What investigators and witnesses reveal so far about the violent incident that disrupted a busy Baton Rouge shopping center

Urban City Podcast Digital News Desk• 5 min read

A mass shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge on April 23 2026 has left multiple people injured and sparked an ongoing investigation by local state and federal authorities. While details are still emerging officials have confirmed several key facts about how the incident unfolded who may have been involved and what remains unknown.

According to Baton Rouge police the shooting began shortly after midday inside the mall’s food court area. Authorities say the violence was not random but instead stemmed from a confrontation between two groups that escalated into gunfire. Law enforcement officials reported receiving emergency calls around 120 pm local time prompting a rapid response from multiple agencies. Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots and seeing people run in panic as the situation quickly escalated.

Police have emphasized that the incident involved multiple shooters rather than a single suspect. Several individuals believed to be involved fled the scene before officers arrived.

At least 10 people were injured in the shooting according to officials. Some victims were transported to hospitals while others were treated at a temporary triage site established near the mall. Among the injured at least two individuals required surgery indicating serious or critical wounds. Reports also suggest that some of those injured may have been bystanders caught in the crossfire rather than participants in the initial conflict.

There are conflicting early reports regarding fatalities with some outlets indicating at least one death while others have not confirmed any fatalities as of the latest official statements. This discrepancy reflects how information can evolve quickly in the immediate aftermath of a major incident.

Local police along with federal agencies including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives are actively investigating the shooting. Authorities secured the mall evacuated shoppers and established a perimeter to allow emergency responders to operate. Officials have stated that there is no ongoing active threat to the public.

As of now no arrests have been confirmed and police continue searching for one or more suspects believed to have fled the scene. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and asking witnesses to provide videos or information that could help identify those responsible.

Individuals inside the mall described chaotic and frightening scenes. Some reported hearing what sounded like multiple weapons being fired followed by crowds running for exits. Others said they saw injured people on the ground as law enforcement arrived. One witness indicated that the situation escalated quickly from what appeared to be a verbal dispute into a violent exchange leaving little time for bystanders to react.

Police officials confirmed that the shooting originated from an argument between two groups and noted that innocent individuals may have been unintentionally harmed. Local and state leaders have condemned the violence and pledged that those responsible will be apprehended while urging residents to avoid the area during the investigation.

This shooting comes during a period marked by multiple violent incidents in Louisiana including another recent shooting in Shreveport that resulted in several fatalities. While the two events are not believed to be connected their timing has raised concerns about public safety.

Despite the information released so far several key questions remain unanswered. The identities and motives of those involved have not been publicly confirmed. The exact number of shooters is still under investigation. Authorities have not definitively stated how many victims were bystanders versus participants. It also remains unclear whether arrests are imminent.

The Mall of Louisiana shooting remains an active and evolving investigation. What is known is that the incident stemmed from a dispute that escalated into gunfire resulting in multiple injuries and widespread panic. Officials continue working to gather evidence identify suspects and provide clarity as more verified information becomes available.

What We Know So Far: 8 Children Dead After Domestic Dispute Turns Deadly in Shreveport

Urban City Podcast Digital Desk• 4 min read

Major Takeaways

Eight children between ages 1 and 14 were killed after a domestic dispute escalated into a multi-location shooting.

The suspect, reportedly related to the victims, was killed by police after a pursuit involving a carjacking.

Authorities confirm no additional suspects, but the investigation into the cause and timeline remains ongoing.

A quiet Sunday morning in Shreveport turned into one of the most devastating tragedies the city has ever seen, one that left eight children dead and an entire community searching for answers.

According to law enforcement officials, the violence began as what was initially described as a domestic dispute, a term often used to describe conflicts between individuals who know each other, typically within families or intimate relationships. But what unfolded went far beyond a typical domestic incident. Within a matter of hours, the situation escalated into a multi-location shooting that claimed the lives of eight children between the ages of 1 and 14.

Police say the shooting began early Sunday morning, shortly after 6 a.m., in the Cedar Grove neighborhood. Officers responding to the scene quickly realized they were dealing with something far larger than a single incident. The crime scene expanded across multiple locations, including several homes, making it one of the most complex investigations local authorities have handled in recent memory.

In total, ten people were shot, with only two surviving the attack. The eight fatalities were all children, a detail that has shaken both residents and officials to their core.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspected gunman was related to some of the victims, underscoring the domestic nature of the incident. While officials have not yet publicly released all identities, the connection between the suspect and victims highlights a grim reality: some of the most dangerous violence doesn’t come from strangers, it comes from within households.

After the shootings, the suspect fled the scene, escalating the situation even further. Police say the individual carjacked a vehicle and attempted to escape, leading officers on a pursuit that crossed into nearby areas, including Bossier City. The situation ultimately ended when law enforcement confronted the suspect, who was fatally shot by police during the chase.

Officials have stated that no additional suspects are being sought, indicating that this appears to be an isolated but catastrophic act of violence.

Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith described the scene as extensive and unlike anything many officers had experienced. Local leadership echoed that sentiment, with city officials calling it one of the worst tragedies in Shreveport’s history.

The emotional toll has been immediate and overwhelming. Community leaders, including the mayor, have urged residents to come together in support of the victims’ families, many of whom are now facing unimaginable loss. Churches across the city were asked to offer prayers, and grief counselors are expected to play a critical role in the days ahead.

