How the killing of Renee Good forced America to confront federal force, immigrant fear, and what happens when government power collides with everyday people on city streets.

Good evening. This is Big Back Politics Live and I am Denise Milsap on urbancitypodcast.com and trhe Urban City Podcast App! . And tonight I am not here to soothe you! I am here to wake you the hell up.

Because if a woman can be shot in the face by a federal agent on a city street and the government can shrug and say “justified,” then this country is in some deep, dangerous shit.

Her name was Renee Good.
Thirty-seven years old.
A U.S. citizen.
Shot dead by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.

And the federal government wants you to believe she was a terrorist.

Let that poison sit in your mouth for a second.
A woman sitting in her car was labeled a terrorist after she was killed so the people who killed her could sleep better at night.

That is not law enforcement.
That is propaganda.

Now let me say something real slow for the folks who still believe every damn government press release.
When a government starts calling unarmed civilians terrorists, it is not trying to tell the truth.
It is trying to control the narrative.

This happened in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Not a border crossing.
Not a cartel hideout.
Not some battlefield.
An American city. With families, with kids, with people walking dogs and going to work.

Federal immigration agents rolled into that city in massive numbers, no coordination, no respect for local leadership, no concern for the people who actually live there. They came in like they owned the place.

And that arrogance got somebody killed.

Renee Good was in her vehicle. Agents surrounded her. One of them opened her door. Multiple armed people were standing around her. Anybody with a heartbeat would be scared in that moment. And when her car moved, instead of backing off, instead of stepping away, instead of trying to de-escalate, an ICE agent pulled his gun and fired.

They didn’t shoot the tire.
They didn’t shoot the engine.
They didn’t shoot a window.

They shot her in the face.

You don’t do that by accident.
You do that when you have decided that the person in front of you is disposable.

And then the government had the nerve to smear her after she was dead. To call her dangerous. To call her a threat. To call her a terrorist.

Well you know what I say? Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice EVERYWHERE!
How could this happen in a place thats supposed to be the greatest country on this planet? HOW??

Is that is how this system works?
First they kill you.
Then they assassinate your character.
Then they dare your family and your community to prove you deserved to live.

But here is the problem for them.

We saw the video.

We saw how the car was moving.
We saw where the agent was standing.
We saw that this was not some Hollywood action scene where a car was barreling down on a line of officers.

This was a woman boxed in by armed federal agents trying to get out of a terrifying situation.

And for that, she died.

Now ICE says the agent feared for his life.
They always say that SHIT!
Hell they said it when cops killed George Floyd!
They said it when cops killed Breonna Taylor!
They say it EVERY SINGLE time a badge turns a human being into a body on the pavement!

Fear is the universal excuse for killing people in this country.

But fear does not erase responsibility.
Fear does not justify execution.
Fear does not give you the right to end a life because someone made a move you didn’t like.

Minneapolis leaders didn’t buy the story.
The mayor didn’t buy the story.
The governor didn’t buy the story.
The people who live there damn sure didn’t buy the story.

They called bullshit.
And they were right.

Because this shooting was not an isolated incident. It was the predictable result of a federal government that has decided it can deploy armed agents into American cities like it’s conducting military operations.

Thousands of ICE agents poured into Minneapolis.
Neighborhoods were flooded with unmarked vehicles and armed personnel.
People were afraid to leave their homes.
Families were on edge.

And when you mix fear, guns, and unchecked power, somebody gets hurt.

This time it was Renee Good.

And let me make this plain for anybody listening.

She was not undocumented.
She was not being arrested.
She was not wanted.
She was not accused of anything.

She was there.

That was her crime.

Being present.
Being a witness.
Being a citizen in a place where the federal government decided to flex its muscle.

If that does not scare you, you are not paying attention.

Because if a U.S. citizen can be killed by a federal agent for being near an ICE operation, then the line between “target” and “bystander” has disappeared.

That means you.
That means me.
That means anybody who happens to be in the wrong place when power decides it is feeling jumpy.

This is not just about immigration.
This is about federal power.

This is about what happens when agencies that were created to handle paperwork and enforcement suddenly behave like armed occupiers in American neighborhoods.

ICE was never designed to be a community-policing organization.
They were designed to detain and deport.

