Key Takeaways

Mental illness is more common than often believed and is not a sign of weakness.

Sharing personal stories about mental health can help dispel myths and misconceptions.

Engaging in conversations within your social circles can have a significant impact on reducing stigma.

Unveiling the Truth about Mental Health

You’ve probably heard some myths about mental health, right? You’re not alone. Many folks think mental illness is rare or a sign of weakness. That’s simply not true.

When people like you share real stories, it helps break those misconceptions. Imagine the impact of starting a conversation in your circle! But there’s more to uncover about how you can help change the game.

Recognizing and Challenging Mental Health Myths

When it comes to mental health myths, it’s essential that we challenge them head-on because these myths can hold back entire communities. You’re not alone in this, and understanding myth recognition is vital to empowering urban communities. Every year, 1 in 5 American adults faces mental illness. It’s time for myth intervention. Myths about children not experiencing mental health issues are simply untrue. Open conversations with kids can reduce stigma and support their well-being. Accepting authentic emotional experiences is crucial for spiritual and mental growth, as it allows individuals to genuinely connect with their emotions and enhance their understanding of themselves. Understanding that most individuals with mental illness are victims of violence rather than perpetrators can help dismantle stereotypes and foster a more compassionate society. States with liberal policies often demonstrate longer life expectancies, underscoring the profound effect policy environments have on community well-being. Promoting myth intervention helps us all become allies. By recognizing the misconception that mental illness leads to violence, you can cultivate safer environments.

The Power of Personal Stories in Reducing Stigma

Recognizing mental health myths is just the start—personal stories pack the real punch in reducing stigma. Sharing genuine accounts, using storytelling techniques, boosts empathy and disrupts stereotypes. These narratives allow others to step into the shoes of those with lived experiences, revealing the narrative impact on attitudes beyond what stats can achieve. When you hear personal stories, society’s misconceptions about mental health get a reality check. You’ll find that stigma fades as the narrative unfolds, encouraging understanding and connection. Real-life stories, especially for youth, improve mental health awareness and inspire help-seeking intentions. Each shared story is a thread that weaves a supportive community net. By exchanging diverse accounts, you nurture dialogue and empowerment long beyond a single narrative breakthrough. Additionally, involvement in faith community activities enhances a sense of belonging, offering a critical support system in overcoming mental health challenges.

Strategies for Supporting Mental Health in Our Communities

Supporting mental health in our communities starts with empowering you—yes, you—right where you are. By engaging with community mental health programs, you’ll help in identifying and supporting those with common and severe mental disorders. Community engagement and mental health education are pivotal.

Here’s a quick snapshot:

Aspect

Benefit

Action

Policy Frameworks

Access equality

Advocate for integrated health policies

You can drive cultural relevance and well-being improvements by partnering across sectors. Let’s create thriving, supportive communities together!

Assessment

Challenging myths helps make mental health a safe topic. Picture Maria, sharing her struggle with anxiety at a local gathering. Her honesty inspired others to open up and support each other.

You can do the same—use your voice, start conversations, and help build a stigma-free community. Understanding grows when stories are shared.

Let’s champion mental health, welcoming empathy and awareness along the way. Together, we’ll create a more supportive environment for everyone.

For many, it’s just a mild case of the winter blues. But for others, the change in season brings something much deeper, heavier, and harder to shake — Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD.

While everyone can feel sluggish or less motivated during cold, dark months, SAD is not just about feeling down. It’s a form of clinical depression that follows a predictable pattern, usually appearing in the fall and winter and improving when spring returns. Experts say it can significantly interfere with daily life, relationships, and overall health.

To help people understand the condition and its treatments, Stephanie Cox, a professor in the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry at the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, shares key insights into how SAD develops, who’s most at risk, and what can be done to bring back the light even during the darkest months.

What Exactly Is Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depressive disorder that’s tied to seasonal changes. Cox explains that it occurs at certain times of the year, most often during the winter and especially in northern latitudes where sunlight exposure drastically decreases.

This lack of sunlight affects the brain in complex ways. Symptoms are thought to be related to reduced exposure to natural sunlight. This decrease in light can affect neurotransmitters in the brain, such as melatonin and serotonin, and disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm.

Those disruptions can alter mood, sleep, appetite, and energy, the key ingredients that shape mental health and day-to-day functioning. For someone with SAD, the result can feel like being trapped in an emotional fog that doesn’t lift until the days get longer again.

When the Darkness Feels Different

It’s normal to feel less energized in winter. Shorter days mean less sunlight, more time indoors, and fewer opportunities for physical activity or social connection. But Cox draws a clear line between temporary winter fatigue and SAD. Many people feel a bit lower in mood or energy when days are shorter. SAD, however, involves a cluster of symptoms that persist and significantly interfere with daily life.

The symptoms of SAD often mirror those of major depressive disorder, including

Persistent sadness or low mood

Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed

Fatigue or lack of motivation

Changes in sleep such as sleeping more or having disrupted rest

Difficulty concentrating

Feelings of hopelessness or guilt

Changes in appetite, particularly cravings for carbohydrates

Cox emphasizes that SAD is not just feeling lazy or unmotivated. It’s a serious mental health condition that deserves care and attention. Because SAD is considered a type of depressive disorder, its symptoms can be very similar and sometimes identical to major depressive disorder.

Who’s Most at Risk

While SAD can affect anyone, certain groups are more likely to experience it. According to Cox, the risk is higher among

Younger people

Women

Those with a family history of SAD

People with existing mood or mental health conditions

Geography also plays a big role. People living in northern regions, where daylight hours can be as short as eight or nine hours in winter, are much more susceptible. In southern states where sunlight remains more consistent, cases of SAD are less frequent.