The investigation is ongoing, with state police assisting local authorities. Detectives are working to piece together a timeline of events, determine what triggered the initial dispute, and understand how it escalated so quickly into mass violence.

While details are still emerging, this case highlights a broader and uncomfortable truth. Domestic violence incidents can escalate rapidly and unpredictably, sometimes with devastating consequences. In many communities across Louisiana and the broader United States, domestic-related calls remain among the most volatile situations law enforcement responds to.

For the Urban City audience, this story hits especially hard. Incidents like this are not just isolated headlines. They reflect deeper issues involving family conflict, access to firearms, mental health challenges, and systemic gaps in early intervention. While officials have not yet confirmed all contributing factors in this specific case, experts consistently point to these underlying elements in similar tragedies.

Right now, investigators are urging anyone with information, photos, or video footage to come forward. Even the smallest detail could help clarify what happened in those critical early moments.

As the city mourns, one thing is clear. This is not just a crime story, it is a community crisis. Eight young lives were lost before they even had a chance to begin, and the ripple effects will be felt far beyond Shreveport.

This remains a developing story, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.

How two fatal federal shootings in Minneapolis ignited national outrage, intensified immigration enforcement debates, and raised urgent questions about accountability, law enforcement power, and civil rights protections.

Minneapolis is once again at the center of national attention after federal immigration agents fatally shot a second person this month during an expanded immigration enforcement operation. The shooting has intensified public concern, deepened political tensions, and reignited debate over the growing presence of federal immigration officers in local communities.

The incident occurred in south Minneapolis during a federal enforcement action involving Border Patrol and immigration authorities. Officials stated that agents encountered a man who was reportedly armed and that the situation escalated rapidly. According to preliminary accounts, officers attempted to detain the individual when he allegedly resisted and raised a firearm, prompting an agent to discharge their weapon. The man later died from his injuries at a local hospital.

Authorities have not yet released full details about the individual’s identity or immigration status, citing an ongoing investigation. What is known is that this marks the second fatal shooting by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis in a matter of weeks, fueling outrage among residents, civil rights groups, and state leaders who say the pattern signals a dangerous escalation in federal enforcement tactics.

The latest shooting follows an earlier fatal encounter this month involving a Minneapolis woman who was shot during a separate immigration operation. That case sparked protests, emotional public outcry, and demands for accountability, with critics questioning whether lethal force was necessary. The second fatal incident has only intensified concerns that federal agents are operating with insufficient oversight, transparency, and coordination with local authorities.

Minnesota state officials responded swiftly to the most recent shooting, condemning the violence and calling for federal agencies to scale back or suspend their operations in the state. Leaders argued that immigration enforcement should not result in deadly confrontations in residential neighborhoods and warned that continued aggressive tactics could further destabilize community trust.

The Minneapolis mayor echoed similar concerns, describing the repeated shootings as deeply troubling and urging residents to remain calm amid rising anger. City officials also worked to manage crowds and demonstrations that formed shortly after the incident, as activists and community members gathered to protest what they described as an alarming pattern of excessive force by federal authorities.

Protests erupted across multiple parts of Minneapolis following the shooting, with demonstrators demanding an end to federal immigration raids and chanting for greater accountability. Community organizations organized rallies calling for the removal of immigration agents from local neighborhoods, arguing that heavily armed operations create fear and increase the risk of unnecessary violence.

For many residents, the shooting has become part of a broader conversation about law enforcement power, federal authority, and the emotional toll of aggressive immigration policy. Minneapolis, a city still shaped by past police accountability battles, now finds itself grappling with another wave of public scrutiny over the use of force and the role of law enforcement in vulnerable communities.

Civil rights advocates argue that the repeated fatal incidents suggest deeper systemic issues, including inadequate training, unclear rules of engagement, and insufficient external oversight. They have called for an independent investigation into both shootings, stressing that federal agencies should not be solely responsible for reviewing their own conduct in cases involving lethal force.

Supporters of strong immigration enforcement counter that federal officers operate in unpredictable and high risk environments, often confronting individuals who may be armed or attempting to evade arrest. They argue that agents must make split second decisions to protect themselves and others and maintain that the officers involved acted within legal and procedural boundaries.

Still, critics warn that expanding immigration enforcement into street level operations increases the likelihood of violent encounters and places both undocumented immigrants and U.S. citizens at risk. They contend that aggressive tactics may deter people from reporting crimes, seeking medical help, or cooperating with law enforcement due to fear of deportation or retaliation.

The shooting also highlights growing friction between state and federal governments over immigration policy. Minnesota leaders have expressed frustration over what they describe as a lack of communication and coordination from federal agencies operating within the state. Some lawmakers are now pushing for stronger legal protections for residents and more restrictive policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

Meanwhile, federal officials continue to defend their mission, stating that they are enforcing existing immigration laws and targeting individuals they believe pose safety or legal concerns. They argue that their operations are lawful and necessary to uphold national immigration standards, even as local officials call for reform or restraint.

As investigations into the shooting continue, questions remain about the precise sequence of events, the decisions made by officers at the scene, and whether alternative de escalation tactics could have been employed. Legal experts emphasize that clarity and transparency will be essential to maintaining public trust and preventing misinformation from fueling further unrest.

