They remind her of the
shoulders upon which she stands and the responsibility she carries to build
pathways where few existed before.
A native of Moss Point, Mississippi, Theresa’s foundation was shaped early by
example. Her mother, a devoted educator, modeled discipline, service, and
selflessness. Her father instilled confidence, diligence, and unwavering
commitment to excellence. Together, they planted in her both humility and boldness, a balance that
continues to define her leadership style.
A proud alumna of Alcorn State University, Theresa excelled both academically and athletically. As a
member of the 2001 SWAC Women’s Tennis Championship team, she demonstrated competitive
focus and teamwork. She was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Delta Epsilon Chapter)
and earned both a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master’s in Agricultural Economics,
credentials that would serve as the framework for her multidimensional career.
Her professional journey spans agriculture, entrepreneurship, banking, political campaigns, city
government, small business consulting, marketing, and advocacy. But titles alone cannot capture the
breadth of her impact. In 2010, Theresa founded Red August, creating innovative pop-up shop
experiences designed to elevate women entrepreneurs and amplify their visibility. Her work
recognized a gap in access, and she filled it with intention.
As Deputy Director of Marketing for the City of Jackson, she launched the now-celebrated Food
Truck Friday at Smith Park, transforming public space into economic opportunity and community
engagement. It was more than an event; it was a strategic economic activation. In 2012, she founded
Fifty-Five Twenty, LLC, a public relations, advocacy, and business development agency serving local,
community-based, national, and global nonprofits.

Through this firm, Theresa sharpened her influence as a communicator, strategist, and policy
advocate, advancing conversations around economic justice, civic engagement, and social justice at
both state and federal levels. Her preparation for leadership is intentional. Theresa is a graduate of
Leadership Greater Jackson, the Delta Leadership Institute, and the Mississippi Black Leadership
Institute, programs that further strengthened her commitment to sustainable change.
For more than two decades, she has worked and served the people of Mississippi as a business
owner, community advocate, public voice, and policy expert. Her leadership is rooted in
relationship-building and effective communication. She understands that true power lies not in
visibility alone, but in access, and she dedicates her work to expanding that access for others.
Theresa’s career reflects expansion, but her becoming reflects illumination. She leads with clarity.
She builds with purpose. She advocates with conviction. Through every chapter, entrepreneurship,
public service, advocacy, and executive leadership, she returns to the truth that anchors her:
“We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within
us.”
In this Executive Spotlight, Theresa Grace Kennedy stands as a testament to becoming a woman
who understands that fear dissolves when purpose is embraced, and that leadership is most effective
when it clears the way for others to thrive.
Her light does not compete.
It illuminates.

Urban City Podcast and Inspired Resources, LLC proudly recognizes Mrs. Theresa G. Kennedy as a true
Architect of Impact, an executive leader whose influence strengthens institutions, mobilizes communities, and
builds generational legacy. In honoring her, we celebrate not only her achievements, but the enduring power of
leadership rooted in purpose, faith, and unwavering commitment to progress.

The Investor Who Turned Private Equity Into Community Equity

Thaddeus Myles here, family welcome back to Urban City’s Black Agenda, where we don’t just celebrate success, we talk about who controls the capital. Today is Day 19, and we’re honoring a man who moved from the margins of the tech world straight into the center of global finance Robert F. Smith.

Now most people don’t know his face, but they know his impact. Robert F. Smith built one of the most powerful private equity firms in the world, Vista Equity Partners, and turned it into a multi-billion-dollar technology investment empire. But what makes Smith special isn’t just the money it’s what he’s done with it.

Born in Denver, Colorado, Smith grew up in a middle-class Black family that valued education and excellence. He earned degrees from Cornell and Columbia, then went on to work at Goldman Sachs. But instead of climbing somebody else’s ladder forever, he built his own.

Vista Equity focuses on software companies the digital backbone of the modern economy. Smith understood early that technology wasn’t just innovation it was ownership. Whoever controlled the code controlled the future.

And he was right.

Smith became the richest Black man in America, not through entertainment or sports, but through investment and strategy. That alone changed the narrative of Black wealth.

But then he did something that shook the world.