But with remote work and lifestyle changes keeping many people indoors longer, even those in sunnier areas can develop symptoms of seasonal depression. Cox notes that reduced sunlight exposure, regardless of where you live, can still trigger the biological processes linked to SAD.

How the Brain Reacts to Less Light

Understanding SAD starts with understanding light’s role in our biology. Sunlight helps regulate two major brain chemicals, serotonin which affects mood, and melatonin which influences sleep and circadian rhythm.

During winter, lower sunlight levels can cause

Decreased serotonin, leading to feelings of sadness or depression

Increased melatonin, which makes you feel more tired or sluggish

Disruption of circadian rhythm, the internal clock that manages energy, mood, and hormones

This combination throws the body’s natural rhythm off balance, leaving people feeling tired, moody, and mentally foggy. Over time, this imbalance can lead to clinical depression if not addressed.

Recognizing the Pattern: When Symptoms Begin and End

Cox explains that winter-pattern SAD typically begins in the fall, lasts throughout the winter months, and then improves in spring when daylight increases. The pattern often repeats year after year, and once recognized, it can be a powerful signal to seek early treatment.

People who have experienced this predictable pattern may benefit from starting treatment or preventive strategies early in the fall. That means talking to a healthcare provider before symptoms become overwhelming.

Treatment Options That Can Help

The good news is that SAD is treatable. There are several effective methods to help rebalance brain chemistry, restore energy, and lift mood. Treatment plans often include one or more of the following.

1. Light Therapy (Phototherapy)

Light therapy is one of the most common and effective treatments. This involves sitting in front of a special light box that emits 10,000 lux of white light for about 30 to 60 minutes daily during the winter.

The light mimics natural sunlight and helps regulate serotonin, melatonin, and circadian rhythms. Most people notice improvement in energy and mood within a few days to a few weeks.

It’s important to use light therapy under medical supervision, especially for those with eye conditions or bipolar disorder.

2. Psychotherapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has been proven highly effective in treating SAD. Therapists help patients recognize negative thought patterns and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Behavioral activation, encouraging engagement in activities that bring joy or meaning, can also improve mood and motivation.

3. Medication

In some cases, antidepressants such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors are prescribed to help correct serotonin imbalances. Physicians often recommend starting these medications before winter symptoms begin, especially for people with a history of recurrent SAD.

4. Lifestyle Adjustments

Simple daily habits can make a big difference

Spend more time outdoors during daylight hours

Exercise regularly to release endorphins and improve sleep

Keep a consistent sleep schedule

Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains

Stay connected with family, friends, and community, as social isolation can worsen symptoms

The Role of Prevention and Early Action

Cox emphasizes that people who recognize a seasonal pattern in their mood should act early. Talking with a health care provider can help identify the best treatment options and timing for your specific situation.

For those who’ve battled SAD before, starting light therapy or medication in the fall before the worst symptoms hit can reduce their severity or prevent them altogether. Consistency is key. Maintaining treatment routines even on good days helps prevent relapse.

SAD in Urban Communities: The Overlooked Factor

In cities, where the hustle and bustle never stop, it’s easy to overlook seasonal depression. Urban residents might assume that because they’re constantly on the move, working, commuting, or scrolling late into the night, their fatigue or irritability is just stress.

But urban living can intensify SAD, not protect against it. Skyscrapers block sunlight, workdays are spent indoors, and even weekends are dominated by screen time. Add in gray winter weather, and it’s a perfect setup for reduced natural light exposure.

For people of color, particularly Black and Hispanic communities, SAD may also be underdiagnosed. Studies show that cultural stigmas, lack of access to mental health resources, and disparities in diagnosis contribute to fewer people receiving treatment even when symptoms are clear.

Understanding that SAD is a legitimate, biological condition, not a weakness or mood swing, is an important step in breaking that barrier.

What to Do If You Think You Have SAD

If you’ve noticed that your mood, energy, or motivation drop predictably every winter, here’s what you can do

Track your symptoms. Keep a journal of your energy levels, sleep patterns, and emotions through the seasons.

Talk to a healthcare provider. Mention any seasonal patterns and how they affect your daily life.

Ask about light therapy or counseling. Professionals can help determine whether SAD or another condition is present.

Build supportive routines. Make plans that encourage movement, social connection, and exposure to light.

Avoid isolation. Stay connected to people and activities that make you feel supported.

Remember, SAD is treatable and recovery often starts with recognizing that what you’re feeling has a name and a cause.

Bringing Back the Light

As Professor Cox explains, people who have experienced this predictable pattern may benefit from starting treatment or preventive strategies early in the fall. Awareness is the first step. The next is taking action, whether that’s getting a light box, talking to a therapist, or simply prioritizing time in the sun.

Winter doesn’t have to mean darkness. By understanding how Seasonal Affective Disorder works and how to fight back, you can take control of your mood and mental well-being year-round.

If you or someone you know struggles with depression or thoughts of self-harm, contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988. It’s available 24 hours a day across the United States.

Preventive care is more than a personal choice. It is a strategy that helps you detect issues early, prevent serious illnesses, and create a foundation for long-term well-being. By staying on top of routine screenings, keeping vaccinations up to date, and making informed lifestyle choices, you can protect yourself, your family, and the people around you.

Preventive care is not just about avoiding illness. It is about living your best life, improving quality of life, and setting an example for your community. It is about taking actionable steps now to ensure you enjoy years of health and vitality while reducing the risk of costly medical emergencies later.

Routine Screenings: Detect Health Issues Early

Routine screenings are a cornerstone of preventive health care. They allow doctors to detect conditions such as colorectal cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, and lung disease before they progress. Catching problems early significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and long-term survival.

Screenings like colonoscopies, mammograms, Pap tests, and low-dose CT scans are essential tools. Colonoscopies allow doctors to find polyps that could turn into cancer and remove them before they develop. Mammograms detect breast cancer in its early stages, which is critical for treatment success. Pap tests can identify cervical cell changes before they become cancerous. Low-dose CT scans can detect lung cancer early, especially in people who are at higher risk due to smoking or environmental factors.

