The scans told the story Washington feared. Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed Tuesday that Terry McLaurin tore the patellar tendon in his left knee in Monday night’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers, an injury that ends the season of the Commanders’ captain and top wide receiver.

Major Takeaways

  • Dan Quinn confirmed Tuesday that Terry McLaurin tore the patellar tendon in his left knee and is out for the season.
  • McLaurin will have surgery to repair the tendon after going down in the first quarter on Monday night.
  • He closes 2026 as Washington’s leading receiver, with 15 catches for 230 yards and one touchdown in five games.
  • Stefon Diggs now becomes the top target for Jayden Daniels as Washington regroups during its bye week.

The Moment That Silenced the Sideline

Late in the first quarter on Monday night, McLaurin ran a third down route toward the sideline in coverage against 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir.

His left knee buckled as he planted his foot. He went down in clear pain near the Commanders bench and stayed down while trainers rushed in.

Trainers fitted his left leg with a full air cast. McLaurin climbed into the back of the cart under his own power, and players from both teams gathered to see him off.

He had one catch for 27 yards before the injury, a grab that helped set up a field goal. Washington ruled him out quickly and went on to lose the game 23 to 17.

Quinn Delivers the News Nobody Wanted

Quinn said after the game on Monday that the team feared the injury was “significant.” An MRI back in Washington on Tuesday confirmed the tear.

“I had a chance to speak to him last night on the plane, and again after testing today,” Quinn said. “I’m gutted for him.”

“He’s a captain and one of our real leaders,” Quinn said. “We are all here to support him.”

“Man, he brings a lot on and off the field,” Quinn added. “It’s a big hit, and we’ll lean on a number of guys.”

Jayden Daniels did not dress it up after the loss. Watching McLaurin suffer a brutal injury, he said, “it sucks.”

What Washington Loses Without Terry McLaurin

McLaurin finishes his eighth season, all of them in Washington, with 15 catches for 230 yards and one touchdown. He averaged 15.3 yards per catch and still leads the team in receiving yards.

The career numbers tell the bigger story. In 112 games, every one of them a start, McLaurin has 513 catches for 7,191 yards and 42 touchdowns.

He topped 1,000 receiving yards in five straight seasons from 2020 through 2024. In 2024 he posted 1,096 yards and a franchise record 13 touchdown catches, earning second team All Pro honors and his second Pro Bowl.

Numbers only carry so far, though. McLaurin is the standard in that locker room, a captain who produced through coaching changes, quarterback chaos and three team names without ever asking out of Washington.

Daniels Must Grow Up Fast

The bye week gives Quinn and his staff time to rebuild the passing plan. Washington returns home to face the Philadelphia Eagles on November 1, and we broke down how Monday night unfolded in our full recap of the 49ers win over Washington.

Stefon Diggs moves to the front of the line. The veteran signed a one year deal with Washington after catching 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns with New England in 2025.

Treylon Burks flashed on Monday night, setting season highs across the board as Daniels looked his way with the game on the line. Antonio Williams, Luke McCaffrey, Dyami Brown and Jaylin Lane will all see bigger roles.

The timing cuts deep across the division. Philadelphia just lost quarterback Jalen Hurts for the season as well, a blow we covered in full in our report on the Hurts ruling. Two rivals limp toward November 1, each missing a face of its offense.

A Hard Road Back at 31

McLaurin turned 31 in September. He is in the first year of a three year, $96 million extension signed in August 2025, with two seasons left on the deal after this one.

Monday was his second game back after sitting out Week 4 with a hamstring injury. He missed seven games last season with a quad strain, a sharp break from the run of 2021 through 2024, when he played every single game.

A torn patellar tendon means a long rehab, and Washington has announced no timetable for his return. What matters now is the surgery, the work that follows, and a captain attacking both the way he has attacked everything else in his career.

More Than a Receiver in the DMV

The McLaurin story started in Indianapolis, where he won Indiana Mr. Football at Cathedral High School before starring at Ohio State. Washington took him in the third round of the 2019 draft, and the DMV claimed him as its own.

Through his foundation, McLaurin invests in disadvantaged kids across the Washington metro area. On the field, he gave a struggling franchise credibility. Off the field, he gave its young fans a reason to believe the team still stood for something.

That is why this one hurts beyond the depth chart. For a community that has watched its team cycle through names, coaches and quarterbacks, Terry McLaurin was the constant.

Prayers up for Terry. Urban City Podcast will follow every step of his road back.