In 2019, Smith stood at the Morehouse College graduation and announced he would pay off the entire student loan debt of the graduating class. Millions of dollars erased in a moment. Hundreds of Black families freed from generational debt.

That wasn’t charity that was economic justice.

Smith has since poured millions into HBCUs, STEM education, and financial literacy programs. He understands something most people never learn: freedom is tied to finance.

So today, Day 19 of Urban City’s Black Agenda, we honor Robert F. Smith the Generational Power who turned Wall Street into a tool for Black liberation.

I’m Thaddeus Myles, and you already know keep it locked to urbancitypodcast.com and the Urban City Podcast app all month long for Urban City Podcast’s Black Agenda, powered by 4AM Roastery at 4amroastery.com.

Today is Day 18, and we’re spotlighting a man who proved that being the best on the court doesn’t mean being silent off of it.

We’re talking about LeBron James.

From the moment LeBron stepped onto a basketball court in Akron, Ohio, it was clear he wasn’t ordinary. He was a prodigy. A once-in-a-generation talent. But what makes LeBron special isn’t just his stats, his championships, or his longevity. It’s how he turned that platform into something much bigger.

LeBron grew up with instability. Single-parent household. Financial struggle. Constant movement. But basketball gave him structure and he gave basketball everything he had.

By the time he reached the NBA, LeBron was already a global brand. But instead of letting corporations define him, he made sure he defined himself.

He built SpringHill Company, a media powerhouse producing films, documentaries, and series that center Black stories. He invested in tech. He bought into sports franchises. He positioned himself not just as a player but as an owner.

And then there’s I PROMISE School.

In Akron, LeBron built a public school for at-risk children, providing education, meals, family support, and college tuition. That’s not charity that’s infrastructure.

LeBron understands something critical: success without community is hollow.

And when injustice hits? LeBron speaks. Police violence. Voting rights. Education inequality. He doesn’t hide behind endorsements. He uses them.

Some people tell athletes to “shut up and dribble.” LeBron responded by building schools, funding scholarships, and launching media companies.

That’s power.

So on Day 18 of Urban City’s Black Agenda, we honor LeBron James the Fearless Legacy who turned athletic excellence into social and economic impact.

I’m Thaddeus Myles, and you already know keep it locked to urbancitypodcast.com and the Urban City Podcast app all month long for Urban City Podcast’s Black Agenda, powered by 4AM Roastery at 4amroastery.com.

From Stand-Up to Startup, Kevin Hart Built a Business Empire

Thaddeus Myles here, family welcome back to Urban City’s Black Agenda, where we don’t just clap for talent, we break down how it turned into power. Today is Day 17, and we’re spotlighting a man who didn’t let anyone box him into “just funny.” He built something that reaches far beyond the stage.

We’re talking about Kevin Hart.

Now most people see the jokes, the movies, the sold-out arenas, and the viral clips. But Kevin Hart’s real genius isn’t comedy it’s consistency and control.

Kevin came up in Philadelphia with a dream, a microphone, and a work ethic that bordered on obsessive. Early in his career, he bombed. A lot. Wrong audiences. Wrong jokes. Wrong timing. But instead of quitting, he studied. He rewrote. He refined. And slowly, he found his voice a voice that blended vulnerability, chaos, and humor in a way people could relate to.

Once he found that lane, he didn’t just drive in it he built highways.

Kevin Hart became one of the highest-grossing comedians in the world. But he didn’t stop at ticket sales. He launched HartBeat Productions, a company that creates films, television, and digital content giving him ownership of his own creative pipeline.

Then came Laugh Out Loud Network (LOL Network), a digital comedy platform that streams Black and diverse comedic voices. While Hollywood was still arguing about representation, Kevin built his own distribution channel.

That’s ownership.
That’s infrastructure.
That’s power.

And Kevin didn’t keep it all for himself. He used his platform to open doors for younger comedians, writers, and performers who didn’t have access to the mainstream. He created a ladder instead of just climbing it.

Now here’s the part most people don’t realize: Kevin Hart is also deep in tech and venture capital. He’s invested in startups, health companies, media platforms, and digital brands. He understands that entertainment is only one pillar equity is the foundation.