Beyond the immediate case, the broader impact of these incidents is already being felt across Minneapolis. Families in immigrant communities report heightened fear and anxiety, while advocacy groups warn that ongoing enforcement actions may traumatize children, disrupt households, and strain social services.

At the same time, some residents express concern about public safety and argue that law enforcement should not be restricted from carrying out legitimate duties. The divide reflects a national conversation over how immigration laws should be enforced, what limits should be placed on federal power, and how to balance security with human rights.

For Minneapolis, the second fatal shooting represents more than an isolated event. It is a flashpoint in an ongoing struggle over trust in law enforcement, the consequences of political decisions, and the human cost of policy driven enforcement.

As the city waits for investigative findings and potential legal outcomes, the community remains on edge. What happens next could shape not only local immigration policy but also national attitudes toward federal enforcement practices in American cities.

How the killing of Renee Good forced America to confront federal force, immigrant fear, and what happens when government power collides with everyday people on city streets.

Good evening. This is Big Back Politics Live and I am Denise Milsap on urbancitypodcast.com and trhe Urban City Podcast App! . And tonight I am not here to soothe you! I am here to wake you the hell up.

Because if a woman can be shot in the face by a federal agent on a city street and the government can shrug and say “justified,” then this country is in some deep, dangerous shit.

Her name was Renee Good.
Thirty-seven years old.
A U.S. citizen.
Shot dead by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.

And the federal government wants you to believe she was a terrorist.

Let that poison sit in your mouth for a second.
A woman sitting in her car was labeled a terrorist after she was killed so the people who killed her could sleep better at night.

That is not law enforcement.
That is propaganda.

Now let me say something real slow for the folks who still believe every damn government press release.
When a government starts calling unarmed civilians terrorists, it is not trying to tell the truth.
It is trying to control the narrative.

This happened in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Not a border crossing.
Not a cartel hideout.
Not some battlefield.
An American city. With families, with kids, with people walking dogs and going to work.

Federal immigration agents rolled into that city in massive numbers, no coordination, no respect for local leadership, no concern for the people who actually live there. They came in like they owned the place.

And that arrogance got somebody killed.

Renee Good was in her vehicle. Agents surrounded her. One of them opened her door. Multiple armed people were standing around her. Anybody with a heartbeat would be scared in that moment. And when her car moved, instead of backing off, instead of stepping away, instead of trying to de-escalate, an ICE agent pulled his gun and fired.

They didn’t shoot the tire.
They didn’t shoot the engine.
They didn’t shoot a window.

They shot her in the face.

You don’t do that by accident.
You do that when you have decided that the person in front of you is disposable.

And then the government had the nerve to smear her after she was dead. To call her dangerous. To call her a threat. To call her a terrorist.

Well you know what I say? Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice EVERYWHERE!
How could this happen in a place thats supposed to be the greatest country on this planet? HOW??

Is that is how this system works?
First they kill you.
Then they assassinate your character.
Then they dare your family and your community to prove you deserved to live.

But here is the problem for them.

We saw the video.

We saw how the car was moving.
We saw where the agent was standing.
We saw that this was not some Hollywood action scene where a car was barreling down on a line of officers.

This was a woman boxed in by armed federal agents trying to get out of a terrifying situation.

And for that, she died.

Now ICE says the agent feared for his life.
They always say that SHIT!
Hell they said it when cops killed George Floyd!
They said it when cops killed Breonna Taylor!
They say it EVERY SINGLE time a badge turns a human being into a body on the pavement!

Fear is the universal excuse for killing people in this country.

But fear does not erase responsibility.
Fear does not justify execution.
Fear does not give you the right to end a life because someone made a move you didn’t like.

Minneapolis leaders didn’t buy the story.
The mayor didn’t buy the story.
The governor didn’t buy the story.
The people who live there damn sure didn’t buy the story.

They called bullshit.
And they were right.

Because this shooting was not an isolated incident. It was the predictable result of a federal government that has decided it can deploy armed agents into American cities like it’s conducting military operations.

Thousands of ICE agents poured into Minneapolis.
Neighborhoods were flooded with unmarked vehicles and armed personnel.
People were afraid to leave their homes.
Families were on edge.

And when you mix fear, guns, and unchecked power, somebody gets hurt.

This time it was Renee Good.

And let me make this plain for anybody listening.

She was not undocumented.
She was not being arrested.
She was not wanted.
She was not accused of anything.

She was there.

That was her crime.

Being present.
Being a witness.
Being a citizen in a place where the federal government decided to flex its muscle.

If that does not scare you, you are not paying attention.

Because if a U.S. citizen can be killed by a federal agent for being near an ICE operation, then the line between “target” and “bystander” has disappeared.

That means you.
That means me.
That means anybody who happens to be in the wrong place when power decides it is feeling jumpy.

This is not just about immigration.
This is about federal power.

This is about what happens when agencies that were created to handle paperwork and enforcement suddenly behave like armed occupiers in American neighborhoods.

ICE was never designed to be a community-policing organization.
They were designed to detain and deport.

So when you give them guns, authority, and zero accountability inside cities, you get tragedies.

And then you get lies.

Because the government knows that if people saw this for what it was, there would be hell to pay.

So they say terrorist.
They say threat.
They say danger.

And they hope you stop asking questions.

Well Big Back Politics Live is not stopping.

