The Lord is Our Shepherd: A Message of Comfort and Strength

On the latest episode of Spiritual Lessons with Joanne, host JoAnne Bell takes listeners on an intimate and deeply moving journey through Psalm 23, one of the most cherished passages in the Bible.

With passion, wisdom, and personal testimony, JoAnne unpacks each verse, revealing the profound meaning behind David’s words and how they apply to the trials and victories of everyday life.

The Power of Psalm 23

Many have heard Psalm 23 before, but few take the time to truly live in its promises. JoAnne begins by reciting the passage from the New King James Version, setting the foundation for the episode.

She reminds listeners that this psalm is more than poetic words—it is a divine declaration of protection, provision, and peace.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

JoAnne explains that these simple yet profound words encapsulate God’s role as a provider, protector, and ever-present guide.

Just as a shepherd tends to his flock, ensuring they are safe and well-fed, God does the same for His children. He is always watching, always caring, and always leading.

The Invitation to Rest: Learning to Be Still

JoAnne passionately emphasizes the importance of resting in God’s presence.

“He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.”

In a world that glorifies hustle and grind, she reminds listeners that true peace comes not from endless striving but from surrender.

She shares a personal testimony of how God physically and spiritually sat her down during a season of exhaustion.

When she resisted rest, her body and spirit became overwhelmed, leading her to realize that God Himself was calling her to be still.

“Sometimes, we don’t want to be still because we’re afraid of what we might hear or feel. But ignoring our pain doesn’t make it go away—it only makes it louder.”

Through this moment of vulnerability, JoAnne encourages her audience to embrace stillness, allowing God’s peace to restore, reset, and renew their weary souls.

Through the Valley: Finding Strength in Hardship

Perhaps the most striking part of Psalm 23 is its acknowledgment of the valleys of life. JoAnne delves into the verse:

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me.”

She reassures listeners that God never promised a life free of struggle, but He did promise His unwavering presence.

Whether facing loss, uncertainty, betrayal, or fear, His hand is always near. She recalls moments in her own life when God left the “99” to come after her, proving that His love is both personal and relentless.

Prepared for Greatness: Blessings in the Presence of Enemies

JoAnne’s breakdown of “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” is especially powerful.

She passionately explains that when God elevates you, not everyone will celebrate—but that does not mean the blessing is any less valid.

“God’s favor on your life isn’t dependent on people’s opinions. When He prepares a table for you, it’s for YOU. You don’t need approval—God already gave it.”

She warns against bitterness and the desire for revenge, reminding listeners that forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves.

Holding onto hurt only weighs us down, while letting go opens the door for healing, growth, and greater blessings.

My Cup Runs Over: Living in Overflow

As she nears the end of the episode, JoAnne highlights the beauty of God’s abundance.

“My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.”

This isn’t just about financial prosperity—it’s about spiritual wealth, joy, and having more than enough to share.

“What’s in your cup is for you. What overflows is for others. Share your testimony, your story, and your journey—because someone needs it.”

She reminds her audience that their blessings aren’t meant to be kept to themselves.

Every experience, every trial overcome, and every moment of faith is a testimony meant to inspire others.

A Call to Abide in His Presence

JoAnne closes the episode with a heartfelt prayer, inviting listeners to abide in God, trust in His plan, and embrace His peace.

She urges them to practice being in His presence daily, even if it’s through a single verse or a whispered prayer.

“God doesn’t require perfection—He requires relationship.”

With that final thought, JoAnne encourages her audience to walk in faith, knowing that God’s goodness and mercy will follow them, always.

Final Thoughts: Carrying the Message Forward

The message of Psalm 23 is timeless, but through Spiritual Lessons with Joanne, it comes alive in a way that resonates deeply with listeners.

JoAnne Bell’s passion for sharing God’s word is evident, and her ability to weave personal testimony with scripture creates an unforgettable spiritual experience.

For those searching for peace, direction, and a renewed sense of faith, this episode is a powerful reminder that God is always near, always guiding, and always ready to restore.

As JoAnne says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow you all the days of your life—walk in it, believe it, and share it.”

A Journey Through Faith and Inspiration

The latest episode of Spiritual Lessons with Joanne on the Urban City Podcast Network is a heartfelt exploration of Psalm 27. Joanne invites listeners to embrace faith, overcome fear, and dwell in the Lord’s presence. Her conversational tone and personal anecdotes breathe life into this timeless scripture, making it relatable to anyone seeking spiritual growth.

Psalm 27: An Exuberant Declaration of Faith

Joanne opens the episode by expressing her excitement about Psalm 27, describing it as “an exuberant declaration of faith.” She reflects on the verse, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” and encourages listeners to lean on God’s strength during life’s darkest moments.

Sharing her personal testimony, Joanne recounts a season of homelessness that tested her faith. “We lived in a hotel for six months,” she reveals. “But God covered us, protected us, and kept us. Even in those moments, I knew that the Lord was my light.” Her transparency offers hope to those navigating their own struggles.

Overcoming Fear with Faith

Joanne passionately discusses the importance of trusting God, even when fear tries to take hold. Drawing from scripture, she emphasizes, “Fear not, for God is with us wherever we go.” She shares how this truth sustained her during times of uncertainty, reminding listeners that God’s presence brings courage and peace.

With her signature warmth, Joanne adds, “Don’t let the faces of people intimidate you. God is your strength, and with Him on your side, you have nothing to fear.” This encouragement is a rallying cry for believers to walk boldly in faith.

