Major Takeaways
- CNN reports the US military has new strike plans for Iran that include possible use of the GBU 43/B MOAB, the mother of all bombs.
- The plans could hit Iranian energy sites and nuclear facilities before or after the Nov 3 midterms, if Trump gives the order.
- Military sources doubt the bomb can crack deep underground targets, and warn of civilian harm.
- For Black families, escalation means higher fuel prices and more risk for loved ones in uniform.
The United States may be about to reach for the biggest bomb in its non nuclear arsenal. New reporting says the Pentagon has drawn up strike plans for Iran that include the weapon known as the mother of all bombs.
CNN broke the story on Thursday, citing multiple US officials familiar with the planning. The plans are not final orders. They are options on the table if President Donald Trump decides to resume combat operations.
This comes one day after Iran sank two ships in the Strait of Hormuz, an attack Urban City Podcast covered as tensions in the region keep climbing.
What the reporting says
According to CNN, the plans call for possible strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear sites. One official said Trump ordered the military to prepare packages that hit a lot of energy infrastructure.
The possible targets include Pickaxe Mountain, a fortified site near the Natanz nuclear facility where US and Israeli officials believe Tehran has stored parts of its nuclear program. There has never been public proof of nuclear activity at that specific site.
The timing could come before or after the Nov 3 midterm elections. Trump said publicly he would hold off on new strikes until after voters go to the polls. But CNN reports his own advisers are not sure that promise will hold.
The planning language is striking. One source said the strikes could come prior to US retrograde in CENTCOM area of responsibility. In plain terms, that means hit hard, declare victory, and pull forces out fast.

The bomb itself
The GBU 43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast, or MOAB, is the largest non nuclear bomb in the US arsenal. It weighs 21,600 pounds and can destroy an area equal to nine city blocks.
It is a GPS guided air blast weapon. It explodes just above the ground to push a massive shockwave in every direction. The US has used it in combat only once, in 2017, against ISIS tunnels in Afghanistan. Trump was the president who ordered that strike.
Do not confuse it with the GBU 57 bunker buster, a different weapon the US reportedly used against the Fordow nuclear site in June 2025. The MOAB is built for surface destruction, not deep penetration.
That is why some military planners doubt it would work on Iran. One source told CNN the MOAB is a massive information operation type weapon, great for clearing huge areas but not much else. It is not designed as a deep penetration warhead.
Pickaxe Mountain is believed to be shielded by layers of granite. Sources say the MOAB likely cannot punch deep enough to destroy what is buried there. Its huge blast radius also raises fears of civilian deaths, especially near populated areas.

What this means for Black America
Wars overseas always land hardest at home, and Black families feel the impact first. The morning after new strikes, oil markets spike. Fuel prices rise. Groceries cost more.
Urban City Podcast reported this week that record diesel prices are already squeezing Black households and independent truckers. New attacks on Iranian energy sites would push those prices even higher.
Then there are the people in uniform. Black Americans serve in the military at high rates. Every escalation means more risk for our sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters stationed in the region.
There is also the question of voice. This war is deeply unpopular with the American public. Black voters hold real power in the midterms. What Washington does before Nov 3 should answer to the people paying the price.
What happens next
The White House is not ruling anything out. An official told CNN that Trump keeps all options on the table to ensure Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. The Pentagon said it plans for a wide range of scenarios.
Reuters notes it could not independently verify the CNN report. That matters. Plans are not orders, and talk of a giant bomb can be a pressure tactic as much as a real intention.
Still, US troops in the region are rotating in the coming weeks, and some who leave may not be replaced. That is the kind of move you make before something big, or the kind you make when you are quietly heading for the exits.
Either way, the next move belongs to one man. And millions of families will live with what he decides.