So when you give them guns, authority, and zero accountability inside cities, you get tragedies.

And then you get lies.

Because the government knows that if people saw this for what it was, there would be hell to pay.

So they say terrorist.
They say threat.
They say danger.

And they hope you stop asking questions.

Well Big Back Politics Live is not stopping.

Because Renee Good cannot speak anymore.
So we will speak for her.

Because her family deserves the truth.
Her community deserves the truth.
And this country deserves to know what is being done in its name.

Minneapolis has already carried the weight of law enforcement violence. That city knows what it feels like when a life is taken and excuses come after. Now federal agents have written their own ugly chapter in that history.

And if they get away with it, they will do it again.

Because power without accountability always does.

So here is what I am telling you to do.

Do not let this fade.
Do not let them bury this.
Do not let them rewrite this.

Call your representatives.
Demand hearings.
Demand independent investigations.
Demand body camera footage.
Demand names.
Demand consequences.

Because if a federal agent can shoot a citizen in the face and walk away, then none of us are as free as we think we are.

This is Denise Milsap on urbancitypodcast.com and the Urban City Podcast App.
This is Big Back Politics Live! Stay locked in!

And we are NOT letting this go!!! Yall stay blessed…

Police Reclaimed—But Fear Lingers: What Trump’s 30-Day Takeover Means for Black and Brown Communities

The 30-day federal takeover of Washington’s police force, initiated by former President Donald Trump in early August, officially expired at midnight on September 10, 2025. The order, which temporarily shifted policing authority away from the city’s mayor and placed it under federal control, sparked national debate over public safety, civil rights, and the long-standing question of D.C.’s autonomy.

With the order lifted, Mayor Muriel Bowser’s administration has resumed oversight of the Metropolitan Police Department. Yet, while authority has technically returned to local leadership, the broader consequences of the takeover—particularly for Black, Brown, and immigrant communities—are still being assessed.

Why the Takeover Happened

Trump declared a 30-day emergency order citing rising crime rates, concerns over protests, and federal interests in securing the nation’s capital. The move activated the National Guard, expanded the role of federal law enforcement, and allowed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to increase patrols and checkpoints in certain neighborhoods.

The policy was controversial for several reasons:

D.C. has no voting representation in Congress and limited autonomy under the Home Rule Act, making it uniquely vulnerable to federal intervention.

Local leaders, including Mayor Bowser and the D.C. Council, argued the order undermined home rule and stripped residents of their right to self-governance.

Civil rights groups raised concerns that the expanded federal presence would disproportionately affect Black and Brown residents, who make up nearly half of D.C.’s population.

Community Impact

Although the takeover was temporary, its effects were widely felt. Reports from advocacy groups and community organizations highlighted three recurring themes:

1. Increased Federal Presence

National Guard troops and federal officers were stationed in key areas, including near government buildings and in several majority-Black neighborhoods. The visible military and police presence raised tensions, particularly in Southeast and Northeast D.C., where residents reported more frequent stops and searches.

2. Immigration Enforcement

ICE checkpoints were expanded during the emergency period, sparking fear among immigrant communities. Advocacy groups documented cases of families avoiding public spaces, schools, and businesses. While officials pointed to a decline in certain crime categories, community advocates argued that the fear of deportation created a chilling effect that silenced residents and reduced civic engagement.

3. Trust in Local Institutions

Perhaps the most lasting impact was the erosion of trust between residents and local government. Even though Mayor Bowser has regained oversight, some residents remain skeptical of the city’s ability to protect them from future federal interventions. The question of who truly controls D.C. policing remains unresolved in the eyes of many.

What Experts Are Saying

Policy experts emphasize that the expiration of Trump’s order does not eliminate the underlying structural issues.

On Autonomy: Constitutional scholars note that the Home Rule Act allows Congress—and, by extension, the President—to intervene in D.C. affairs at any time. This leaves the city’s residents without the same protections enjoyed by states.

On Safety vs. Civil Rights: Supporters of the takeover argue that short-term crime reductions and increased security justified the emergency measures. Critics counter that the reductions were marginal and came at the expense of civil liberties.

On Future Precedent: Legal analysts warn that Trump’s move could set a precedent for future presidents, regardless of political affiliation, to invoke federal authority over D.C. during times of unrest or perceived crisis.