Healthcare providers recommend annual mammograms for women between ages 45 and 54. Colorectal screenings are now suggested starting at age 45. Cardiovascular screenings, including monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, are essential in preventing strokes, heart attacks, and other serious complications. Regular screenings empower individuals to make informed choices, address issues early, and contribute to a healthier community overall.

Early detection is not just a personal benefit. Communities with higher preventive care participation rates have lower overall healthcare costs, fewer hospital admissions, and healthier populations. Making screenings a priority is an investment that pays dividends in both health and economic terms.

Vaccinations: Protect Yourself and Your Community

Vaccines are an essential part of preventive care at every age. While many people associate vaccines with children, staying up to date as an adult protects you and those around you. Vaccinations prevent the spread of infectious diseases and can significantly reduce the risk of severe illness or hospitalization.

For 2025, important vaccine updates include the pneumococcal vaccine, which is now recommended starting at age 50 rather than 65. COVID-19 booster recommendations have expanded for adults 65 and older, and there are new vaccines such as PCV21 and the mRNA RSV vaccine. Staying informed about vaccine updates is critical. Consulting the CDC schedule and speaking with a healthcare provider ensures that you are following the most current guidelines.

Vaccinations are not only personal protective measures but also community protective measures. Higher immunization rates reduce the likelihood of outbreaks and safeguard vulnerable populations, including infants, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions. Protecting yourself is a powerful act of community service.

Daily Lifestyle Choices: Small Steps, Big Impact

Preventive care extends beyond routine medical visits. The everyday choices you make about diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management play a huge role in maintaining health.

Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats can prevent chronic illnesses and extend life. Research suggests that incorporating more plant-based foods can add several years to your life while lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Reducing the consumption of processed foods and sugary drinks is equally important for long-term health.

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to prevent disease. Walking 7,500 steps daily can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by more than 40 percent. Engaging in just 21 minutes of brisk walking each day can lower the risk of heart disease by 30 percent. Physical activity also supports mental health, boosts energy levels, helps manage weight, and strengthens muscles and bones.

Sleep and stress management are equally critical. Chronic sleep deprivation increases the risk of obesity, heart disease, and mental health issues. High stress levels can elevate blood pressure, weaken immunity, and increase inflammation in the body. Practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, journaling, or even spending time outdoors can dramatically improve mental and physical well-being.

Lifestyle choices also set a powerful example for others. Families and communities benefit when individuals prioritize healthy habits. Kids are more likely to eat vegetables and exercise when their parents lead by example. Communities with higher participation in healthy behaviors experience lower rates of preventable diseases and stronger overall resilience.

Affordable Preventive Care: Accessible for Everyone

Cost should never be a barrier to preventive care. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, many essential screenings, vaccinations, and chronic disease management services are available at no out-of-pocket cost. This includes cancer screenings, immunizations, blood pressure and cholesterol checks, and diabetes management.

Digital tools like MyHealthfinder make preventive care even more accessible by providing personalized health recommendations in English and Spanish. The platform also offers community resources, clinic locators, and reminders for upcoming screenings or vaccinations.

Medicare and Medicaid ensure that older adults and low-income individuals have access to preventive care services. Clinics and local health centers also provide affordable screenings and vaccinations for those without insurance. These resources make it possible for everyone to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health.

The Economic and Long-Term Benefits of Prevention

Preventive care is not only beneficial for your health but also for your finances. Staying up to date with screenings, vaccines, and wellness visits can reduce healthcare costs by up to 30 percent. Preventive strategies help avoid expensive hospitalizations, long-term treatments, and complications from chronic diseases.

Personalized preventive programs can save individuals between $150 and $300 per month after three years. Reducing chronic disease management costs, cutting hospital stays, and avoiding costly emergency treatments create tangible long-term savings. Communities benefit as well, with reduced healthcare spending, more productive workforces, and improved quality of life.

Beyond finances, preventive care is an investment in your future. People who prioritize prevention often experience fewer illnesses, more energy, and higher overall satisfaction with life. Prevention gives you the ability to enjoy life fully, participate in community activities, and be present for family and friends.

Taking Action: Start Today

The best time to prioritize your health is now. Schedule your routine screenings, check your vaccination status, and adopt lifestyle habits that support long-term wellness. Every action counts. Even small steps, such as adding more fruits and vegetables to your meals, taking a short walk each day, or getting a recommended vaccine, can have a profound impact on your health.

Prioritizing preventive care is a commitment to yourself and your community. It is a way to ensure that you live longer, stronger, and more vibrant. By investing in your health today, you set a powerful example for others and help build a healthier, more resilient community.

For more information on preventive care, health tips, and resources, visit urbancitypodcast.com and take the first step toward a healthier future today.

I’m Chasity MacMillan, and I’m thrilled you’re joining us on this spiritual journey a journey into the profound depths of the human soul, where we explore the divine connection that unites us all, whether female or male.

This podcast is dedicated to bringing you inspiring stories, enlightening discussion, and transformative insights designed to help you connect with your inner self and the world around you. Whether you’re seeking spiritual growth, inner peace, or a quiet moment of reflection, our episodes aim to uplift, guide, and inspire. We hope you find solace, encouragement, and a deeper understanding of yourself through this journey.

Personal Story & Inspiration

Back in November 2009, I was navigating my own trauma and pain, asking the Lord, Where are the women who have endured struggles like mine? How did they heal? During that time, I often found myself alone, feeling the weight of my circumstances.

In those moments, I turned to prayer, seeking comfort and guidance. One place I found peace was Murder Beach. This was way back when you could use Priceline to bid on an oceanfront room, and I would spend time alone, away from the noise, especially during moments of anxiety or panic. It was my space for self-love, self-care, and reflection and it became a source of strength.