Because Renee Good cannot speak anymore.
So we will speak for her.

Because her family deserves the truth.
Her community deserves the truth.
And this country deserves to know what is being done in its name.

Minneapolis has already carried the weight of law enforcement violence. That city knows what it feels like when a life is taken and excuses come after. Now federal agents have written their own ugly chapter in that history.

And if they get away with it, they will do it again.

Because power without accountability always does.

So here is what I am telling you to do.

Do not let this fade.
Do not let them bury this.
Do not let them rewrite this.

Call your representatives.
Demand hearings.
Demand independent investigations.
Demand body camera footage.
Demand names.
Demand consequences.

Because if a federal agent can shoot a citizen in the face and walk away, then none of us are as free as we think we are.

This is Denise Milsap on urbancitypodcast.com and the Urban City Podcast App.
This is Big Back Politics Live! Stay locked in!

And we are NOT letting this go!!! Yall stay blessed…

It’s a shake up. A realignment. And what happens over the next few years could decide whether the city leans back into its old strengths or hurtles deeper into the kind of uncertainty that both excites and terrifies urban planners, business folks, and everyday New Yorkers alike.

Here’s the full breakdown: what happened, why it matters, and where things go from here, warts and all.

What Went Down

The Players

Zohran Mamdani, a 33 year old state assemblyman from Queens, ran on a bold progressive platform.
Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, attempted a comeback but lost the Democratic primary to Mamdani.
Eric Adams, the incumbent mayor, initially sought reelection but eventually pulled out, creating a somewhat chaotic field.

The Mechanics and the Upset

The Democratic mayoral primary for NYC in June 2025 used ranked choice voting, where voters ranked up to five candidates. Mamdani surprised many, overtaking Cuomo and clinching the Democratic nomination in a major upset.
Key issues driving voter behavior included housing affordability, cost of living, and young voter turnout.

Broader Context

New York City remains overwhelmingly Democratic, with about 65 percent of registered voters identifying with the party. The race carries national implications, signaling the ongoing clash between progressive and moderate forces in urban America.

Why This Election Matters for New York

A new mayor in New York isn’t just another headline, it’s a potential turning point. This race could mark a structural shift in how the city governs, what it prioritizes, and how residents experience daily life.

1. Housing and Cost of Living

Mamdani’s platform is centered on affordability. He’s proposed freezing rents for rent stabilized apartments, building hundreds of thousands of affordable units, launching public grocery stores, providing free or subsidized transit, and taxing the wealthy to fund these programs.
If the next mayor delivers on even part of this vision, it could reshape New York’s economic and social infrastructure, especially for working class families, immigrants, and those being priced out of their neighborhoods.

2. Politics of Change vs. Continuity

This election drew a line between two visions, maintaining the status quo versus demanding structural change. Mamdani’s grassroots, progressive campaign prevailed over Cuomo’s establishment backed effort, revealing a strong appetite for something new.
For the city’s institutions, police, transit, housing, education, that means potential stress tests on old models. Will real reform happen, or will it all get watered down by bureaucracy?

3. Young Voters and Demographics

Young voters showed up in higher numbers than expected, and their enthusiasm for a progressive agenda helped drive Mamdani’s victory.
This signals a major demographic shift in political influence. Traditional power blocs, labor unions, real estate, and older residents, will need to adjust. The new mayor’s policies will likely reflect the priorities of a younger, more socially conscious generation.

4. The Progressive Surge and Institutional Pushback

Mamdani’s win fits into a national trend of progressive challengers gaining traction in big cities. The old guard, including moderate Democrats and business interests, is already pushing back.
If this progressive movement translates into real executive power, it could shift New York’s policies on labor, housing, and policing. But change won’t come easily, city agencies and established power structures rarely move quickly.

5. Budget, Taxation, and Implementation Realities

Big ideas sound great on the campaign trail, but New York’s reality is complicated. The city runs on a massive budget, entangled bureaucracy, and complex relationships between city, state, and federal entities.
Raising taxes on the wealthy may fund social programs, but it could also trigger concerns about capital flight or business relocation. Turning progressive vision into functional governance will be a delicate balancing act.

What to Watch: Key Areas of Impact

A. Housing Market and Affordability

If people in the Bronx, Queens, or Brooklyn don’t see meaningful rent relief or new affordable housing options, the new administration’s credibility will erode fast.
Watch how the city handles new housing developments, zoning reforms, and regulations for real estate investment.

B. Transit, Mobility, and Infrastructure

Mamdani has called for fare free buses and expanded public transit, arguing that mobility should be a public right.
Implementation will depend on budget priorities and cooperation from the state. The big question is whether the city can sustain these programs without service declines or funding shortfalls.

C. Public Safety and Institutional Reform

Crime and safety remain hot button issues. The new mayor has discussed community based public safety initiatives and expanding mental health response teams instead of traditional policing.
Watch for changes in NYPD oversight, resource reallocation, and how crime statistics respond.

D. Economic Development and Labor

The new administration will likely focus on regulating the gig economy, protecting workers, and boosting small businesses.
Expect debates over minimum wage increases, union expansion, and corporate tax reform. These moves could redefine the city’s business climate for years to come.

E. Social and Cultural Identity

Mamdani’s victory, he’s the first Muslim and one of the youngest mayors in city history, signals a shift in New York’s political and cultural identity.
Expect expanded support for immigrant communities, cultural funding, and programs promoting equity across the five boroughs.