What’s Next

Although the federal order has expired, its legacy is far from over. Several key developments are already unfolding:

Congressional Oversight: Lawmakers are considering new restrictions on D.C.’s home rule authority, including proposals that would allow federal officials to appoint the city’s attorney general or further expand emergency powers.

Community Recovery: Local nonprofits are mobilizing to rebuild trust, offering legal aid to immigrants and creating safe spaces for residents to share their experiences during the takeover.

Statehood Debate: The episode has reignited calls for D.C. statehood, with advocates arguing that full representation in Congress is the only way to prevent future federal takeovers.

Why This Matters for Black and Brown Communities

For the nearly 46% of D.C. residents who identify as Black and the growing Latino and immigrant populations, the takeover highlighted the fragility of civil protections in the capital. While not all residents were directly affected by federal enforcement, the experience reinforced longstanding concerns about systemic inequality, over-policing, and the vulnerability of communities of color to political decisions made far above their heads.

Conclusion

Trump’s 30-day takeover of D.C. policing is officially over, but the debates it sparked are far from settled. Local authority has been restored, yet questions remain about the balance between public safety, federal oversight, and the rights of D.C. residents.

For Black and Brown communities, the past month was not just a legal or political moment—it was a lived reality that underscored the city’s unique challenges. Whether the experience will lead to meaningful reforms or simply fade into history depends on what local leaders, Congress, and residents choose to do next.

Chicago and Massachusetts are now the center of newly launched campaigns—moves that raise tough questions for communities of color about safety, trust, and civil rights.

Chicago: “Operation Midway Blitz”

On September 8, federal agents launched Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), backed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), announced the operation would target undocumented individuals with criminal records.

Reports indicate as many as 300 federal agents could be staged at Naval Station Great Lakes, with operations potentially running for more than a month.

Illinois officials, including Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, quickly pushed back. Both leaders signed executive orders preventing local law enforcement from assisting ICE and vowed legal challenges to what they described as federal overreach.

At the street level, fear is already taking hold. Some schools and cultural events have seen lower turnout, with organizers of Pilsen’s Mexican Independence Day festivities even canceling gatherings out of concern for public safety.

Massachusetts: “Operation Patriot 2.0”

In Massachusetts, ICE rolled out Operation Patriot 2.0, building on an earlier crackdown this spring that saw more than 1,500 people arrested. The new phase is focused on individuals who were released from local custody despite ICE detainer requests.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu reaffirmed the city’s sanctuary status, pointing to the Boston Trust Act, which limits police cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Wu and other city leaders argue these measures are about protecting civil rights and ensuring that residents—documented or not—feel safe engaging with schools, hospitals, and local services.

Why This Matters for Black and Brown Communities

For Black and Brown communities, the impact goes far beyond immigration status. Here’s what’s at stake:

Fear and Distrust – When ICE is active, families often avoid schools, clinics, or cultural events. Everyday life becomes fraught with anxiety, even for citizens and legal residents.

Public Safety Concerns – Experts warn that aggressive federal operations undermine trust in local law enforcement. If communities fear deportation, they’re less likely to report crimes or cooperate with police.

Disproportionate Impact – While ICE insists these raids focus on those with criminal records, past data shows many caught up in sweeps are students, workers, or parents with no criminal background.

Civil Rights Flashpoint – With military-style deployments and threats of National Guard involvement, the line between public safety and heavy-handed occupation becomes blurred. That raises constitutional questions that state and city leaders are ready to fight in court.

The Bigger Picture

What’s unfolding in Chicago and Massachusetts is bigger than immigration enforcement—it’s a test of federal versus local power. Sanctuary cities were designed to shield communities from aggressive crackdowns, but the current administration is signaling those protections are no longer guaranteed.

For Black and Brown neighborhoods, the challenge is twofold: navigating the fear these operations create while also staying engaged in civic life. Leaders across Chicago and Boston are encouraging residents to know their rights, connect with legal aid, and support community defense networks.

The Bottom Line

ICE may call these “targeted operations,” but the ripple effects spread far wider than the individuals detained. Families, neighborhoods, and entire cities feel the weight of these actions.

For Urban City Podcast readers, the key question isn’t just about immigration policy—it’s about how communities of color prepare, protect, and push back when federal power lands on local streets.