I also drew strength from the stories of other women who had walked similar paths. Women who, despite adversity, discovered hope and healing through faith. Their resilience inspired me to keep moving forward, even when the road seemed impossible.

One story that has always resonated with me is Hannah’s story in 1 Samuel 1. Hannah prayed for years for God’s revelation and blessing, even when misunderstood and ridiculed. Her silent prayers reflected deep worship and unwavering hope. Her journey reminds us that even in our darkest moments, faith can be a guiding light.

Hannah’s honesty about her pain and longing for restoration teaches us that vulnerability and persistent faith are powerful. In 1 Samuel 2, her prayers were answered, and she responded with gratitude and joy. Her journey shows us that pain can transform into strength when we trust in God’s promises.

Encouragement & Resources

If you or someone you know is facing hardship or abuse, remember: you are not alone. Millions have walked this path and found hope. Reach out to local resources, support organizations, or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAVE. Taking the courageous step to seek help can be the beginning of healing and a brighter future.

Your story does not have to end with pain. Through God’s strength and restoration, you can rise as a warrior, finding hope, peace, and purpose. Let your faith be the foundation for healing and growth. James 5:15 reminds us that the prayers offered in faith can heal. Philippians 4:6 encourages us to present our needs to God with trust that He hears every prayer.

Even in illness, cancer, disease, or domestic violence, God still heals. Hope in divine design. Supplication earnestly presenting your needs to God is powerful. Trust that He is listening and ready to answer.

Practical Steps for Healing & Self-Love

Self-love: Set aside time to release expectations that do not bring peace. Reflect on your burdens, practice forgiveness, and allow love and joy to fill your heart.

Release unnecessary weight: Let go of pressures from your environment and others’ expectations. Starting in 2017, faith-based counseling helped me face fear and challenges, and discover beauty, clarity, and growth on the other side.

Your courage to seek help and embrace healing can inspire others. Your in-between is a space for growth, strength, and new beginnings. Embrace it.

Awareness & Gratitude

In October, we honor awareness months for domestic violence, breast cancer, liver cancer, and blood cancer. Our prayers go out to all empowering, inspiring, and supportive communities coming together in love and service. Seek local resources if needed and remember the spiritual tools available to you.

Closing Thoughts

Thank you for joining me on this journey into the Deepest Within You. I hope today’s discussion inspires you to connect with your inner self. Remember, self-exploration and personal growth is a lifelong journey. Every step brings you closer to fulfillment and purpose.

Continue exploring biblical principles and spiritual teachings that resonate with you. Apply them in your daily life and embrace your in-between. You will strive, grow, and glow. I pray, decree, and declare that these words, led by the Holy Spirit, bring revelation and alignment with God’s purpose in your life.

Have a beautiful and glorious week. God bless, and much love.

For thoughts or experiences to share, reach out at urbancitypodcast.com or chasitybmcmillen@yahoo.com

Key Takeaways:

Professional athletes are increasingly vocal about their mental health challenges, challenging existing taboos.

This openness is prompting sports leagues to establish comprehensive mental health support systems.

Technological advancements are providing athletes with personalized mental health tools to boost their performance.

The Impact of Mental Health Awareness in Sports

Did you know that athletes in professional sports are now speaking up about their mental health struggles more than ever? This bold shift is creating a ripple effect, breaking taboos, and inspiring leagues to develop robust support systems.

Thanks to technological advancements, athletes have access to tailored mental health tools, empowering them to enhance their performance. Curious to discover how these changes are transforming the sports world and beyond?

Famous Athletes Speaking Out

When it comes to mental health in sports, famous athletes like Naomi Girma are shaking up the conversation and making waves for a brighter future.

You’re seeing athlete testimonials break barriers and reduce stigma, inviting more open, honest discussions about mental health.

Naomi Girma, through her heartfelt essay *This Is For Katie*, shares her emotional journey, highlighting the vital need for mental health awareness. Her initiatives, like ensuring World Cup coverage includes mental health topics, resonate with fans and athletes alike. Her effort, as seen in the Create the Space Retreat, organized for NWSL players, is a testament to her commitment to fostering discussions about mental health in the sports community.

Naomi Osaka and Michael Phelps echo similar commitments, showing vulnerability in their public struggles. They’re not just sharing stories; they’re catalysts for change.

Through their openness, athletes like Simone Biles and Allison Schmitt become part of a collective voice, normalizing these essential conversations, inspiring awareness, and promoting stigma reduction.

League Initiatives

Diving into league initiatives, major sports leagues like the NBA and NFL are stepping up to prioritize mental health.

They’re not just talking the talk; they’ve implemented key league policies to support athletes.

The NBA requires each team to have licensed mental health professionals on staff and a consulting psychiatrist available for medication needs. This shows their commitment to mental health standards.

Meanwhile, the NFL guarantees that teams have behavioral health clinicians on-site regularly, reflecting their focus on athletes’ well-being.

College athletes aren’t left out either. The NCAA works hard to guarantee mental health resources are accessible, aligning with updated practices.

Whether you’re a pro, student, or Olympian, these initiatives highlight how seriously these organizations take mental health.

How Mental Health Improves Performance

After exploring how leagues are stepping up to support mental health, let’s talk about what this means for performance.

Good mental health enhances cognitive control and performance outcomes. Here’s how:

Enhanced Focus: By maintaining lower anxiety levels, you can concentrate better during competitions, leading to consistent performance.

Stress Management: When equipped with coping mechanisms, you handle stress better, which boosts resilience and reduces injury risks.

Boosted Motivation: Positive mental health drives your motivation, helping sustain athletic development and confidence during high-pressure moments.