F. State City Relations and Fiscal Realities

New York City’s success depends heavily on its relationship with the state government. Funding for housing, transit, and education all hinge on Albany’s cooperation.
Watch for how the mayor navigates state politics to push through his agenda.

The Risks and Constraints

Let’s be honest, this won’t be easy.

Fiscal risk: Ambitious programs need money, and the city’s budget is already strained by pension costs, infrastructure needs, and debt.
Bureaucratic resistance: City agencies can be slow moving and protective of the status quo.
Economic reaction: Aggressive tax or regulatory changes could lead to business pullouts or slower investment.
Voter patience: Residents expect results fast. If progress lags, enthusiasm will fade.
Political friction: Competing interests among unions, developers, activists, and state officials could stall major reforms.
Global factors: Economic downturns or federal policy shifts could undercut city revenue and limit options.

What It Means for the Future of New York

Short Term: The First 24 Months

Expect a wave of new initiatives, housing pilot programs, transit reforms, and symbolic budget shifts. There will be tension between idealism and practicality as the mayor tests the limits of his mandate.
If voters see visible improvements, public trust will grow. If not, skepticism will mount quickly.

Medium Term: Two to Four Years

If Mamdani’s agenda takes root, New York could evolve into a new model for equitable urban governance.
We may see
More mixed income housing developments
Community focused urban planning
Expanded transit access in underserved neighborhoods
Stronger worker protections and wage growth
Renewed focus on neighborhood identity over luxury development

If these efforts succeed, other cities may follow suit. If they fail, New York could face political backlash and a return to centrist governance.

The Broader Meaning

This election is more than a local contest, it’s a test of what kind of city New York wants to be. Will it continue to serve as a playground for global capital, or will it reclaim its reputation as a city that works for everyone?

The answer lies in execution, not slogans. The new mayor’s team must prove they can deliver on promises without alienating the business community or overwhelming the city’s finances.

If they pull it off, New York could become a national model for inclusive urban transformation. If not, the city risks deepening divides and eroding public trust in progressive politics.

Final Word

New York City stands at a crossroads. The electorate demanded change, and Zohran Mamdani has a bold vision to deliver it. But vision alone won’t lower rents, fix subways, or balance budgets.

What matters now is action, turning bold promises into tangible results that touch people’s daily lives.

If Mamdani can do that, this election will be remembered as the moment New York redefined what’s possible in modern urban leadership. If he can’t, it’ll go down as just another cycle of hope meeting the hard wall of reality.

Either way, New York’s story is far from over, and the world is watching.

Authorities in Bath Township, a quiet suburban area about 15 miles northwest of Akron, say the case is now being investigated as a mass shooting involving juveniles.

The shooting happened just after midnight inside a home on Top O Hill Drive, a neighborhood known for its large homes and family friendly reputation. Investigators confirmed the residence was being rented through Airbnb in violation of local zoning laws that ban short term rentals. Despite those restrictions, the house had been booked for what was described as a private birthday celebration.

The Scene: A Party Turns Chaotic

Neighbors told investigators they noticed an unusual amount of activity Saturday evening, with cars lining the street, music playing loudly, and dozens of young people gathering at the home. By around 11:30 p.m., the crowd had grown larger, with most of the attendees believed to be between 15 and 20 years old.

Shortly before midnight, police began receiving several noise complaints. Then came multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire and injured people.

“When our officers arrived, they found complete chaos,” Bath Township Police Chief Ernie Goodrich said. “There were people running in every direction, and several victims were found both inside and outside the home.”

Authorities confirmed that nine individuals were injured. All were taken to nearby hospitals, and as of Sunday afternoon, none of the injuries were believed to be life threatening. The victims included both males and females, and several were under 18 years old.

Victims Range from Teens to Young Adults

Officials did not release the names or exact ages of the victims but confirmed that most were minors and the rest were in their late teens or early 20s. One person reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, while others were treated for graze wounds or minor injuries. A few individuals were injured while fleeing the scene, including one person who fell and broke an ankle during the rush to escape.

“We’re thankful that everyone survived,” Chief Goodrich said. “Given the number of shots fired and the size of that crowd, this could have easily turned into a tragedy with lives lost.”

Airbnb Confirms Rental Violation

Bath Township authorities confirmed the home was listed on Airbnb, even though short term rentals are not allowed in the township. Airbnb’s policy also prohibits parties and large gatherings, particularly events involving underage guests.

Local officials said the property owner could face penalties for renting the home illegally and for allowing it to be used for an unsanctioned event. The township’s zoning rules have long banned short term rentals to prevent exactly this type of situation.

“This community is residential, not commercial,” said a township representative. “We have those rules for a reason to protect residents and maintain safety. Unfortunately, this house was used in a way that violated that.”

Social Media’s Role in the Party

Investigators say the party was promoted on several social media platforms and drew a crowd much larger than expected. Flyers and invitations were shared online throughout the day on Saturday, leading to what police described as a “flood of teenagers and young adults” arriving from different areas.

“It started out as a small birthday party,” one investigator said. “But once word spread on social media, the number of people showing up quickly got out of control.”

Law enforcement believes social media continues to play a significant role in the rise of these spontaneous parties, often organized without adult supervision and without the property owner’s knowledge of how many guests will attend.

