Falcons Hand San Francisco Its First Loss of the Season

The Atlanta Falcons finally gave their home crowd a day to remember.

Atlanta beat San Francisco 29 to 20 on Sunday at Mercedes Benz Stadium.

San Francisco arrived unbeaten at 6 and 0 on the season.

Atlanta arrived at 2 and 4 and searching for belief.

By the final whistle, the Falcons had their first home win.

They also had a win that can change a whole season.

Michael Penix Jr. played clean and calm football all afternoon long.

He completed 25 of 34 passes for 213 yards on Sunday.

He threw three touchdown passes and never threw an interception.

Atlanta forced four turnovers and protected the ball all afternoon.

That simple math decided a game few expected Atlanta to win.

“That’s a great recipe for winning in this league,” Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski said.

Atlanta Turned a 14 to 3 Hole Into a 23 Point Run

San Francisco scored first on a drive built around Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey capped it with a 1 yard touchdown run on fourth down.

Rookie Zachariah Branch answered with a long kick return for Atlanta.

His return reached the San Francisco 36 and set up early points.

Nick Folk kicked a 39 yard field goal to trim the lead.

Kaelon Black then broke free for a 30 yard touchdown run.

It was the first touchdown of his young professional career.

San Francisco led 14 to 3 early in the second quarter.

McCaffrey left soon after with a thigh injury for medical checks.

Atlanta seized the opening and marched 68 yards in ten plays.

Penix found tight end Nick Muse for a 1 yard touchdown.

It was the first touchdown catch of the Muse career.

Folk missed the extra point, so the deficit stayed at five points.

San Francisco then fumbled away a drive that threatened to restore control.

Black lost the ball, and Gervon Dexter Sr. recovered for Atlanta.

Folk drilled a 33 yard field goal as the half expired.

Atlanta went to the locker room down just 14 to 12.

Penix and the Tight Ends Took Over After Halftime

Atlanta opened the third quarter with a real statement drive.

The Falcons went 59 yards in ten plays to grab the lead.

Penix hit Kyle Pitts Sr. for a 5 yard touchdown pass.

The score put Atlanta ahead 19 to 14 for good.

Pitts caught all five passes thrown his way in the win.

He also reached 300 career receptions during the game on Sunday.

That made him the sixth youngest tight end in league history to get there.

The game fell on National Tight Ends Day across the league.

Muse scored first, and Pitts scored the go ahead touchdown after halftime.

“We will cherish that moment,” Pitts said of the Muse touchdown.

Jessie Bates III then intercepted Brock Purdy at the Atlanta 10.

Atlanta answered with a 90 yard drive that broke San Francisco.

Penix found Drake London for a 21 yard touchdown strike.

The touchdown came on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Atlanta led 26 to 14 after scoring 23 straight points.

Daniels Closed the Door Every Time San Francisco Knocked

San Francisco still had chances to steal the game back late.

A long review wiped out an apparent touchdown pass to Jordan Watkins.

Za’Darius Smith then sacked Purdy on fourth down to end that threat.

Purdy answered with a 1 yard touchdown pass to Kyle Juszczyk.

That score cut the Atlanta lead to 26 to 20 late.

Eddy Pineiro missed the extra point, and the margin stayed at six.

Atlanta then shanked a punt and handed San Francisco one more chance.

Rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels ended it with the play of the day.

Daniels intercepted Purdy with 2 minutes and 34 seconds left in regulation.

He returned the ball to the San Francisco 19 yard line.

Folk added a 31 yard field goal for a two score lead.

Daniels still was not done with his career afternoon.

Bates punched the ball loose from George Kittle in the final minute.

Daniels recovered that fumble, and the upset was sealed for good.

Daniels finished with a team high 11 tackles in the win.

One week earlier, Daniels had been carted off with a neck injury.

His return game will live in Atlanta memory for a long time.

San Francisco Beat Itself as Much as Atlanta Beat It

Purdy threw for 288 yards on 27 of 40 passing Sunday.

He threw two interceptions as the pressure kept building on him.

San Francisco lost two fumbles to go with the two picks.

The 49ers had just six turnovers in their first six games.

They nearly matched that total in one sloppy afternoon of football.

Atlanta scored 13 points off the four San Francisco turnovers.

San Francisco played without Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel Sr. again.

Its receiver room leaned on Watkins and Jacob Cowing for production.

Watkins caught three passes for 56 yards in the loss.

Kittle caught eight passes for 88 yards to lead the team.

McCaffrey finished with 39 rushing yards and 61 receiving yards.

He missed much of the first half and never regained his rhythm.

“Any time you have four turnovers like that and you get zero, it’s real tough to win,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “Too sloppy to win.”

San Francisco also drew seven penalties for 55 yards in defeat.

Why This Win Lands Differently in Atlanta

Atlanta is a Black city that lives and breathes football culture.

Its young Black quarterback just outplayed an unbeaten team at home.

Penix spread his three scores among two tight ends and London.

Bijan Robinson added 63 rushing yards and steady work all day.

Black playmakers led an Atlanta defense that refused to break late.

“We came out here and showcased what we are capable of,” defensive end Samson Ebukam said.

Visiting fans had been loud in this building all season long.

San Francisco fans forced Penix into silent counts in his own stadium.

A home win like this gives the home fans their building back.

Atlanta had already lost at home to Baltimore and Chicago this season.

The Falcons are now 3 and 4 with a real pulse again.

For a franchise chasing respect, beating a perfect team resonates everywhere.

Black Atlanta needed a Sunday like this, and the Falcons delivered.

What Comes Next for Both Teams

Atlanta visits Tampa Bay next Sunday with momentum at last.

San Francisco gets its bye week to heal and regroup now.

The 49ers then host Las Vegas on November 8 at home.

San Francisco still owns a 6 and 1 record after the loss.

Atlanta still sits below .500, but the gap feels different now.

One clean game from Penix changed the conversation around this team.

If the defense keeps taking the ball away, Atlanta can climb.

The upset joined our Bethune Cookman stunner over Jackson State as a signature weekend result.