And after his life-threatening car accident in 2019, Kevin didn’t retreat. He came back focused, disciplined, and determined to squeeze every ounce of potential out of his second chance.

He launched Hart House, a plant-based fast-food chain focused on health and accessibility. Because even in business, Kevin thinks about community impact.

And yeah he’s human. He’s made mistakes. He’s taken hits. But what separates him is that he doesn’t fold he recalibrates.

Kevin Hart represents a new era of Black celebrity: one where we don’t just get famous we get free. Free from bad contracts. Free from dependency. Free from being owned by systems that never had our best interest.

So today, Day 17 of Urban City’s Black Agenda, we honor Kevin Hart the Relentless Hustler who turned laughs into a lasting legacy.

I’m Thaddeus Myles, and you already know keep it locked to urbancitypodcast.com and the Urban City Podcast app all month long for Urban City Podcast’s Black Agenda, powered by 4AM Roastery at 4amroastery.com.

Today is Day 15, and we’re talking about a woman who flipped fame into fortune, culture into currency, and Black womanhood into global business power.

We’re talking about Rihanna.

Now let’s get one thing straight Rihanna was already a superstar before she ever became a billionaire. The music? Classic. The fashion? Iconic. The influence? Global. But Rihanna didn’t settle for applause. She wanted ownership. And that’s what separates entertainers from empire builders.

Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty in Barbados, she entered the music industry young, talented, and underestimated. But while everyone else was focused on chart positions, Rihanna was quietly studying how the business worked. Who owned what. Who made the real money. Who had power when the cameras went off.

And when she was ready, she made a move that shocked the entire beauty industry.

Fenty Beauty.

Here’s why that moment mattered: for decades, beauty brands ignored Black women. Dark skin was an afterthought. Shades were limited. Models didn’t look like us. Products weren’t made for us. And companies wondered why Black women didn’t feel loyal to their brands.

Rihanna changed all of that in one launch.

She didn’t “add diversity later.” She started with it.
Forty foundation shades. Campaigns featuring every shade of Black. Products designed for all skin tones.

And what happened?

Fenty Beauty became a billion-dollar brand almost overnight. Not because it was trendy but because it was true.

Rihanna proved something the corporate world had ignored for decades:
Black women are not a niche we are the market.

Then she did it again with Savage X Fenty. While traditional lingerie brands sold fantasy, Rihanna sold realness. Women of all sizes. All shapes. All colors. No shame. No hiding. Just confidence.

That brand exploded too.

Now Rihanna wasn’t just rich she was powerful.

And here’s what makes her legacy even stronger: she didn’t abandon her roots to get there. She stayed Caribbean. She stayed Black. She stayed bold. In an industry that constantly pressures Black women to be softer, quieter, more “acceptable,” Rihanna stayed unapologetically herself.

And beyond business, she gives back. Her Clara Lionel Foundation funds education, disaster relief, and global humanitarian work. When people are hurting, Rihanna shows up not with photo ops, but with resources.

In 2026, Rihanna stands as a blueprint for modern Black success.
You don’t have to choose between culture and capitalism.
You don’t have to sacrifice authenticity to make money.
You don’t have to wait for permission to build something massive.

She turned fame into infrastructure.
She turned music into leverage.
She turned Black womanhood into economic power.

So today, Day 15 of Urban City’s Black Agenda, we honor Rihanna the Bold Billionaire who rewrote beauty, ownership, and what Black excellence looks like in the modern world.

I’m Thaddeus Myles, and you already know keep it locked to urbancitypodcast.com and the Urban City Podcast app all month long for Urban City Podcast’s Black Agenda, powered by 4AM Roastery at 4amroastery.com.

From Marcy Projects to Mogul, Jay-Z Built a Blueprint for Black Ownership.

Thaddeus Myles here, family welcome back to Urban City’s Black Agenda, where we don’t just talk about success, we talk about how it was built. Today is Day 13, and we’re stepping into a story that proves something Black folks have always known: talent gets you in the door, but ownership keeps you in the building.

We’re talking about Jay-Z.

Before the billionaire headlines, before the art collections, before the Super Bowl deals and boardroom seats, Shawn Carter was a kid from the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn. Hustling to survive. Watching his environment. Learning the rules of a game that wasn’t designed for him to win.