Parents and community leaders have been urging teenagers to avoid such gatherings, warning that large unsupervised parties have a history of turning dangerous once alcohol, peer pressure, or disputes arise.

Police Seek Shooter’s Identity

As of Sunday evening, police confirmed that no arrests had been made. Detectives are reviewing cellphone videos, social media clips, and security footage from the neighborhood to identify who fired the shots.

Multiple shell casings were recovered from both inside and outside the home, leading investigators to believe that more than one weapon may have been used. Witnesses reported hearing several rounds, though police have not confirmed the exact number of shots fired.

Chief Goodrich said the department has been interviewing witnesses and encouraging parents to have their children come forward with any information or footage from that night.

“We know there were phones recording,” he said. “Someone knows who pulled that trigger. We’re asking them to do the right thing and help us bring accountability.”

Authorities have set up a secure online portal where videos and photos from the party can be uploaded directly to assist with the investigation.

Community Reaction: Shock and Frustration

Residents in Bath Township say they were stunned to wake up to police activity and crime scene tape on their usually quiet street. Many expressed frustration that an Airbnb was being used in violation of local laws, and that social media once again played a role in attracting an unsupervised teenage crowd.

“I moved here for peace and safety,” one resident said. “To hear gunfire in our neighborhood was unbelievable. We had no idea that house was being rented out.”

Local schools have been notified of the incident, and counselors have been made available to students who may have been affected or knew those involved.

Community leaders say this incident is a wake-up call for both parents and property owners. “We all have a role to play in preventing this kind of violence,” said one local official. “It’s about knowing what’s happening in our neighborhoods and making sure kids have safer options than unsupervised house parties.”

Short Term Rental Concerns Grow Nationwide

The Bath Township incident adds to growing national concern about the misuse of short term rentals for parties and events. Many communities have faced similar issues with homes being rented online for one-night gatherings that spiral out of control.

While platforms like Airbnb have put policies in place to ban parties and block risky bookings, enforcement continues to be a challenge. Technology can only go so far when individuals deliberately try to skirt the system by booking through different accounts or using misleading information.

Community advocates have called for stronger local oversight, background checks for renters, and heavier penalties for property owners who allow illegal rentals. “This isn’t just about noise or nuisance anymore,” one resident said. “It’s about safety.”

A Deeper Issue: Youth, Firearms, and Responsibility

The shooting also highlights broader concerns about youth culture, easy access to firearms, and the growing role of social media in fueling risky behavior. Police departments across the country report seeing more cases of gun violence among minors, often tied to impulsive disputes at parties or gatherings promoted online.

“Teenagers are finding ways to access guns faster than ever,” a Bath Township officer noted. “It’s not always about organized crime or gang activity. Sometimes it’s just a moment of anger or fear that turns deadly.”

Researchers studying youth gun violence say many of these incidents stem from social conflicts that escalate rapidly in group settings where weapons are present. Arguments over relationships, online comments, or peer rivalries can quickly explode when no adults are present to intervene.

Parents and educators have been encouraged to talk to young people about responsible decision making, digital behavior, and the dangers of attending unsupervised events promoted online.

Local Leaders Call for Action

In the aftermath of the shooting, Bath Township officials are reviewing enforcement procedures for rental violations and exploring new measures to identify and shut down illegal listings. Township trustees plan to meet with law enforcement this week to discuss community safety and prevention strategies.

There are also calls for greater parental involvement and community outreach to help reduce risky teen behavior. “This isn’t just a police issue,” said one township representative. “It’s a community issue. We need parents, schools, and local organizations working together to guide our youth toward safer decisions.”

The Investigation Continues

As investigators continue to process evidence and interview witnesses, police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The department is working with state crime labs to match ballistic evidence and trace weapons used in the shooting.

Chief Goodrich reiterated that his department will pursue every lead until the individuals responsible are identified. “We owe it to the victims, to their families, and to this community,” he said. “We’re not stopping until we find out who did this.”

Authorities have confirmed that nine people are now in custody following a mass shooting that left six people dead and more than two dozen others injured.

The shooting took place late Saturday night during Leland’s homecoming festivities, a tradition that normally brings together generations of families, alumni, and residents in one of Mississippi’s tight-knit communities. Instead, the sound of music and laughter was drowned out by gunfire and chaos.

According to investigators, twenty-six people were injured in total, with nineteen suffering gunshot wounds. Six victims lost their lives, turning what should have been a weekend of celebration into a scene of devastation.

The victims have been identified as 41-year-old Oreshama Johnson, 34-year-old Jamichael Jones, 19-year-old Calvin Plant, 25-year-old Shelbyona Powell, 18-year-old Kaslyn Johnson, and 18-year-old Amos Brantley.

Family members say these were people who loved life, who worked hard, and who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. One mother described her daughter as “a light who just wanted to dance and have fun.” Another relative said their loved one had come home from college just to celebrate the annual event that meant so much to the town.

The Investigation and Arrests

Authorities have confirmed that nine individuals are now in custody in connection with the shooting. Five of those names have been released publicly.

Teviyon L Powell, 29, charged with capital murder

William Bryant, 29, charged with capital murder

Morgan Latimore, 25, charged with capital murder

Terrogernal S Martin, 33, charged with capital murder

Latoya A Powell, 44, charged with attempted murder

Four additional suspects have been arrested, though officials have not yet released their names.

