Inside the high stakes Florida meeting that may reshape Ukraine Russia relations and the future of global security

On December 28 2025 President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his Mar a Lago estate in Florida for one of the most important diplomatic meetings of the war in Ukraine since Russia invaded in 2022. This was not a photo op or a courtesy visit. It was a serious working session focused on ending a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people displaced millions and reshaped global politics.

The meeting came after weeks of behind the scenes diplomacy between Washington Kyiv and Moscow. Trump had spoken directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a long phone call before meeting Zelensky. That conversation helped shape what both sides brought to the table in Florida. When Zelensky arrived at Mar a Lago he was not coming to ask for more weapons. He was coming to talk about how the war could actually end.

Trump made it clear from the start that he believes the war must stop. He told reporters that both sides are closer than many people realize. Zelensky also struck an optimistic tone saying real progress had been made especially when it comes to protecting Ukraine from future Russian attacks.

The most important outcome of the meeting was agreement on security guarantees. Ukraine has been clear for years that it cannot agree to any peace deal unless it receives firm protection against another invasion. Zelensky does not want a pause that allows Russia to regroup and strike again. He wants a peace that lasts.

Trump and Zelensky said they are now aligned on what those guarantees should look like. That means Ukraine would receive strong commitments from the United States and European allies to defend its sovereignty if Russia violates a future agreement. This is similar to the kind of protection NATO provides even though Ukraine is not formally a NATO member.

Another major topic was economic reconstruction. Much of Ukraine has been devastated by the war. Cities have been flattened infrastructure destroyed and industries shut down. Trump and Zelensky discussed rebuilding Ukraine using international investment and possibly creating special economic zones in areas hardest hit by fighting. These zones could attract foreign businesses create jobs and give people a reason to stay instead of leaving the country.

They also discussed the idea of demilitarized areas in contested regions. These zones would be free of heavy weapons and large military forces. The goal would be to reduce the risk of sudden clashes while longer term political solutions are worked out.

After the meeting Trump and Zelensky spoke with European leaders. That matters because Europe will play a major role in enforcing and financing any peace agreement. Trump made it clear that European countries must carry more of the responsibility going forward rather than relying on American taxpayers alone.

While the meeting sounded positive there is still one massive problem that was not solved in Florida. Territory.

Russia currently controls parts of eastern and southern Ukraine including areas taken after the invasion. Putin has said repeatedly that Russia should keep these lands. Ukraine says absolutely not. This is the heart of the conflict. Until that question is resolved there is no true peace.

Trump acknowledged that this is the hardest issue. Zelensky did not commit to giving up any land. What that means is both sides are still holding their ground for now. Diplomats will have to figure out whether a compromise is possible or whether some areas will remain disputed for years.

Another critical issue is that Russia was not in the room. Trump spoke to Putin but there was no Russian delegation at Mar a Lago. That means nothing is final. No matter how much Trump and Zelensky agree Russia has to sign on for a deal to actually work.

Putin has been cautious and in some cases openly skeptical of Western backed peace plans. He wants sanctions lifted and wants guarantees that Ukraine will not join Western military alliances. Whether he is willing to accept security guarantees for Ukraine remains an open question.

So what does this meeting really mean for future peace

First it shows that serious talks are finally happening. For a long time the war was stuck in a cycle of fighting and frozen diplomacy. This meeting broke that pattern. Leaders are now publicly talking about how to end the war not just how to win it.

Second Ukraine now has stronger backing for its long term security. That changes the balance of power. Russia has often relied on the idea that Ukraine would eventually be left alone and vulnerable. If Ukraine is protected that strategy fails.

Third Europe is being pulled more directly into the process. That spreads the responsibility and makes any future agreement harder to ignore or violate.

But there are still real risks. Fighting continues on the ground. People are still dying. Without a ceasefire talks can collapse at any moment. And without a clear solution on territory any agreement could fall apart later.

This Mar a Lago meeting was not the end of the war. It was a step toward something that could become peace. Whether that peace happens depends on what comes next how flexible the leaders are and whether Russia decides it is time to stop.

For now what we saw was something rare in this conflict. A real attempt to move from bullets to diplomacy. And in a war that has brought so much destruction that alone matters.