And instead of letting that environment define him, he studied it. He observed it. And eventually, he flipped it.

Jay-Z came up in an era when record labels made money off Black artists while keeping them broke. They owned the masters. They controlled the marketing. They dictated the contracts. Jay saw that trap early and he refused to fall into it.

So he did something revolutionary.

He built his own label.

Roc-A-Fella Records wasn’t just a music company it was a declaration. Jay-Z, Damon Dash, and Kareem Biggs said, “If they won’t invest in us, we’ll invest in ourselves.” And that independence allowed Jay-Z to own his music, his image, and his future.

From there, his career exploded. Albums. Tours. Awards. Influence. But Jay never lost sight of the bigger picture: music was the engine, but ownership was the destination.

So he expanded.

Clothing line: Rocawear
Sports management: Roc Nation Sports
Streaming: Tidal
Alcohol brands. Art. Real estate. Tech investments. Film. Activism.

Every move was strategic.

Jay-Z wasn’t just stacking money he was stacking leverage.

And when he became hip-hop’s first billionaire, it wasn’t just about the number. It was about what that number represented: a Black man who owned his intellectual property, his companies, and his narrative.

He also used that power to speak truth.

He addressed mass incarceration. Police brutality. Economic inequality. And when the NFL tried to use Black culture without respecting Black people, Jay-Z stepped in not as a mascot, but as a partner forcing conversations about reform, equity, and representation at the highest levels of American sports.

Love him or criticize him, one thing is undeniable:
Jay-Z changed the rules.

He showed young Black artists that you don’t have to sign your soul for success.
He showed entrepreneurs that you don’t have to ask permission to build empires.
He showed the culture that hip-hop isn’t just music it’s an economic engine.

And that’s why Jay-Z matters beyond the charts.

Because he turned the mic into a master key.

So today, Day 13 of Urban City’s Black Agenda, we honor Jay-Z the Empire Builder who turned hip-hop into power and ownership into legacy.

I’m Thaddeus Myles, and you already know keep it locked to urbancitypodcast.com and the Urban City Podcast app all month long for Urban City Podcast’s Black Agenda, powered by 4AM Roastery at 4amroastery.com.

Key Takeaways

Open discussions about finances within the family are essential for building a strong foundation of generational wealth.

Smart financial management through budgeting, saving, and strategic investments can significantly grow your wealth over time.

Estate planning is crucial for everyone, not just the super-wealthy, to ensure the proper transfer of wealth across generations.

Building Generational Wealth: Key Strategies

Building generational wealth from scratch might sound like a big task, but it’s possible with the right approach. Start by talking openly about money with your family and learning to manage your cash smartly through budgeting and saving.

Making wise investments in stocks, bonds, or real estate could help your money grow over time. Think about estate planning, too—this isn’t just for the super-wealthy. Curious about where this journey goes next? Let’s explore the steps together.

Strategies for Building a Strong Financial Foundation

Building a strong financial foundation starts with keeping an eye on your cash flow. Begin by understanding both income and expenses, as they guide your journey in budget management.

Creating a budget that aligns your needs with savings strategies is essential. Regular cash flow tracking keeps you aware and prepared for unexpected expenses.

Your savings strategies should include setting aside a portion of your income to build security and making sure you have enough when unplanned costs pop up.

Engaging in passive income streams like dropshipping and print-on-demand can further enhance your financial stability over time. It’s important to engage children in money conversations, as it promotes financial understanding and empowerment for future generations.

The family conversations can touch on financial literacy, which serves as a foundation for overcoming generational curses. Don’t forget the importance of an emergency fund—it’s your financial safety net.

As you manage your money wisely, you’ll empower not only yourself but also set a lasting example for your family and community.

Such practices lay the groundwork for stronger financial health and enduring wealth.

Crafting a Diverse and Resilient Investment Portfolio

As we strengthen our financial foundation, let’s channel that momentum into crafting a diverse and resilient investment portfolio.

It’s all about portfolio diversification and asset class selection, ensuring we spread our investments across various asset classes. Start by including core equity holdings for growth and fixed-income strategies for stability.