The investigation has drawn the attention of multiple law enforcement agencies including the FBI, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and local police departments. Officials say the shooting may have started after a disagreement between several individuals during the event, though the full motive remains under investigation.

A Town in Shock

Leland is a small city where everyone knows everyone. It is the kind of place where families gather in front yards, children play in the streets, and neighbors look out for each other. That sense of safety and familiarity has now been replaced by grief and disbelief.

Residents describe the scene as chaotic. Shots rang out suddenly, and within seconds, panic spread through the crowd. People ran for cover, others dropped to the ground, and some tried to shield loved ones from the gunfire.

Community members have since turned the downtown block into a makeshift memorial filled with candles, flowers, and photos of those who were killed. The grief is heavy, but so is the frustration. Many are asking how a celebration meant to unite a community could turn so deadly so fast.

One local resident said, “We can’t keep losing our sons and daughters to this kind of violence. Something has to change.” Another added, “We used to look forward to homecoming. Now, we’re scared to even show up.”

The Path Forward

Authorities say they are continuing to collect evidence, review video footage, and interview witnesses. More arrests are possible as the investigation moves forward.

City officials and church leaders have also come together to organize counseling sessions and community meetings, hoping to help residents heal and address the rising concern about violence in small towns like Leland.

For many families, the road to healing will be long. Parents are mourning children. Friends are mourning friends. And a town that once found pride in its homecoming spirit now finds itself struggling to recover from one of the darkest weekends in its history.

What happened in Leland is not just another crime story. It is a reminder of how fragile life can be, how quickly joy can turn into sorrow, and how urgently communities across the South need real solutions to prevent violence before it starts.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Tips can be shared anonymously, and every detail could help bring closure to grieving families and accountability for those responsible.

For now, the people of Leland are left holding on to memories of those lost, demanding answers, and praying that their small town never has to experience a night like this again.

On one side, the city still feels like it is under a constant watch, with uniformed troops standing near metro stations, museums, and parks. On the other side, many of the states that sent those troops to the nation’s capital are preparing to bring them home this fall.

Several states are now set to withdraw their National Guard contingents from DC in the coming weeks. The move could change the federal presence in the city and raise new questions about how far Washington can go in deploying troops on American streets.

Which States Are Leaving

States including Georgia, Ohio, Mississippi, South Carolina, and West Virginia are expected to complete their pullout between October and November. Together, they represent a large share of the National Guard forces currently stationed in DC.

Other states such as Alabama, Louisiana, and South Dakota have not announced firm exit dates, but discussions are already underway to scale back their missions. The DC National Guard, however, will remain active through the end of the year.

Why This Shift Matters

A Changing Presence in the Capital

For months, the city has looked and felt more militarized than ever. Residents have grown used to the sight of armed troops patrolling neighborhoods, standing outside landmarks, and monitoring public spaces. Many Washington locals have voiced concerns that this has become the new normal, blurring the line between public safety and military control.

The withdrawal will reduce that presence, but it will not remove it completely. Federal orders still keep the DC Guard in place, meaning the city will continue to operate under a federal security structure until new directives are issued.

A Question of Power and Politics

The decision to pull out troops is not just about logistics—it is also about politics and authority. Several state leaders have openly said they are rethinking the long term role of their National Guard units in federal operations.

DC officials have also challenged the legality of using Guard forces to police a city that has no governor and limited autonomy. The ongoing debate could set an important precedent for how the federal government interacts with local jurisdictions in the future.

A Signal to Other Cities

Washington is the test case. Other large cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland are watching closely to see what happens next.

If the troop drawdown in DC continues smoothly, it could encourage local leaders to assert more control over their own public safety decisions. But if the federal government reverses course, it could open the door for more troop deployments in other major cities.

How We Got Here

Earlier this year, the federal government declared a crime emergency in Washington, arguing that a stronger security response was needed. Thousands of National Guard members were deployed from multiple states to assist with policing and crowd control.

Critics argued that the move exaggerated the situation, noting that crime rates in DC had actually fallen in several categories compared to previous years. Still, the deployment continued, and at its height more than two thousand Guard members were stationed in the capital.

Because DC’s Guard answers directly to the President, city officials had limited power to oppose or modify the orders. That structure has long been a point of tension between local leaders and the federal government.

What to Watch This Fall

As the withdrawals begin, there are several key issues that urban communities across the country will be watching:

Whether states follow through on their promises to bring troops home on schedule.

Whether DC regains full control over its policing and emergency response systems.

Whether this moment sets a legal and political precedent that limits federal use of troops in cities.

How residents respond once the visible military presence begins to fade.

What kind of long term impact this experience leaves on public trust and city security policy.

The Bigger Picture

The pullback of National Guard troops from Washington is more than a matter of logistics. It is a signal of changing power dynamics between states, cities, and the federal government. It is also a test of how America defines safety, authority, and democracy in its own capital.

As troops prepare to return home this fall, the eyes of the country are on Washington once again. What happens there will echo far beyond the city limits, shaping how every major city responds when the lines between policing and military power begin to blur.

It was supposed to be another Southern tradition under the lights. But instead, the sound of celebration turned into chaos as multiple shootings tore through football games in Mississippi and Alabama, leaving families in shock and towns searching for answers.

