Honolulu’s streets into a vibrant festival under the stars.

And the NAS Oceana Air Show is happening today and tomorrow in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Held September 20th through 21st, the Navy’s premier air show features precision flying teams, modern fighter demonstrations, and historic aircraft. Open to families, aviation enthusiasts, and the public.

Urban City Fam, which of these events is your vibe? Music, nightlife, or aviation thrills? And if you attend, share your pics and tag us at Urban City Podcast. We’d love to feature your highlights. Kindred.