Real estate and commodities can add a buffer against market dips, thanks to their low correlation with stocks and bonds.

Don’t overlook alternative investments like hedge funds and structured notes—they’re good at balancing risk and reward.

International investments also help us tap into global growth while managing local downturns.

Finally, always maintain a balanced cash position—it’s key to seizing opportunities without taking on too much risk.

Utilizing Estate Planning to Preserve Wealth Across Generations

Estate planning is your tool for preserving wealth across generations, and it’s more than just wills and trusts. You’re ensuring that your family’s financial story continues to be written.

Consider estate taxes; they can take a chunk out of your hard-earned legacy, so understanding them is key. Use wills, trusts, and beneficiary designations to pass on assets smoothly.

Don’t forget powers of attorney and healthcare directives to protect decision-making during trying times. Explore lifetime gifting and irrevocable trusts to reduce taxation.

Family governance presents a roadmap to future prosperity. Addressing the Latin-X wealth gap through educational initiatives and equitable banking opportunities can help ensure that this process is inclusive for all communities.

Key Takeaways:

Embrace financial literacy as a tool for breaking financial chains and securing a prosperous future.

Place a strong emphasis on education to open doors and provide long-lasting opportunities.

Reclaim power by making informed choices and becoming a role model for future generations.

Transforming Family Legacies

Ever wondered how you can break the cycle of generational curses tied to money, education, and power? It's about more than just personal success—it's about rewriting the narrative for future generations. By adopting financial literacy, prioritizing education, and reclaiming power, you can transform your family's legacy and create opportunities that ripple through your community.

Imagine a future where your children inherit knowledge and resources that empower them to thrive. Let's explore how to make that vision a reality.

The Role of Financial Literacy in Overcoming Generational Curses

When it comes to breaking generational curses, financial literacy is your secret weapon.

It's the foundation of financial empowerment and effective money management. By understanding the ins and outs of budgeting and investing, you'll preserve wealth across generations. Open family discussions about wealth distribution can clarify intentions and responsibilities, further strengthening financial literacy and wealth preservation efforts.

Studies show 70% of families lose their fortune by the second generation due to poor money management. Don't let this be your story. Equip yourself with the knowledge to make informed decisions, safeguarding your family's financial future.

Recognize and avoid predatory financial products that target our communities. This awareness leads to empowerment, allowing you to choose wisely for long-term prosperity.

The Transformative Impact of Education on Generational Patterns

Just as financial literacy equips you with the tools to build and sustain wealth, education serves as a powerful catalyst in reshaping generational patterns. By investing in educational attainment, you're not just gaining knowledge—you're paving the way for intergenerational wealth. Families with at least two generations of college-educated members often see a significant boost in income and wealth, breaking cycles of poverty. Consider this:

America. Land of the free, home of the brave—at least that’s what the textbooks say.

But let’s be real, U.S. culture isn’t just about fireworks on the Fourth of July or a hot dog at a baseball game.

It’s a layered, complex, and ever-evolving mix of influences, traditions, struggles, and triumphs.

If you really want to understand American culture, you have to dig deeper—into its music, its communities, its economy, its resilience.

And when you look through the lens of urban life, the heartbeat of America becomes even more clear.

A Culture Built on Diversity

From day one, America has been a melting pot—or maybe a pressure cooker—of cultures, ideas, and ambitions.

Every wave of immigrants brought their own traditions, languages, and ways of life.

But while mainstream narratives often highlight the European influence, the truth is that Black, Latinx, Asian, and Indigenous communities have shaped U.S. culture just as much—if not more.

Think about it.

Jazz, hip-hop, rock & roll?

Black culture.

Street food, murals, and Spanglish slang in everyday speech?

Latino influence.

The rise of meditation, mindfulness, and fusion cuisine?

Asian and Indigenous roots.

The strength of this country doesn’t come from one dominant culture—it comes from the mix.

And in today’s America, urban centers are where that blend happens most visibly.

The Power of the Black Experience in American Culture

Let’s talk about the Black experience, because you simply can’t discuss American culture without it.

From the blues that told stories of pain and survival to the hip-hop that speaks truth to power, Black America has given the world a rhythm, a voice, and a blueprint for resilience.