Mississippi: Homecoming Turns to Heartbreak

In Leland, Mississippi, what should’ve been a proud homecoming weekend ended in bloodshed. After the game, as crowds filled the downtown streets, shots rang out, cutting through the music and laughter. When the smoke cleared, four people were dead and many more were injured. Witnesses say the crowd scattered as the sound of gunfire echoed off the buildings, turning a moment of joy into tragedy.

Hours later, in Heidelberg, another small Mississippi town, two more lives were taken in a separate shooting tied to homecoming festivities. Both communities are now facing an unthinkable loss and trying to understand how a celebration of unity turned into a night of fear.

Law enforcement is investigating both incidents, with several victims still fighting for their lives. But the greater question remains: how did we get here?

Alabama: A Celebration Interrupted

Meanwhile, over in Montgomery, Alabama, what was supposed to be a weekend of pride and culture after a major football matchup turned into panic when gunfire broke out in a crowd downtown. Two people were killed, and more than a dozen were hurt, many of them teenagers just trying to enjoy the night.

Witnesses describe the scene as chaos, a crowd running in every direction, families diving for cover, and the sounds of sirens replacing the music that once filled the air.

What This Means for Us

For our communities, this isn’t just about another headline or a body count. This is about sacred spaces being violated. Friday night football, homecoming weekends, and local gatherings are woven into the fabric of Southern Black life. They’re supposed to be safe havens where we bring our families, show our pride, and celebrate the next generation.

Now, people are wondering if they can even bring their kids to a game. If they can still gather and feel safe.

We’re not talking about big city violence anymore. These shootings happened in small towns where everybody knows everybody. Where names carry weight. Where mamas are raising sons with manners but still have to pray every time they walk out the door.

The Real Conversation

We can point fingers all day, but the truth is this — our communities are tired. We’re tired of burying children. We’re tired of feeling unsafe at events that are supposed to bring us together.

The easy answer is to call for tougher policing. The harder one is to admit we’ve got cultural wounds that need more than a quick fix. We need mentorship. We need unity. We need to reclaim our spaces.

And let’s be clear, this isn’t about politics. It’s about people. It’s about making sure every mother, every coach, every student, and every band member can come home safe after the lights go out.

Voices From the Ground

“I just remember ducking and praying,” one woman said. “I looked around and saw people I grew up with laid out on the ground. That’s not supposed to happen here.”

A coach in Heidelberg put it plain: “We teach discipline, teamwork, respect. But how do you teach kids to survive bullets?”

And from Montgomery: “We came to celebrate, to see the bands, to feel pride. And now all we feel is fear.”

Where We Go From Here

We owe these families more than sympathy. We owe them action.

Full investigations with no cover ups and no quiet dismissals.
Community accountability where people speak up before tragedy strikes.
Real healing through counseling, mentorship, and forums that rebuild trust.
Gun responsibility because freedom without control is just chaos.

Final Word

This is bigger than a football game. This is about reclaiming the soul of our communities before it’s too late. The South has always been known for its faith, its family, and its strength.

Last night tested all three.

But one thing is certain — we won’t let violence define our Friday nights.

Urban City will continue to follow this story and highlight the people behind the headlines because this isn’t just news. It’s our neighborhood. It’s our story.

Authorities say the child tested positive after the assault, and the community is furious and heartbroken.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened in unincorporated St. Petersburg. Investigators say McAffee admitted to having sexual contact with the boy and also revealed that he was HIV positive. The child later tested positive for the virus, confirming the worst fears of investigators and the victim’s family.

McAffee is currently facing charges of sexual battery of a child under 12 and is being held on a $250,000 bond. Authorities have kept additional details private to protect the young victim’s identity. The case is still under investigation.

A Crime Beyond Words

Let’s be honest this isn’t just another criminal headline. This is evil at its most personal. An eight-year-old child should be learning how to ride a bike, not living with a disease that will follow him for life.

This case hits deeper because HIV isn’t just an infection. It’s a lifelong condition that changes everything medical treatment, mental health, trust, and how the victim will view the world. There’s no walking away from that.

It’s not only the act itself that disgusts people. It’s the idea that someone could knowingly pass along a virus to a child. It’s beyond criminal it’s cruel.

What Needs To Happen Now

This is one of those moments when the system needs to show up and show out. Urban City believes the response to this case should be strong, clear, and without excuses.

Full investigation and full justice. No plea deals, no soft sentences, no delays. If this man is guilty, he should never see freedom again.

Victim-first care. The child deserves top medical care, therapy, and protection from media exposure. Every resource should be focused on his recovery and well-being.

Public education. Parents and communities need better tools to spot danger early. Conversations about child safety, consent, and HIV awareness need to start at home and in schools.

Accountability. If there were missed warning signs or earlier reports that went ignored, the public deserves to know why.

Urban City’s Take

At Urban City, we don’t soften reality we expose it. This story isn’t about sensational headlines; it’s about justice, awareness, and truth.

We’ll keep following this case as it unfolds. We’ll push for updates from investigators, legal experts, and health professionals. And we’ll make sure this child’s experience isn’t buried under red tape or courtroom silence.

Stories like this remind us why local voices matter. We talk about the real things that affect real people not just numbers, but lives.

This one hurts to even write. But sometimes the truth has to cut deep before anything changes.