Dwelling in the Presence of God

In the heart of the episode, Joanne highlights the transformative power of abiding in God’s presence. She quotes Psalm 27:4: “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that I will seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.” For Joanne, this scripture is an invitation to carve out intentional time with God, whether through prayer, worship, or quiet reflection.

She shares a poignant story of finding a “secret place” in the midst of life’s chaos. “For one of my friends, the bathroom is her secret place to pray and be still. Wherever you are, find your space and let God renew your spirit.”

Gratitude for God’s Faithfulness

As the episode progresses, Joanne shifts the focus to gratitude. She encourages listeners to thank God not only for the big blessings but also for the small, often overlooked moments. Reflecting on a time when she longed for jelly to accompany her toast, she says, “Even the smallest things that matter to us matter to God. He loves us that much.”

This story resonates deeply, illustrating how God’s faithfulness extends to every area of life. It’s a reminder that even in seemingly mundane moments, His love shines through.

Conclusion: Stay With God

The episode closes with a powerful exhortation to remain steadfast in faith. Joanne quotes David’s words in Psalm 27:14: “Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart.” She reassures listeners that God’s timing is perfect and His plans are always for their good.

Joanne’s heartfelt prayer wraps up the episode, leaving listeners inspired to seek God’s presence daily. “Celebrate Him in the good and the bad,” she urges. “Sing a new song, offer Him your joy, and remember—He never stops working.”

Spiritual Lessons with Joanne is more than a podcast; it’s a source of hope, strength, and renewal for anyone walking the journey of faith. As Joanne says, “The joy of the Lord is your strength, and with Him, you can laugh your way out of anything.”

Transcript

Urban City Podcasts.

Hello, you’re listening to spiritual lessons with Joanne on the Urban City Podcast Network. Thank you guys so much for joining us today.

We are so excited that you have decided to come back and join us today. We’re going to be studying Psalm 27 and I’m so excited about Psalm 27. I remember when I first started reading this, it had to be about 2006-2007 when I started studying and reading Psalm 27 over and over and over and I got it in my spirit and it is a beautiful psalm of David.

It’s a cry out to God from David and I’m so excited to share it with you today. So I want to pray with us and I’m asking that you please go get your swords, get your bibles and come on and join me today, amen Psalm 27. Father God, we thank you so much for another opportunity to share your word with your people, to share your word with my brothers and my sisters.

God I pray that something will be said that will open our hearts more, that will change our minds, that will help us to seek your face, that will help us to have a hunger and a thirst for more and more of you, that will give us a desire to have a close and intimate relationship with you, that it will give us a desire to not want to wait until Sunday or Wednesday to hear what the preacher has to say, but to build our relationship with you ourselves. God we love you so much and we thank you again for another opportunity. We thank you for your love, your grace and your mercy and I pray Holy Spirit that you will come have your way in this podcast right now in the name of Jesus.

We pray, amen, amen. I’m so excited that you guys are here. I hope that you have grabbed your bibles and that you’re going to read along with me.

I’m reading the book of Psalm 27, Psalm 27 and again this is a Psalm of David and it says it’s an exuberant declaration of faith, right? A declaration of faith, faith is a substance of things hoped for and evidence of things not seen, you have faith and stuff that you don’t even see but you believe that God is going to do what you’re asking him to do, right? So this is a exuberant declaration of faith from David and again I’m reading from the New King James Version and then we’ll come back after we read, we’ll come back and kind of go through and try to break down a bit of what it’s saying, okay? The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes they stumbled and fell, though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear, though war may rise against me and this I will be confident. One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple, for in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion, in the secret place of his tabernacle he shall hide me. He shall set me high upon a rock, and now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in his tabernacle.

I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord. Hero Lord, when I cry with my voice, have mercy also upon me and answer me. When you said, seek my face, my heart said to you, your face Lord, I will seek.

Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger. You have been my help, do not leave me nor forsake me, O God of my salvation. When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me, teach me your way, O Lord, and lead me in a smooth path because of my enemies, do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and such as breathe out violence.

I would have lost heart unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart. Wait, I say on the Lord.

That is just such a powerful, powerful psalm to me, and I’m telling you back in 2006 and 2007, I was reading this every day, every day until I almost got it memorized by heart. I know all of most of the verses except towards the end, but I’m telling you this psalm is what got me through some tough, tough times, and I’m telling you my life sometimes, I tell my children my life, our lives feels like a soap opera for the things that we’ve gone through, for the things that we’ve had to believe God for just about six years ago. We were homeless.

A lot of people don’t know that story about us, but we were homeless. And my daughter in her little young age, and she would always say we were homeless. And I’m like, girl, we’re not homeless.

Don’t you tell nobody that? And she said she was like, why this woman won’t most say that we homeless? Why she won’t? Why won’t she believe that we’re homeless? When we were living in a hotel, we didn’t have a home, so many things that happened. My mom had passed. I’d lost the relationship, and it was just really, really heavy.

It was a tough time, but God saw us through. We were for six months, we were homeless for six months in a hotel, living from day to day, just figuring it out. But God covered us.

He protected us, and he kept us. And today, I believe that my children walked all or they stand stronger because of that experience, you know, not a pleasant experience, but we learned so much about each other. We learned how to take care of each other, to watch out for each other from that experience.

The Lord is my light and my salvation. As we walk through this journey called life, there are so many times that we may walk through dark days. We may go through things that just feel like they are too heavy.