Team Dynamics: With strong mental health, you communicate better, building trust and cohesion within your team.

Tools Being Used

Your mental health toolkit just got a tech upgrade. Utilizing digital resources like mood trackers and screening tools is empowering. These resources provide anonymity, allowing athletes to manage mental health in privacy. Adopt these tools, combine tech with practice, and you’ll improve focus, performance, and peace of mind.

You’re part of a powerful movement that’s reshaping sports from the inside out. Imagine athletes like brilliant stars, lighting the way by sharing their stories and struggles.

Leagues echo with the passion of new initiatives, offering lifelines and innovative tools. Feel the rush of a game where mental wellness fuels focus and unity.

Your support and awareness cultivate a vibrant community, championing mental health as a cornerstone of strength and resilience. Together, you’re unstoppable.

I’d like to say welcome you to everyone around the world.
This show I’m gonna be so excited to discuss for the month of October. Whether you
are seeking spiritual growth, inner peace, or simply a moment of reflection.
Our episodes are designed to uplift and guide you on your path. We hope you find
silence, inspiration, and a deeper understanding of yourself through our podcast.
Thank you for being a part of our community. Deepest within you, finding your in
-between and living your in -between through faith, hope, and love.
Within my own journey of healing, more than asking more than asking to be relieved
from the things that was troubling me at that time, which I had an unending list
my mind couldn’t consume. First, that Salon in 5 and 18 teaches to give thanks in
all circumstances, but this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
This type of prayer is for his gratitude and thanks to God for his goodness, his
action, and his blessing. When we give gratitude in every situation, not only when
life is easy or good, we are allowing God to store up blessings in time when we
least expect them. In every situation, no matter how difficult, there is a reason
for giving thanks and trusting in God. Falling God’s will encourage just to be
thankful for his goodness. We experience a deeper experience of the connection of
God’s guidance and provision for us along our journey. Rather than deny the reality
of our situation of considering evil to be good, it’s a call with us about having
a positive spiritual discipline within your healing journey. We will be within this
action in our lives. Saferness is not a luxury, but a poor component of the gateway
of faith in receiving his blessings throughout our healing journey. Romans 12 and 12,
in which was one of my favorites within deep distress within my healing journey.
Be your fan hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer. Some years ago,
I found the scripture while buying four coffee cups. One of them says,
Romans 12 and 12. One of them says, patient and affliction. One told me to be your
friend hope. And the last one told me faithful in prayer. See how God shows up
when we least expect it, but it is what I needed within that season. Or let me
say season with many as of my healing journey. I reflected on that scripture through
prayer meditation. Didn’t proceed to act in accordance with its spirit to grow by
succumbing, expressing my thoughts to Christ. The verse encouraged us to remain joyful
and confident in God’s promises, even during uncertain times. In times of hardship,
trouble and suffering with a for relative and frustration. In times of tribulation,
when the internal or external pressures are life, we have a continuous and steadfast
engagement in prayer which serves as a lifeline for God’s strength and power.
Pace and I trust in enjoying God’s future promises and the knowledge we receive that
He will make things new, providing strength for the present, or now,
or the future. We prepare our hearts to trust Him during hardship, understanding that
patience has been developed through our practice and perseverance and faith. Our
prayers are a place to find strength, to live by our faith, end up between,
remain connected to God for vision and guidance, even in times of testing of our
faith. We know that he would keep his promises in every dream or vision,
even as we live through uncertain times. Call to action, or give in,
or focus on gratitude practice with a journal of prayer, writer or praying,
one of five things daily, you are grateful for. Small steps are always on pathing
the layers of healing. Share with others within a safe space or stranger to be more
vulnerable. Begin within faith without words, a hope, and ended in his love,
in his blessings as a present, even in challenging situations. At the end of our
day, reflect on those things that was noble, true, right, pure,
lovely, or praiseworthy to establish peace in a grateful heart within us.
Engaging daily worship, making time to silence life when life is life.
And as we say today, in worship and faithfulness, even when it’s hard, as the
living testimony of my own journey, it bought so much strength when I was at my
weakest in my healing, being a wife, a mother, having younger children with so many
activities. Life was very busy busy for me as my intercourse was draining from
trauma or pain. God words spoke upon an intercourse with no one see or no.
It’s the inner spirit that is between you and him. How wonderful is that that you
can relieve all your flaws, everything that’s deep within you. He sees that he hears
you. He knows everything that you go through day by day. He knows when you’re
needing him. And he’s right there. I’m a living testimony. During those moments,
it was a breath of fresh air to fight sleeplessness at night with only getting four
hours daily. Showing off a word, not within my own strength, but his strength.
Being able to leave my problems at home and show up daily with a smile for others.
Yes, it was feeling not focused on myself, but viewing through the lens of my
surroundings, giving me a sense of being able to step away from my own journey of
healing. If you are joining me from a place of brokenness and hope, the Lord God
is always near to brokenhearted. He healed, he hears those in need of him,
The mentor requested him, “Oh,” I had a request, and I prayed, and those requests
was fulfilled by him during those times, probably not within that moment,
but when I least expected it, I’m a living witness of testimony that he hears you
with an open heart of forgiveness before him.
As this month brings awareness to the master balance, the men who have endured it
through faith, hope, and love. As we pray to raise awareness and unify efforts to
end domestic violence, we keep things often in deliverance, including supporting
survivors and promoting healthy relationships. The color purple symbolize the movement.
Purpose intentional recognize awareness, color for domestic violence. Purpose, symbolize
and Symbolizing peace, glory, survivor, honor, dedication, and roar to the call.
Some of those symbolize the meaning of the attributes of Christ, that unify promises
within healing through ups. If you’re a victim, always seek help by contacting an
organization like the National Domestic Balance Hotline at 1 -800 -799 -SAFE.
Again, that’s 1 -800 -799 -7233.
In my own healing journey and overcoming emotional, mental, and physical, I’m grateful
to the Lord God, first and foremost, for the self -love to myself, a trust and a
process through faith, hope, and love, and imparting and deepest within me,
find in my in -between and live in my in -between. I would like to thank my
husband, Eric, and my children, they, Sean, and Kayla, and Nya for their love,
support, and dedication through the years. Thank you, thank you, and thank you, and
to my mom, Bessie, by everyday conversation, just sometimes just to see her smile,
gave me a sense of joy. I will leave with you today some scriptures from brokenness
in the Old Testament where the scripture says Psalms 34 and 18. The Lord is near
to the broken and save those who are crushing spirit. Psalms 51 and 17 states,
“The sacrifice of God are a broken spirit and they broke it in the trip to a
part, O God, you will not despise.” Psalms 147 and 3,
he heals the broken hearted and banished their womb. Isaiah 61 and 1,
the spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has an ornament to preach
good tidings to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted. New Testament,
Matthew 5 and 3, bless all the poor in spirit, for there is the kingdom of heaven.
Luke 4, 17 -21, Jesus quote Isaiah,
Sister 1 and 1, according to his own mission, demonstrating that brokenness is a
human condition and he came to restore. 2 Corinthians 1 -3 -4,
Let’s be the God, and our Father, our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercy,
and the God of all comfort, who comfort us in all our afflictions,
so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort
for which we ourselves are comforted by God. In 1st Previews 5 and 7,
cast out all anxiety on him because he cares for you.
I’m leaving you today three small steps to hold onto your faith and hope and love
with him and within the deepest within yourself. Number one, morning prayer or
meditation worship. Start your day with a few minutes of prayer meditation. This
helps us to positive on for your day and allows you to connect with God.
You can use this time to express gratitude, see guidance, see your attentions for
the day. Number two, scripture reading. Dedicate a specific time each day to read
the Bible or a scarce text. This can be done in the morning, during a lunch break
or before bed. Reflect on those passages and how they are proud to your life.
Number three, journal. Keep a spiritual journal, spiritual journey, where you can
write down your thoughts and prayers of reflection. This practice helps you track
your spiritual growth and provides a space for self -examination and believing.
God sees it all. He hears your prayers even through writing. As we close and come
to the end of today’s episode, I want to thank you for joining me on this journey
of exploring the deepest within you. I hope our discussion has inspired you to look
within to connect with your inner self. Remember the path to self -awareness,
self -explore, self -discovery, and personal growth is a continuous journey. Every step
you take brings you closer to fulfillment and purpose deepest within you. Embrace the
journey, trust the process, allow yourself to glow and grow through the spirit.
I encourage you to continue exploring the biblical principles and spiritual teaching
that resonate with you and to apply them in your daily life out of your in
-between. And thank you, thank you, thank you for being a part of this conversation.
If you have any thoughts or experience you’d like to share, please reach out to
urbancitypodcast .com or chastitydmatmillan @yahoo .com.
That’s C -H -A -S -I -T -Y -D -S -N -D -L -T -A -M -C -M -I -L -L -A -N @yahoo .com.
Until next time, you will strive, you will grow, and you will glow with living your
in -between.
Companies and communities implement tools and policies such as smart beds and flexible hours to prioritize sleep.

