They remind her of the
shoulders upon which she stands and the responsibility she carries to build
pathways where few existed before.
A native of Moss Point, Mississippi, Theresa’s foundation was shaped early by
example. Her mother, a devoted educator, modeled discipline, service, and
selflessness. Her father instilled confidence, diligence, and unwavering
commitment to excellence. Together, they planted in her both humility and boldness, a balance that
continues to define her leadership style.
A proud alumna of Alcorn State University, Theresa excelled both academically and athletically. As a
member of the 2001 SWAC Women’s Tennis Championship team, she demonstrated competitive
focus and teamwork. She was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Delta Epsilon Chapter)
and earned both a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master’s in Agricultural Economics,
credentials that would serve as the framework for her multidimensional career.
Her professional journey spans agriculture, entrepreneurship, banking, political campaigns, city
government, small business consulting, marketing, and advocacy. But titles alone cannot capture the
breadth of her impact. In 2010, Theresa founded Red August, creating innovative pop-up shop
experiences designed to elevate women entrepreneurs and amplify their visibility. Her work
recognized a gap in access, and she filled it with intention.
As Deputy Director of Marketing for the City of Jackson, she launched the now-celebrated Food
Truck Friday at Smith Park, transforming public space into economic opportunity and community
engagement. It was more than an event; it was a strategic economic activation. In 2012, she founded
Fifty-Five Twenty, LLC, a public relations, advocacy, and business development agency serving local,
community-based, national, and global nonprofits.

Through this firm, Theresa sharpened her influence as a communicator, strategist, and policy
advocate, advancing conversations around economic justice, civic engagement, and social justice at
both state and federal levels. Her preparation for leadership is intentional. Theresa is a graduate of
Leadership Greater Jackson, the Delta Leadership Institute, and the Mississippi Black Leadership
Institute, programs that further strengthened her commitment to sustainable change.
For more than two decades, she has worked and served the people of Mississippi as a business
owner, community advocate, public voice, and policy expert. Her leadership is rooted in
relationship-building and effective communication. She understands that true power lies not in
visibility alone, but in access, and she dedicates her work to expanding that access for others.
Theresa’s career reflects expansion, but her becoming reflects illumination. She leads with clarity.
She builds with purpose. She advocates with conviction. Through every chapter, entrepreneurship,
public service, advocacy, and executive leadership, she returns to the truth that anchors her:
“We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within
us.”
In this Executive Spotlight, Theresa Grace Kennedy stands as a testament to becoming a woman
who understands that fear dissolves when purpose is embraced, and that leadership is most effective
when it clears the way for others to thrive.
Her light does not compete.
It illuminates.

Urban City Podcast and Inspired Resources, LLC proudly recognizes Mrs. Theresa G. Kennedy as a true
Architect of Impact, an executive leader whose influence strengthens institutions, mobilizes communities, and
builds generational legacy. In honoring her, we celebrate not only her achievements, but the enduring power of
leadership rooted in purpose, faith, and unwavering commitment to progress.

How Mrs. Willie Jones Built Scalable Opportunity Through Workforce Innovation and Purpose-Driven Leadership

Urban City Podcast Presents: Women’s History Month By Felicia Brookins• 5 min read

In Mississippi’s evolving economic landscape, few leaders have shaped opportunity as
intentionally and consistently as this executive powerhouse. With more
than two decades of experience spanning transportation, workforce
development, staffing, human resources, and commercial driver
training, she has built not just companies, but pipelines of possibility.
Her leadership story is rooted in economic empowerment.
As Owner of Dependable Source Corp (1995–Present), she has supplied
experienced, professional, and DOT-certified commercial drivers to
partners throughout the South. Under her leadership, the company has
been recognized among the Largest Minority-Owned Businesses in

Mississippi, a distinction that reflects scale, sustainability, and strategic excellence.
But she did not stop at staffing.
In 2000, she founded DSC Training Academy, becoming the first African American woman in
Mississippi to establish a truck driver training school. Through DOT-certified commercial driver
training programs across the state, she has opened doors for individuals seeking stable, high-
demand careers. Her academy represents more than instruction; it represents access, mobility,
and generational impact.