It’s too much. Lord, if one more thing happened, I’m just saying, I’ll make it. I don’t know what’s going to happen.

Lord, if one more thing happened, you probably want to take me on out of here, but the Lord is my light in dark places. He is our light. He is our peace.

He is that still small voice that we need to be still and listen for. He is our light and he is our salvation. Our salvation is not found in going to church, even though it’s good for us to come together.

As a congregation, it’s good for us to come together. As a group of believers, it’s good for us to come together and encourage each other and learn together and, you know, share our testimonies with each other. But the Lord is our light and he is our salvation.

We find our salvation in him by believing on his Son that he sent to die on the cross for us. Amen? He’s our light and he is our salvation. In the message Bible, it says, light space zest.

That’s God. So with him on my side, I’m fearless, afraid of nothing and no one. With God on our side, we should fear no man.

There’s a scripture in this Bible. I might try to find it while we’re on here, but it says, do not be afraid of men and their faces. A lot of times when we’re standing before people and we’re talking to people and we’re looking at the faces and we let those faces scare us and we let those faces make us feel inferior.

But it said, do not be afraid of men or their faces, right? We should fear no one or no thing. When Vandal hordes ride down ready to eat me alive, those bullies and tough fall and tufts fall flat on their face. Now I’m just kind of reading it from the message Bible, but it says, when my enemies came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell.

They fall flat on their faces. Why? Because the Lord is my light and He’s my salvation. He is my strength.

He is the strength of my life. And we should fear no one or no thing. Fear not for God is with us wherever we go, even when the wicked come against us, even when they try to tear us down, even when they try to make us look bad.

The Lord is our light and He is our salvation and we shall not fear. He is the strength of our lives. Amen.

Though the army shouldn’t camp against us, our hearts shall not fear. Though people throw rocks and hide their hands, though people do things that are just not right. You got people who will do whatever they got to do to get what they want and hurt whoever is in the way.

A lot of times is not even about you when somebody does something crazy or stupid or something that hurts you. You end up losing their life or end up getting hurt because somebody was trying to hurt one person and end up hurting a whole bunch of other people that were just caught in the crossfire. Though enemies shall encamp against us, we shall not fear.

Though war may rise against us. In this one thing, we should be confident. This one thing, we should be confident.

One thing I have desired of the Lord and that I will seek that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. Dwelling in the house of the Lord and I’ve been talking about abiding. Since I read John chapter 15, I’m telling you that thing changed my life.

When I realize all I got to do is stay connected. Now, it’s not a simple thing to stay connected because it takes work. Stay connected to God.

You got to read His word. You got to make time to spend time with Him. You got to get up early or stay up late, whatever it takes to get still, get quiet and get in His presence and allow Him to restore you, allow Him to give you those deep breaths that you need to take to release the cares and the worries of the day.

Dwelling in the house of the Lord, dwelling in His presence. The house of the Lord is not just a church. We are the church, the people.

We are the church. We are the bride, right? But dwelling in the house of the Lord is dwelling in His presence, right? Dwelling in the presence of God. And that takes work.

That takes us making time. That takes us intentional, being intentional about spending time with God. Amen.

That we may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of our lives to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple. I’m asking God for one thing, only one thing, to live with Him in His house my whole life long. I’ll contemplate His beauty.

I’ll study at His feet. That’s from the message Bible. Study at His feet.

There’s a song Tasha Cobb sings, she says, and I’ll be seated at your feet to worship at your feet. I’ll be right here at your feet forever. I love that song, seated at the feet of Jesus, studying His word, waiting on Him, allowing Him to cleanse us, wash us, changes from the inside out.

Verse 5 in the message Bible says, that’s the only quiet, secure place in a noisy world. The perfect getaway far from the buzz of traffic in the presence of God is the only quiet, secure place in this noisy world. And it’s loud everywhere.

I tell my children, if I had a superpower, it would be my hearing because I hear everything and everything is like is like super loud. And when they come home and I’m watching TV and it’s on five, they’re like, well, how can you hear that? I hear everything and everything is loud. But in His presence, at His feet is the only quiet, secure place in a noisy world.

That is the perfect getaway far from the buzz of traffic. Find your place. I was met with one of my friends today and she told me the bathroom is her secret place.

That’s where she goes and that’s where she can be settled and be calm and spend time with God and hear from God and just be quiet and still. And even if you got 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, take time to sit quiet and sit still and be in the presence of God seated at His feet. Verse 6, God holds me head and shoulders above all who try to pull me down.

You’re always going to have people who are trying to bring you down or pull you down or make you feel like you’re not as good as they are or make you feel like you’re not good as you think you are, whatever it is. But God holds you head and shoulders above anybody that’s trying to bring any negative energy to you. All we have to do is really and truly remember to look to God.

We have to remember to remember God. I have to remind myself a lot that Joey and remember, remember God to remember his word. Remember what he said to you specifically.

Remember what he’s brought you through. Remember what he’s done for you. Remember that he loves you and he’s always there, always there.

And all you have to do is call and he comes right away. Even when you can’t feel him, he’s working in the background. Even when you can’t see him, he’s working in the background.

He never stops working ever. Amen. Verse 6, again, God holds me head and shoulders above all who try to pull me down.

I’m headed for his place to offer anthems that will raise the roof. Already I’m singing God’s songs. I’m making music to him.