The Growing Importance of Sleep

Isn’t it time for a wake-up call? In 2025, sleep health takes center stage as everyone realizes rest is essential for vibrant living. You see, chronic sleep deprivation isn’t just about feeling tired – it links to mental health struggles and diseases.

Companies and communities now adopt tools and policies to enhance sleep quality. From smart beds to flexible hours, they know rest isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Curious about these changes?

Research Breakthroughs

When it comes to sleep health research in 2025, you’re at the heart of groundbreaking discoveries that impact us all. Early biomarker screening is now a powerful tool reducing Alzheimer’s risks, especially within Black and Hispanic communities. This enhances cognitive health by addressing sleep disruptions tied to social inequities. Sleep tracking apps may contribute to sleep anxiety through orthosomnia, highlighting the importance of balancing technology use with mindful sleep practices. Pediatric research is also taking giant leaps forward. Grants fuel studies on how sleep affects children with conditions like tuberculosis and autism. Using advanced technologies, data from young patients worldwide—spanning Uganda to the USA—revitalize understanding of pediatric sleep disorders. The role of spiritual guidance in fostering emotional resilience is gaining recognition, inspiring further investigation into the link between spirituality and sleep quality. Such research breakthroughs don’t happen in isolation. They’re part of a multidisciplinary effort, uniting neuroscience, psychology, and public health. You’re seeing history in the making, one dream at a time!

Sleep Tech Products

At the forefront of sleep health innovation, sleep tech products take center stage with their promise of revolutionizing how we experience rest.

These devices, particularly the wearable evolution, are transforming our approach to sleep. From smart bands and rings to next-gen headbands, they seamlessly integrate into everyday life.

Monitoring innovations offer detailed insights, collecting data on your sleep duration, stages, and interruptions. With AI-based diagnostics and adaptive technologies, you can easily manage sleep at home.

The global market, valued at an impressive $27 billion in 2025, illustrates the growing demand.

Parenting, work, or pursuing a dream? You’ll find a sleep tech solution tailored just for you, as these products become essential for people seeking better rest and enhanced well-being.

Work Culture and Rest

Although work’s central in our lives, finding balance is vital—especially when rest’s often sacrificed on the altar of productivity. Companies are adopting workplace flexibility and strong rest policies to tackle these challenges head-on.

You might find that sedentary work and extended hours are pushing many into a rut, swamping sleep schedules and torpedoing your well-being. Flexible work hours and structured break times help reduce fatigue and create a healthier cycle.