Her career foundation began in administration and operations. As Chief Administrative Officer
for Nelson, Thompson, Pegue, Thornton & Spurling Law Offices in California, she managed
complex legal operations and organizational leadership. Later, as Operations Manager for MCH
Transportation, she oversaw driver coordination, scheduling, and regulatory compliance,
building the operational expertise that would later fuel her entrepreneurial success.
Her influence extends far beyond business ownership. Since 2010, she has served as President of
Women for Progress of Mississippi, Inc., leading initiatives centered on political participation,
economic development, and education. Under her presidency, she launched Women for Progress

Media and created the Monthly Lunch & Learn program, platforms designed to inform, equip,
and elevate working women across the state.
She also serves as:
 Creator and Co-Host of Women for Progress Media
 Host of The Working Woman Report Podcast
 Board Member and Community Programs Director for Mississippi Coding Academies
 Chair of the Personnel Committee for the Hinds County Economic Development
Authority Board

Her leadership philosophy is clear: sustainable economic growth begins with workforce
development, education, and strategic collaboration.
The recognition she has received reflects both scale and substance. Her awards include:
 2024 Image Award in Business/Leadership – Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
 2023 Most Influential African American Award – Our Mississippi Magazine
 2020 Candace Award for Economic Development – National Coalition of 100 Black
Women (Central MS Chapter)
 2019 Businesswoman of the Year – Our Mississippi Magazine
 2018 Women of Vision Award – Women’s Foundation of Mississippi
 2018 Mississippi Top CEOs – Mississippi Business Journal
 2016 Largest Minority Owned Businesses List – Mississippi Business Journal
 2021 Who’s Who Mississippi Women Oprah Winfrey Award
 2026 Woman of the Year – The Mule Train Historical Society

Her academic preparation includes a Bachelor of Arts in Public Management from Millsaps
College, along with studies in Office Administration and Accounting from Draughon’s Business
School and Santa Monica College. Yet accolades alone do not define her legacy. What defines
her is infrastructure-building.
She builds companies that create jobs. She builds training academies that change earning
potential. She builds organizations that amplify women’s voices. She builds economic bridges
where barriers once existed. In the Women’s Executive Spotlight Series, she stands as a model of
sustained leadership, proving that influence is not a moment but a movement. Her work reflects
discipline, innovation, and a deep commitment to improving the lives of individuals, families,
and communities throughout Mississippi. Her story reminds us that Economic empowerment is
leadership. Workforce development is community development And visionary women do not
wait for opportunity, they create it.

Urban City Podcast and Inspired Resources, LLC proudly recognize Mrs. Willie Jones as a true Architect of Impact, an
executive leader whose influence strengthens institutions, mobilizes communities, and builds generational legacy. In

From Marcy Projects to Mogul, Jay-Z Built a Blueprint for Black Ownership.

Thaddeus Myles here, family welcome back to Urban City’s Black Agenda, where we don’t just talk about success, we talk about how it was built. Today is Day 13, and we’re stepping into a story that proves something Black folks have always known: talent gets you in the door, but ownership keeps you in the building.

We’re talking about Jay-Z.

Before the billionaire headlines, before the art collections, before the Super Bowl deals and boardroom seats, Shawn Carter was a kid from the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn. Hustling to survive. Watching his environment. Learning the rules of a game that wasn’t designed for him to win.

And instead of letting that environment define him, he studied it. He observed it. And eventually, he flipped it.

Jay-Z came up in an era when record labels made money off Black artists while keeping them broke. They owned the masters. They controlled the marketing. They dictated the contracts. Jay saw that trap early and he refused to fall into it.

So he did something revolutionary.

He built his own label.

Roc-A-Fella Records wasn’t just a music company it was a declaration. Jay-Z, Damon Dash, and Kareem Biggs said, “If they won’t invest in us, we’ll invest in ourselves.” And that independence allowed Jay-Z to own his music, his image, and his future.

From there, his career exploded. Albums. Tours. Awards. Influence. But Jay never lost sight of the bigger picture: music was the engine, but ownership was the destination.

So he expanded.

Clothing line: Rocawear
Sports management: Roc Nation Sports
Streaming: Tidal
Alcohol brands. Art. Real estate. Tech investments. Film. Activism.

Every move was strategic.

Jay-Z wasn’t just stacking money he was stacking leverage.

And when he became hip-hop’s first billionaire, it wasn’t just about the number. It was about what that number represented: a Black man who owned his intellectual property, his companies, and his narrative.

He also used that power to speak truth.

He addressed mass incarceration. Police brutality. Economic inequality. And when the NFL tried to use Black culture without respecting Black people, Jay-Z stepped in not as a mascot, but as a partner forcing conversations about reform, equity, and representation at the highest levels of American sports.

Love him or criticize him, one thing is undeniable:
Jay-Z changed the rules.

He showed young Black artists that you don’t have to sign your soul for success.
He showed entrepreneurs that you don’t have to ask permission to build empires.
He showed the culture that hip-hop isn’t just music it’s an economic engine.

And that’s why Jay-Z matters beyond the charts.

Because he turned the mic into a master key.

So today, Day 13 of Urban City’s Black Agenda, we honor Jay-Z the Empire Builder who turned hip-hop into power and ownership into legacy.