Already we’re singing his praises for the things that he has done for us. Even if you say, you say, God had done that for me. Are you alive? Are you awake? When you open your mouth to speak, can you speak? Can you hear? Can you walk? Can you talk? God has done enough.

Because we are here. Some people did not wake up this morning. Some people who did wake up couldn’t get out of the bed.

Some people who got out of the bed could not see, could not speak, could not hear. God has blessed you real good. And for that, you owe him a thank you.

Psalms 100 says, enter into his presence with the password. Thank you. Thanking him.

Raising our voice with praise. Singing God’s songs. Even when I can’t see it you’re working.

Even when I don’t feel it you’re working. You’ll never stop. You’ll never stop working.

Singing praises to him for the things that he has done. And even if he doesn’t do anything else, thanking him for who he is, for his protection, for his peace. Amen.

Verse 7, through 9 it says, listen, God I’m calling at the top of my lungs. Be good to me. Answer me when my heart whispered, seek God.

My whole being replied. I’m seeking him. Don’t hide from me now.

Right? You’ve always been right there for me. Don’t turn your back on me now. This is David talking to God.

Don’t throw me out. Don’t abandon me. You’ve always kept the door open.

Always. He’s always kept us. He’s always been right there.

He said in his word, he’d never leave us and he’d never forsake us. Right? And this part here says, my father and my mother walked out on me, walked out and left me. But God took me in.

In the New King James Version again, it says, when my father and my mother forsake me. Let me find it here. Let me get back to it.

It says, when my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me. Sometimes we have mothers. Sometimes we have fathers and, you know, maybe they just weren’t meant to be mothers and fathers.

Who knows? But God is everything that we need. Sometimes I feel like there are so many people who have daddy issues. I had daddy issues, you know, there’s so many of us who have daddy issues, but God wants us to look to him as our heavenly father, our heavenly father, and to know that he is everything that we need.

A lot of times I’m walking around. Sometimes I miss my mom. I miss my dad.

You know, sometimes I just need a hug and I don’t know where somebody will come and I’m getting hugs all day. Getting hugs all day. I remember this one time I was one morning I got up and I wanted some toast and, you know, I was like, I’m just gonna make some toast.

But I love jelly with my toast. And I looked at the refrigerator. I didn’t have any jelly.

I’m like, ah, and I may have told this story before. I don’t know, but it just affected me so much because it just showed me that even the smallest thing God, God, it matters to God because it matters to us. So I didn’t get my toast.

I left and I had a meeting with one of my older, older ladies, one of my mature ladies. I love her to death. Miss Lucille Green, Dr. Lucille Green.

So I went to her house. We talked for a bit. And then she’s, I got ready to go and she said, well, baby, I don’t let nobody leave my house without giving them something.

And she opened the door to her pantry and immediately my eyes saw dark canned jelly. And I just started crying. And she was like, baby, what’s wrong? I was like, God loves me.

He loves me. Even the smallest things that are important to me, they’re important to him. And he provides even the smallest things, whatever that is important to you is important to God.

And he wants to show you just how important you are to him, right? When my father and my mother walked out and left me, God took me in. Point me down your highway, God. Direct me along a well-lighted street.

Show my enemies who side your own. Don’t throw me to the dogs. Those liars who are out to get me feeling the air with their treats.

I’m sure now I’ll see God’s goodness in the exuberant earth. Stay with God. Take heart.

Don’t quit. I’ll say it again. Stay with God.

And again, in the New King James version, it said, wait on the Lord. Be of good courage and he shall strengthen your heart. Wait on the Lord.

Be of good courage and he will strengthen your heart. Wait, I say on the Lord. God loves us so much.

He cares for us so much. And everything that’s important to us is important to him because we’re important to him. He wants to be a part of our everyday lives, not just when something bad happens, but when good things happen, invite a man.

Celebrate with him. Celebrate him. Praise him.

Give him the glory. Give him the honor. Give him the praise.

Sing a new song to him. Last night I was watching a movie, the Jesus, what is it called? The Jesus Revolution. And some music was playing and God gave me a song.

And I’m not ready to share it, but it was called Freedom. Freedom song. I think I don’t know.

But sing a new song to God. Make up your own song. He loves it.

And he didn’t say you have to have the best voice in the world. He said, make a joyful noise unto the Lord. A joyful noise.

Noise. If your heart is full of joy. There’s an old song.

They said, this joy that I have, the world didn’t give it to me and the world can’t take it away. But when God gives you joy, nobody can take that joy away. There’s a difference in happiness and joy because you can be happy one minute and somebody come in that you don’t like and they change your whole attitude.

But when you got joy, when you have the joy, joy, joy, joy down in your heart, the joy of the Lord is your strength. And you can laugh your way out of anything. So last thing I was saying, I was talking with a guy and he told me about this person who was, they had told him that he was dying.

There was nothing else he could do. He was in the hospital. The doctor said there was nothing else they could do for him.

So he told them to give him, bring some funny movies in there for him to watch. And he laughed and laughed and laughed himself back to health. Laughter is good for the soul.

Joy. The joy of the Lord is our strength. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid? Amen. Amen.

Father God, we thank you so much for today. We thank you so much for this time that you’ve given us to share your word. God, we just thank you for your joy.

We thank you for your love. We thank you for your presence. You’re an amazing God.

And God, we just thank you for being who you are. You are an amazing God. You love us.

You protect us. You cover us. You lead us.

You guide us. And God for that, we say thank you. Thank you God.