But it’s not just music. Fashion, slang, sports, activism—so much of what becomes mainstream starts in Black communities.

Whether it’s sneaker culture influencing billion-dollar brands or social movements forcing national conversations, the cultural weight of Black America is undeniable.

At the same time, there’s a constant push and pull. The country loves Black culture but often tries to separate it from Black people.

The pattern repeats itself: Black innovation leads, the mainstream follows, and eventually, the originators get erased from their own creation.

But the beauty of urban culture is that it keeps evolving, keeps reinventing, and keeps reclaiming its power.

Money Moves: The Economy and the Hustle

If there’s one thing that defines American culture, it’s the hustle.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur building a business from the ground up, an artist trying to make it big, or a single parent juggling two jobs, the grind never stops.

But here’s where reality kicks in.

The American Dream—the idea that anyone can make it if they work hard enough—is not an equal playing field.

Generational wealth, redlining, wage gaps, and systemic barriers make it clear that some people have had a head start while others are still waiting at the starting line.

Still, communities of color have always found ways to build their own economies.

From Black Wall Street in Tulsa to modern-day urban business movements, the culture of self-sufficiency is strong.

Look at the rise of Black-owned banks, tech startups, and real estate investments.

The blueprint is there—it’s just about making sure more people have access to the tools to use it.

That’s why financial literacy is becoming a bigger conversation than ever. Ownership is power.

Real estate, stocks, entrepreneurship—whatever the path, the goal is the same: control over your own future.

As urban communities continue to push for economic growth, expect to see more businesses, more partnerships, and more wealth-building strategies that redefine what success looks like.

Politics and the Pulse of the People

America’s culture isn’t just shaped by entertainment and money—it’s deeply tied to politics.

In urban communities, politics isn’t just something you watch on the news. It’s personal.

When policies affect housing, education, healthcare, and policing, real people feel the impact every single day.

That’s why activism has always been a central part of American culture.

From the civil rights movement to today’s voter mobilization efforts, urban communities have always been on the front lines of change.

One of the biggest cultural shifts in recent years?

More people realize that their vote actually matters.

Gone are the days when young people ignored the ballot box. Now, social media is fueling a new wave of political engagement—one where voices from the block are just as loud as those from Capitol Hill.

And let’s be clear—politics is more than just elections. It’s the conversations in barbershops, the organizing in churches, the debates at family cookouts.

It’s about understanding how power works and making sure it works for you.

Health, Wellness, and Breaking Generational Cycles

Health is wealth—literally. And if there’s one shift happening in U.S. culture right now, it’s the focus on wellness in urban communities.

For too long, things like mental health, fitness, and nutrition were seen as luxuries. But now? People are reclaiming their health. More gyms in the neighborhood, more discussions about therapy, more emphasis on plant-based diets and holistic healing.

At the same time, access is still an issue.

Food deserts, underfunded healthcare systems, and environmental factors mean that the fight for health equity is far from over.

But that’s why community-driven solutions are popping up—Black-owned wellness brands, farm-to-table programs, free therapy resources.

Because when the system doesn’t serve you, you build your own.

The Future of U.S. Culture: What’s Next?

So, where is all of this headed?

One thing’s for sure—the old rules don’t apply anymore.

The next generation is rewriting the script on what it means to be American.

More diversity in leadership. Expect to see more CEOs, politicians, and cultural leaders coming from communities that were once overlooked.

A stronger push for ownership. Real estate, digital assets, businesses—more people want control over their own financial future.

The power of social media. Trends start in urban communities and spread faster than ever. If you’re not tapped in, you’re already behind.

A deeper emphasis on mental and physical health. Because true success isn’t just about money—it’s about a balanced, sustainable life.

Final Thoughts: The Culture Is Ours

U.S. culture isn’t just something that happens on TV or in history books. It’s alive. It’s evolving.

And it belongs to the people who create it.

If you want to understand America, look at the communities shaping the future.

The entrepreneurs, the artists, the activists, the families grinding every day to build something better.

That’s the real culture. That’s the real America.

And as long as the people keep pushing forward, the future is limitless.