With 65% of Americans facing sleep problems, it’s clear that work culture plays a big role. By valuing rest and avoiding the overwork trap, you can enhance productivity and mood.

Let’s not ignore the power of a little downtime—your body, mind, and workplace will thank you!

Health Impacts

Sleep’s more than just a nightly pause for your body; it’s a cornerstone of your health and vitality. Chronic sleep deprivation affects everything from your mental health to cardiovascular health.

When you don’t get enough sleep, you’re more likely to face heightened anxiety, increased stress, and even depression. Sleep deprivation also weakens your immune function, making you prone to infections.

Metabolic disorders like obesity and type 2 diabetes become more probable due to sleep loss, compounding health burdens. Your cognitive performance takes a hit too—impaired concentration and poor decision-making can leave you struggling at work or school.

Finally, poor sleep can increase your heart disease risk and elevate systemic inflammation, showcasing just how essential sleep is for your overall well-being.

Expert Advice

Jumping into the domain of sleep health, we’re here to release some expert-backed secrets that could transform your nights into restful wonders.

Experts emphasize sleep techniques like the “4-7-8” breathing method and progressive muscle relaxation to boost your relaxation and sleep onset.

They recommend avoiding blue light before bed to prevent melatonin suppression. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends, helping your body’s internal clock sync up.

Create a serene sleep environment: dark, quiet, and cool works best.

Experts suggest being mindful of lifestyle factors—ditch caffeine late in the day and opt for healthier eating habits.

To fight sleep anxiety, consider digital detoxes and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Follow these expert recommendations, and restful nights will soon be second nature.

Assessment

You’ve seen it firsthand: prioritizing sleep is no longer a luxury but a necessity. “Early to bed, early to rise” truly makes you healthier and wiser.

Welcome the innovations and workplace shifts championing sleep health. Your well-being—and the community’s—thrives when rest becomes a shared priority.

It’s empowering to see how understanding sleep’s role leads to a brighter, resilient future for everyone. Let’s rest easy, knowing we’re building a healthier world together.

Early Intervention Strategies for Youth

Imagine a world where kids get the help they need before small problems turn into big ones. Early intervention strategies empower youth and engage communities to tackle mental health issues early.

Did you know that half of mental health conditions start by 14? Yet, many go undiagnosed. By prioritizing early action, you can transform lives.

Here’s how you can support this change:

Encourage youth engagement: Involve young people in mental health discussions and solutions.

Promote community support: Create safe spaces and inclusive programs within neighborhoods.

Support legislative efforts: Advocate for policies like the EARLY Minds Act for broader preventative funding.

Engagement with spiritual practices like mindfulness can also boost emotional resilience and foster a sense of belonging among youth.

With these steps, you’re not just preventing mental illness but creating promising futures. Engage now, because the earlier we act, the more lives we change.

Assessment

So, you’ve probably heard about how AI and VR are gearing up to transform mental health by 2025, right? It’s pretty exciting stuff, knowing that these technologies will bring personalized, immersive care that’s both engaging and effective.

Picture this: chatbots that totally get what you need and VR experiences that help you tackle anxiety or PTSD head-on. By blending mental and physical health, we’re ensuring a holistic approach for everyone.

Together, we’re moving into a future where innovation meets empathy, benefiting our diverse communities. Let’s embrace this change for brighter, healthier tomorrows!

The sport is physical, gritty, and unapologetically tough — much like the way many men approach their health. But the truth is this: football isn’t just about touchdowns and trophies. It’s a mirror reflecting the state of men’s health the good, the bad, and the downright dangerous. The same culture of toughness that fuels football glory also drives men to ignore warning signs, skip checkups, and downplay pain until it’s too late.

From concussions to chronic pain, from locker room camaraderie to post-career depression, football offers lessons that extend far beyond the game. Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a die-hard fan, or just someone trying to get healthier, the field has something to teach you.

Head Hits and Hidden Damage

One of the biggest health concerns in football and men’s health in general is the brain. Concussions have dominated headlines, but research shows it’s not just the big knockout hits that matter. Sub-concussive blows, the kind linemen and linebackers take dozens of times in a game, add up. Studies using advanced mouthguard sensors show hundreds of head acceleration events in a single season, even for youth athletes.

Now, most men aren’t strapping on pads every Sunday, but the lesson is clear: ignoring small, repetitive injuries adds up. That bad knee you never rehabbed? That constant back pain you chalk up to “getting older”? Left untreated, small hits to your body and brain become long-term problems.

Playing Through Pain The Toughness Trap

Football has a long-standing culture of “playing hurt.” Players are celebrated for grinding through sprains, bruises, even broken bones. It makes for great highlight reels, but it also feeds the dangerous mindset men adopt in everyday life: toughness means silence.

Statistics show men are far less likely than women to visit a doctor for preventive care. They delay checkups, downplay symptoms, and often only show up at the ER when things have gone south. Sound familiar? The same mentality that keeps a player in the game with a bad ankle also keeps men out of the clinic until it’s a crisis.

But here’s the truth: real strength is prevention. Getting your blood pressure checked, screening for diabetes, or talking openly about depression isn’t weakness — it’s a smarter game plan.

The Mental Health Blind Spot

If concussions are the visible wound of football, mental health is the invisible one. Studies have shown that more than half of professional footballers report experiencing symptoms like anxiety, depression, or distress during their careers. The stigma of admitting vulnerability is heavy, and the locker room mantra of “man up” only makes it worse.

The same pattern exists off the field. Men die by suicide at nearly four times the rate of women in the United States. Yet, men are also less likely to seek mental health treatment. Football culture mirrors this societal blind spot: vulnerability is punished, silence is rewarded.

It’s time to flip that script. When top athletes like Brandon Marshall or Dak Prescott speak openly about their struggles, it sends a message: strength includes asking for help.