Thank you God. For your grace, your mercy, for your love. We’ll be so careful, Lord, to give you all the glory, to give you all the honor, and give you all the praise in Jesus name.

Amen. Amen. Thank you so much, my people.

You have been listening to spiritual lessons with Joanne on the Urban City Podcast Network. Urban City Podcast.

Discovering a New Praise: God’s Power and Process

In a soul-stirring episode of Urban City Podcast, Pastor Robert Mosley of New Strangers Home M.B. Church takes listeners on a profound spiritual journey through the biblical story of Joshua and the walls of Jericho. His message is clear: God’s got it, whatever it may be. Through powerful storytelling, scripture, and personal reflection, Pastor Mosley emphasizes the importance of faith, praise, and the transformative power of God’s plan—even when it seems strange or difficult to understand.

Whatever You’re Going Through—God’s Got It

Pastor Mosley opens by reminding us of a simple but essential truth: “Whatever you’re going through, God’s got it.” In a world filled with challenges and uncertainties, this reminder comes as a beacon of hope. The message resonates deeply, offering reassurance that no matter what we face—whether it’s hardship, confusion, or uncertainty—God is in control.

A Strange Instruction, A Strong Faith

Taking his audience into the heart of Joshua 6, Pastor Mosley recounts the peculiar instructions God gave to Joshua and the Israelites before the walls of Jericho fell. They were told to march around the city in silence for six days, a command that surely seemed baffling. Pastor Mosley points out that sometimes, God’s instructions may not make sense to us in the moment. But as believers, we must trust the process.

He emphasizes, “God’s ways are not our ways; His thoughts are not our thoughts.” Faith requires obedience, even when the path seems crooked, filled with curves, bumps, and unexpected detours. Just as the Israelites trusted God and marched silently, we too must learn to follow God’s plan, even when we don’t fully understand it.

From Promise to Praise: The Journey Through Pain

Pastor Mosley acknowledges the reality of pain in the journey toward God’s promise. “Once there is a promise, there is some pain you have to go through,” he says. This pain is not without purpose. Just as the Israelites faced many trials on their journey to the Promised Land, we too encounter pain on our path to God’s promises.

Yet, it’s through that pain that we find our praise. Pastor Mosley urges us to “praise God not just for the promise, but for the pain that brought you to the promise.” Our praise has value. It carries weight. And it’s in the act of praising—especially in difficult times—that we draw closer to God.

The Power of a New Praise

One of the key lessons from this episode is the concept of a new praise. As Pastor Mosley explains, praise isn’t just a reaction to the good things in life; it’s an act of faith, an offering to God even in the midst of trials. He explains that praise changes the atmosphere—it transforms our environment and invites God into our space. When we lift our hands, speak words of thanksgiving, and focus on His goodness, we create an environment for God to move in our lives.

Pastor Mosley reminds listeners that everyone’s praise is unique. “You don’t have to praise God the way I praise God, or the way Mama and Daddy used to praise God.” Your praise is personal, and it carries its own value and weight. No matter where you are or what you’re going through, God hears and values your praise.

Trusting the Process: The Walls Will Fall

In a powerful climax to the episode, Pastor Mosley draws attention to the final day of the Israelites’ march around Jericho. After six days of silent obedience, they were finally instructed to shout, and with that shout, the walls of Jericho came tumbling down. The lesson? There is power in trusting God’s process.

Sometimes, the enemy won’t understand why we’re going through certain things, but God always has a plan. “Trust the process,” Pastor Mosley urges, because when we do, God will give us the city—He will deliver on His promises. Whether we’re waiting for a breakthrough in our personal lives, relationships, or careers, the key is to stay faithful and obedient to God’s plan, even when the instructions don’t make sense.

Shout for the Lord Has Given You the City

As the podcast draws to a close, Pastor Mosley encourages listeners to give God praise for the victories that are coming. “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city,” he declares, echoing the words of Joshua. In our own lives, this means claiming the blessings and breakthroughs that God has already set in motion.

Whether it’s the desires of our heart or the needs that we have, Pastor Mosley assures us that God will fulfill them—and sometimes, He’ll even give us our wants. The key is to stay on God’s path and trust His timing.

Conclusion: A New Praise for 2023

Pastor Mosley’s message resonates deeply in this episode, reminding listeners that no matter what they face, God is in control. He encourages everyone to embrace a new praise in 2023, to trust God’s process, and to understand that even the pain we experience has a purpose.

As the episode wraps up, Pastor Mosley offers a heartfelt prayer, inviting listeners to seek salvation and to open their hearts to God’s plan. Whether you’re just beginning your journey of faith or have been walking with God for years, this episode is a powerful reminder that God’s got it, and there’s always a reason to praise.

—

Tune in to Urban City Podcast for more inspiring messages from Pastor Mosley and other spiritual leaders!

Transcript

Pastor Robert Mosley
Whatever it is, that God’s got it. I want to say that again, whatever it is, whatever you go through, God’s got it. And not only does he have it, God has it all in control.

And when God has it all in control, I want to let you know that there are three things that I’d like you to focus on. And these three things to focus on are this: praise.

I know, you know, the praise that you praise God in the sanctuary. You praise God in your home. You praise God in the firmament. You praise God on your way to work. You praise God when you get paid. But I want to talk about a new praise.

And what is this praise and why do it? And then not only why do it, when to do it. And if you give me a few minutes just to talk about it, I’d like to just let you know. First of all, I’m coming out of the book of Joshua, the sixth chapter and the fifth verse.

And when it says here, it says it shall come to pass that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout. And then the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, every man straight before him.

Then Joshua, the son of Nun, called the priests and said to them, take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of ram’s horns before the ark of the Lord. And he said to the people, proceed and march around the city, and let him who is on advance before the ark of the Lord. So it was when Joshua had spoken to the people that the seven priests, bearing the seven trumpets of ram’s horns before the Lord, advanced and blew the trumpets.

And the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed them. The armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard came after the ark, while the priests continued blowing the trumpets.

Now Joshua had commanded the people saying, you shall not shout or make any noise with your voice, nor shall a word proceed out of your mouth until the day I say to you, shout. Then you shall shout. So he had the ark of the Lord circle the city going around it once.

Then they came around to the camp and lodged in the camp. And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the Lord.

Then seven priests bearing seven trumpets of ram’s horns before the ark of the Lord went on continually and blew the trumpets. And the armed men went before them, but the rear guard came after the ark of the Lord while the priests continued blowing the trumpets.

And the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. So they did this for six days. I want to let you know that there are some things that you may think strange in your life.

There are some things that you may not understand, but God has given you some instructions. And the instruction that God gives you may not make sense to you right then and there. But it’s up to us to follow what God says, because he says, my ways are not your ways.

My thoughts are not your thoughts. His ways are so much higher than ours. His thoughts are so much higher than our thoughts.

But if we acknowledge him in all of our ways, he will direct our paths. If we continue to seek him first, he’ll add everything else to you. So sometimes, I want to let you know, it might seem strange. Sometimes it may seem a little strange. It might not give you the instruction to go straight ahead.

It might be some curves. It might be some bumps. It might be some crooked roads.

It might be some hills and some valleys and some mountains that you have to go through to get to your promise. But the Israelites were in the same way. They had been promised by God that they were going into the promised land.

And now they get to the point where they are marching around this city, this fortified city of Jericho. And when Joshua had sent in some spies, they said that actually a while back, when you think about it, Moses sent in some spies.

And when they came back, Joshua was one of the ones who came across. Joshua was one of the ones with Caleb. And while everybody else was saying, oh, we look like grasshoppers.

And all these people decided to give a bad report. Joshua and Caleb had a different spirit. And see, sometimes you have to have a different spirit from some folks that are around you.

Sometimes you have to be different. You have to think different from those around you because a lot of times people don’t understand. If you do the same thing that you’ve always done, you’re still going to get the same results that you’ve always gotten. So you have to be able to step out on faith and do these things. And then realize that once there is a promise, there is some pain that you have to go through.

And then after the pain that you go through, you’ll be able to praise God because of the promise. And not only because of the promise, but because of the pain that you went through to get to the promise. And then, therefore, you have a praise.

But I want to talk to you today about let’s focus on the praise. So I want to let you know what praise is. Well, I’m glad you asked.

Praise is to glorify God, especially by attribution of perfections. Praise in words like ‘to heal’ means a song, praise, or a confession. Thanksgiving, Shabbat means to praise and glorify. All these things mean to praise, to stretch out the hand. There are different ways you can praise God.

You don’t have to praise God the way I praise God. You don’t have to praise God the way Mama and Daddy used to praise God. You don’t have to praise God the way Grandmama used to praise God.

But when God gives you a promise, and he takes you through that promise, and you’ve been through some pain, and once you can see that, like I said, the instructions might seem strange, but trust the process. As people say, trust the process.

And if you trust the process, God will show up. God will be on time, and God will bring you through. God will bring you out.

And when God brings you out, there will be a new praise for you. And so as we look at this new praise, it comes from the Latin word meaning price or value. So I want to let you know this, that there is some value associated with your praise.

Don’t think that just because you might not have a lot of times you may think about offering as monetary. No, you can offer up your praise to God. You can offer up your praise right now in the sanctuary.

So it does not matter where you are, whether you’re driving along right now, on your way to work, in the sanctuary, or wherever you might be, you can praise God in your own way. Know that not only when you praise God, put some value into your praise, that it has some weight to it.

That praise, because when, as the old saying goes, when praises go up, the blessings come down. When you think about it, I want to let you know that praise has a value, and the value means that it has some worth to it. So I don’t care who you are, how old you are, how young you are, wherever you are in life.

Your praise has some value to it. I’m letting you know what praise is. The definition of praise is also that, as Christians, praise is the joyful thanking and adoring of God, the celebration of his goodness and grace. And this simply means that the act of praising God is rightfully due to God and God alone. Praise is a spiritual offering.

When you look at Hebrews, the 13th chapter and the 15th verse, where it says, through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that confess his name. There is a sacrifice of praise.

And I just feel in my spirit that there is somebody that has to sacrifice their praise. Somebody says, I had to sacrifice some things. And because I had to sacrifice some things, I’ve been through some good days, but I’ve also had some bad days.

And because of the bad days that I’ve had, I can trust God because of the good days that I’ve had as well. Because if he can take care of me in the good days, I know he’ll take care of me in my bad days. And because of that, I have a sacrifice of praise.

Now, praise is also thanking God for his many gracious gifts. The 103rd number of Psalms, second verse, says, yes, I will bless the Lord and not forget the glorious things he does for me. Yes, we will bless the Lord at all times. My soul shall magnify the Lord.

Oh, magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt his name together because God is so good. And when you think about how good God is and how good God has been to you, I can’t— I don’t know about you, but I can’t help but give God some praise because God is, yes, just that good.