The Fitness and Teamwork Advantage

Of course, football also offers some positive blueprints for men’s health. The physical training cardio, strength, discipline highlights the benefits of regular exercise. Even casual sports or structured workouts can reduce risks of heart disease, obesity, and high blood pressure, which remain leading causes of death for men.

But beyond the body, football provides a powerful lesson in community. The locker room bonds, the sense of brotherhood, the accountability of a team all of these improve mental well-being. Men outside of sports often lose those connections as they get older, making isolation a silent health risk. Finding a team, whether it’s through rec leagues, barbershop conversations, church groups, or even fantasy football chats, can provide the same boost.

Post-Career Pain: The Long Game

When the lights go down and the cheering fades, many retired football players face chronic pain, arthritis, sleep issues, and depression. The transition from athlete to ex-athlete is brutal. That same reality plays out for everyday men after a lifetime of ignoring their health: the long game is lost if the body breaks down too soon.

The message is simple don’t just think about the next game or the next season. Think long-term. Men need to prioritize sustainable habits: stretching, recovery, regular checkups, and nutrition that fuels rather than depletes.

Turning the Game Around

So, what can men take away from the gridiron?

Don’t ignore the little hits. That nagging pain or recurring symptom needs attention before it turns into something permanent.

Redefine toughness. Taking care of your body and mind is strength, not weakness.

Find your team. Build a support network, whether it’s friends, family, or peers, that holds you accountable for your health.

Play the long game. Invest in your health now so you’re not sidelined later.

Final Whistle

Football season is more than entertainment it’s a case study in how men treat their health. The sport’s highs and lows reflect a culture that celebrates toughness but often neglects wellness. If men can learn from the lessons on the field, they can turn the game around off it.

Because when the season’s over and the stadium lights fade, the real win isn’t on the scoreboard it’s in living longer, healthier, and stronger.

The discovery has shocked students, staff, and communities near and far—and raised urgent questions about what really happened.

What We Know So Far

When and where: University police were notified at about 7:05 AM that a Black male’s body was seen hanging from a tree near the pickleball courts in the central part of the Delta State campus.

Who: The deceased is identified as Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old student from Grenada, Mississippi.

Immediate institutional response: Classes and all university activities were canceled for the day, including centennial events that were planned. Delta State University President Dan Ennis expressed heartbreak and offered condolences. Counseling and support services have been made available.

Investigation status: Authorities – including Delta State University police, Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office, Cleveland Police Department, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation – are involved. The Bolivar County Coroner has examined the body and reports seeing no broken arms or legs. As of the latest reports, no evidence of external physical trauma has been publicly confirmed.

What’s Unclear & What People Are Asking

This isn’t your average tragedy. Some details and public reaction underscore serious concerns:

Cause of death: Police say foul play is not currently suspected, leaning toward a possible suicide. But the coroner has not formally confirmed cause of death. Many want more transparency.

Allegations online: Social media is swirling with claims. Some say Trey showed signs of physical violence—broken limbs, bruises. His cousin (on TikTok) claimed a more sinister scenario, alleging injury before death. So far, local officials counter that there is no public evidence supporting those claims.

Historical context: Because Trey was Black, and because the imagery is horrifying (body on a tree), people are drawing connections to the racist history of lynching in the South. Even if authorities rule out foul play, the very form this tragedy took triggers pain, fear, and suspicion.

What This Means: Beyond One Campus

Let’s talk about implications. Because this story isn’t just about Delta State. It’s about how we handle trauma, race, institutions, and trust.

Campus safety & trust: When something like this happens, students need more than statements. They need honest communication, rapid updates, transparent investigations, and the assurance that their institution will protect—not gaslight—them.

Mental health: If suicide is the cause (still not confirmed), there’ll need to be serious reflection on what supports were or were not in place. Stress, isolation, discrimination college life already carries burden; this incident could spotlight existing gaps.

Race, symbolism, and red flags: The optics are brutal. A Black man found hanging from a tree carries historical, psychological weight for many people. Even without foul play, ignoring the symbolism or dismissing community concerns will breed mistrust. Institutions must engage rather than just deny.

Media & social media responsibility: Videos reportedly circulated; rumors and allegations spread fast. That squares with our digital age reality, but it also shows how quickly narratives can form with little evidence. Media outlets and individuals have responsibility: avoid sensationalism, verify before broadcasting, consider the emotional cost for family and community.

What to Watch For Moving Forward

Here are what I think are the key indicators we’ll need to monitor in the coming days:

Autopsy report: Time, cause, any indication of trauma, toxicology. That will shed a lot more light.

Findings from all investigating bodies: Not just DSU police, but independent/x-oversight (county, state). How thorough they are will matter.

Statement from Trey’s family: Their perspective, their accountability for silence or clarity. They’ll likely have more info that isn’t public.

Campus reaction: Vigils, forums, student activism. Are demands being made for structural changes (mental health, campus safety, racial climate)?

Policy review: What are DSU’s policies around mental health counseling, reporting of distress, campus environment for Black students? Will this event spur policy change?

Why Urban City Needs to Talk About It

This story touches our core: race, power, injustice. Urban folks live this history.

It’s not just Southern history—it’s ongoing. When something triggers the echoes of lynching, it forces us to ask: have things really changed?

Urban City audiences expect that we don’t let these stories slide. We need to tell the real, sometimes ugly truth, so communities know, and maybe pressure for change.

Final Word

Right now, Trey Reed is gone, and that’s heartbreaking in itself. But how the aftermath is handled will echo forward—how the university responds, how the community demands accountability, whether public trust is rebuilt or further eroded. Make sure this story doesn’t become another headline everybody forgets next week. The pain, the questions, the history—all deserve full light and respect.

If you want, I can send you a press-ready version, or a version focused on the racial history angle, or even pull in similar cases for comparison. Which route do you want?