And not only is he just that good, he’s so much more good and better. As we figured out what praise is, now the question is, why praise God? Why praise God? Because God is worthy to be praised.

Nobody should have to pump you. Nobody should have to prime you. Nobody should have to tell you to lift your hands.

Nobody should have to tell you to stand up. Nobody should have to tell you to stomp your feet. Nobody should have to tell you to clap your hands.

Nobody should have to tell you to make a joyful noise because God is so good. And yes, he’s just that good and more because we serve a mighty God, a God who woke you up this morning. If you need five things just to give God some praise, let me just go ahead and tell you that right now.

Number one is because he woke you up this morning. Number two is because he woke you up this morning. Number three, he woke you up this morning. If you need one more, number four, he woke you up this morning.

And number five, he woke you up this morning. God is just so good and more. When you’re on this side in the land of the living, it’s up to us to give God some praise.

First, he deserves our praise. He is worthy to receive our praise. In 2 Samuel, the 22nd chapter and the 4th verse, it says, I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies. Yes, God will save you from your enemies. God will save you from the wrong things, the evil things that happen in life.

But that’s just one of the reasons to praise God. The second is in Revelation, the 4th chapter and the 11th verse, where it says, you are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power. You created all things, and by your will, they were created and have their being. He, God, is our creator. And not only is he our creator, God is so much greater.

So whatever you go through in life, know that God’s got it. God’s got your back.

So it doesn’t matter what it is. You will have a new praise in 2023. I don’t care if we’re already into the fifth month of 2023.

Yes, you’ll still have a new praise in 2023 because God is just that good. When you think about it, and not only is he just that good, when you think about his goodness, his mercy, and his grace, God gives us some things that we can be thankful for. And here’s the biggest reason: because he thought I was worth saving. And so he came and changed my life.

And he thought I was worth keeping. So he cleaned me up inside. He thought I was worth dying for.

So he sacrificed his life so that I could be free, so that I could be whole, so that I can tell everyone I know that he thought I was worth saving. And because he thought I was worth saving, my God is worthy to be praised. Another reason that God is worthy to be praised is because when you hear you’re reminded of the greatness of our God, the 96th number of Psalms, 4th verse says, for great is the Lord and most worthy of praise.

He is to be feared above all gods. And then also when you go down to the 145th number of Psalms, 3rd verse, it says, great is the Lord and most worthy of praise. His greatness no one can fathom.

That means that our good God is so much better than our good. We might say God is good. And in the second part of that, it says all the time, but all the time, God is good.

Well, all the time, God is so much better than what we even think good can be, because he’s just that good. He’s just that God. And when you say, well, what does praise do? I’m glad you asked again. What does praise do? Well, because third, praise discharges strength in faith. Yes.

Praise discharges your strength in faith, and that causes God to move on your behalf. In other words, praise from the lips of children and infants, you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. The 8th number of Psalms, 2nd verse, says praising God can transform your environment.

Because I remember a song by Kurt Carr where he said, you can change the atmosphere, and you can change the atmosphere by your praise. You don’t believe me? Your boss says something crazy to you.

Your wife says something strange. Your husband starts acting up. Your kids start acting funny.

It does not matter what it is. Go out by yourself and go into your secret place, and you start praising God. You start giving God some praise.

I’m not going to be here with you all day. I’m almost through. But when you start thinking about how good God is, you can go by yourself.

Nobody has to go with you, and you can praise God because God is so good. You can praise God because of what he does.

When you remember this as we go on, that God inhabits the praise of his people. God inhabits the praise. That means that I create an environment for God to come into.

That means there are some environments that God probably wasn’t going to be in just because of all the evilness and everything else that goes on. But when you start to praise God, you start to create an atmosphere for God to move in and move in your life. It does not matter what the doctor said.

It doesn’t matter what the lawyer said. It doesn’t matter if you get a bad report. It doesn’t matter if you get fired from your job.

It doesn’t matter if the car got repoed, if the house burned down. It does not matter what the situation is. We have to understand God has our back through everything, every situation, every problem, every trial, every temptation.

Everything that we go through, God covers us and has our back. And because he has our back, he deserves our praise. If you give me a few more minutes, I’m almost done.

And God, not only does he have our praise, we can praise God for forgiveness and prayer. I’m going to say that again. We can praise God for forgiveness and answered prayer.

The 65th number of Psalms, 1st and 3rd verses, says, praise awaits you, O God, in Zion. You, our vows, will be fulfilled. O you who hear prayer, to you all men will come. When we were overwhelmed by sins, you atoned for our transgressions. And as Joshua was telling these people, I’m sure that the Israelites didn’t understand everything when he lined up the priests.

And he lined up the ones who had their guards, and they were armed and went before the ark. And they went, and they blew their trumpets. And when it says they blew their trumpets, and the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed them.

And the army went before the priests who blew the trumpets.

I’m sure they didn’t understand everything because everything God tells you won’t make sense to us, but it will make sense in time. Because as old folks say, while you’re trying to figure it out, God’s already worked it out. So everything won’t make sense in our time.

But they went around on day one. And as they go around on day one, I’m sure they were thinking, what is God doing? What is God going to do for us? What

is God going to do? This fortified city of Jericho, I’m marching around, and I’m marching around, and I’m marching around. And then after we march around and blow trumpets, but don’t say nothing on the first day.

See, every time, everything that you go through does not require a response. And sometimes that’s where, when you look back in the Bible at Jacob, and when you go to his son Joseph, that’s where Joseph messed up because Joseph gave word to his adversary. Joseph gave word to everything that he went through.

He told his brothers, and he had a multicolored coat, and he knew they didn’t like him. And that’s when he got thrown in the pit. But see, everything you go through, everybody that does something to you, everything that you go through does not require a response.

He said, don’t say nothing. When he says, you’ll keep quiet until the day I say shout, then you shall shout. But see, sometimes the enemy has to see you going through some things.

It won’t make sense to the enemy, but it makes perfect sense to our God. And he says, march around there seven times, but don’t say anything until the seventh day. And then, so they go around the city once, and they go back to the camp, and they lodge in the camp.

Then they went back the second day. Day number two, they go out, and they march around the city. The priests with their trumpets and the armed guards in front of the priests.

And when they go in front, marching with the Ark of the Covenant—Ark of the Covenant symbolizes God with them. So as they’re going out with God, see, you can go out with God. But sometimes God doesn’t reveal—God is not going to always reveal his plan to you. You have to trust God. And when you trust God, as they say now, trust the process.

So you have to trust God and trust the process that God will bring you out, and that God will bring you through. And that when you see that as they go—day number three, they did the same thing. They’re going around and around the city of Jericho.

And I’m sure the folks inside Jericho thought that these Israelites were crazy. And see, sometimes when the enemy looks at you, when the enemy doesn’t realize what you’re doing, when the enemy doesn’t know that you’re working on God’s plan, sometimes it might seem a little strange. Sometimes it might seem a little crazy.

Sometimes you might get called outside of your name. But I want to let you know, it does not matter. It does not matter what the enemy thinks.

It does not matter what they say. You keep on trusting God and holding on to God’s unchanging hand. And God will bring you through.

God will bring you out. And it says that on the day that only they marched around the city seven times, and when they marched around seven times, and the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, shout, for the Lord has given you the city.

See, sometimes when you trust God and trust the process, God will give you the city. God will give you the desires of your heart. God will give you— not only will he fulfill your needs, but God will also even give you some of your wants as well.

But you have to trust God and trust God in the process. And don’t—while you’re trusting God in the process, don’t deviate from the process. See, because we can praise God because he is powerful.

We can praise God because we can praise God through our music and our song. You can praise God by the lifting of hands. Oh, Mother once said that if I can’t say a word, I’ll just wave my hand. And we can praise God when our heart is breaking.

You can praise God. And that should be something that happens daily. When you wake up in the morning, you can say, thank you, Lord.

You can say, thank you, Lord, for one more day, because God has been so good to me. God has been so good to you. And because he’ll turn our mourning into joy.

And you can praise God for his loving kindness. And one thing that I want to let you know, too, you can praise God for his son. Over 2,000 years ago, he went to that old rugged cross, not only for you but also for me.

That not only did he go to that old rugged cross, but he was beaten, and he bled, and he died, and he suffered. And he was bruised for our transgressions. He was bruised and chastised for our sins and iniquities.

And one thing that, because he was bruised for my transgressions— bruised for my sins, your sins, our sins, and the sins of this world— we ought to have a praise in us that nobody should have to tell you when you come into the sanctuary to lift your hands. Nobody should tell you when you come to the sanctuary to praise God.

Nobody should tell you in the sanctuary to lift your hands and thank God because he’s been so good to you. Let us give God some praise. You should have a praise on the inside of you because I’m almost done.

But when you think about it like this—those who used to go to the club, and I know I might be stepping on some toes here—but those who used to go to the club, where you got ready for the club, you didn’t just get ready on the day you went to the club. You got ready. You picked your outfit out a week in advance.

If you knew you were going to the club that weekend, you picked your outfit on Wednesday or Thursday, and you probably had a second outfit ready by Friday. But you knew that if things didn’t work the way you wanted them to, you had a backup plan. And as we go through, we should be the same way with God. God is so good.

God is so loving. God is so kind. He’s so merciful that he gives us chances over and over and over again.

Donnie McClurkin has a song that says, a righteous man falls seven times, but he gets back up again. And I just thank God because he is so good. I thank God that he is not only giving you another chance, but he’s giving me another chance for all of us to get it all straightened out, to get us all worked out in order to make this right.

So I want to let you know that as I leave here today, that God has everything in control, and he’ll give you a new praise for 2023. It does not matter what you go through. It does not matter how you go through.

It does not matter when you go through or why. It does not matter if folks talk about you, laugh at you, or make fun of you. God has everything all in control.

And as I close, I want to pray for you. I pray that if this message has touched you, that all you have to say right now—all God wants to hear—and if you are not saved, I want to let you know that today is a good day to be saved.

If you know, by opening up your heart to God, confessing with your mouth and believing in your heart that Jesus Christ was raised from the dead, the Bible says, thou shalt be saved.

All you have to say is, Lord, come into my life. Save me. Help me to be a better man, a better woman.

Help me to be a better person, Lord, as I go through this Christian life on this Christian journey. Lord, I need a new praise because I’ve gone through some hell, and I’m going through some high water. I’ve gone through some things.

And God, I just know that this praise on the inside— when he gives you a praise, there’s joy that you have. The world can’t take it away because the world didn’t give it. And the world can’t take it away. So I want to let you know I’ve enjoyed this.

This is Pastor Mosley, New Strangers Home.