I’m Thaddeus Myles, and you already know keep it locked to urbancitypodcast.com and the Urban City Podcast app all month long for Urban City Podcast’s Black Agenda, powered by 4AM Roastery at 4amroastery.com.

Key Takeaways:

Systemic barriers hinder Latin-X communities from easily building wealth through traditional means.

Income disparities often limit the ability to save and invest effectively.

Addressing these issues directly is essential for closing the wealth gap.

Navigating Financial Challenges for Latin-X Communities

You might think that working hard and saving diligently is the key to building wealth, but for Latin-X communities, it's not that simple. Systemic barriers like limited access to financial education, cultural biases, and a historical distrust in financial systems create significant roadblocks.

Plus, income disparities leave little room for savings or investments. Without tackling these issues head-on, hard work alone won't close the wealth gap. So, what steps can you take to overcome these challenges?

The Role of Generational Wealth in Financial Stability

When it comes to building a solid financial foundation, understanding and harnessing the power of generational wealth is essential. For African American entrepreneurs and professionals, wealth accumulation isn't just about working hard—it's about making informed financial choices. Generational wealth provides a financial head start through stock market investments, real estate, and family businesses. These assets contribute considerably to long-term stability and economic mobility within communities. By focusing on financial literacy, you can reveal opportunities that transcend socioeconomic barriers. Remember, education is pivotal—you'll find that higher educational attainment leads to better-paying jobs and access to wealth-building tools. Establishing intentional planning and sound management practices is key to ensuring that future generations can benefit from the foundation you're building today.
Overcoming Barriers to Financial Education and Market Access

Overcoming barriers to financial education and market access requires a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by the Latin-X community. Cultural barriers often hinder financial education, where language differences and unfamiliarity with American financial practices play significant roles. For example, only 38% of Hispanics correctly answer Personal Finance Index questions compared to 50% of the general U.S. population. This gap highlights a need for culturally adapted financial education. Schools must prioritize early financial literacy to empower Latino youth and break poverty cycles. Collaboration and advocacy are essential in elevating financial education's importance.

Distrust in financial systems

Community outreach programs

Empowering through education promotes economic growth.

Addressing Distrust and Income Disparities in Financial Systems

If you've ever felt a sense of wariness toward financial systems, you're not alone. Historical racism and negative experiences have left Latine communities distrustful of banks.

Structural barriers and high identification requirements for undocumented individuals exacerbate this issue. For financial inclusion to thrive, trust building is essential. By understanding these unique challenges, tailored policies can be developed to bridge gaps.

Income disparities also play a role, with Latine households having considerably fewer assets compared to white households.

This, coupled with income instability, limits savings and access to credit. Financial institutions need to lower fees and offer more inclusive services.

Conclusion

Cultivating Wealth: Beyond Hard Work

Picture yourself as a gardener holding a handful of seeds. These seeds represent your earnings, and the soil is the financial system you plant them in. For Latin-X communities, this soil has often been rocky, strewn with obstacles like limited educational opportunities and cultural biases. But imagine what happens when you enrich this soil with specialized knowledge and actively work to dismantle these systemic barriers. Your garden begins to thrive, and what once seemed impossible becomes a field of abundance. You're not just working hard; you're strategically cultivating a legacy that ensures future generations can reap the benefits of prosperity.

So, what's the takeaway? It's not just about saving or working hard; it's about equipping yourself with the right tools and knowledge to transform your financial landscape. This is your call to action: let's break down these barriers together and plant seeds for a wealthier future.

Key Takeaways:

Explore faster paths to financial freedom beyond traditional retirement timelines.

Utilize investment strategies and multiple income streams to accelerate wealth-building.

Master debt management tailored to individual financial goals.

Accelerate Your Wealth Journey

Did you know that waiting around 40 years for retirement might not be the only path to financial freedom? It’s time to shake up that old narrative and explore quicker, smarter ways to build wealth.

Imagine harnessing the power of investment strategies, creating multiple income streams, and mastering effective debt management—all tailored to your unique goals. Ready to transform your financial journey and live life on your own terms? Let’s plunge into these game-changing strategies together!

Setting Clear Financial Goals for Early Wealth Building

When you’re setting clear financial goals for early wealth building, you’re not just organizing your finances—you’re laying the groundwork for a future filled with opportunities and empowerment. Start by identifying your financial priorities. Is it creating an emergency fund or paying off that pesky credit card debt? Align these goals with your lifestyle and essential needs. Remember, financial stability is built through strategic budgeting and saving. Establish precise short-term objectives like saving for a home down payment while keeping long-term aspirations in sight. Recognize the power of the time value of money; the earlier you start, the more you benefit from compound interest. Diversify investments across various asset classes to mitigate risk and ensure steady growth.

Leveraging Investment Strategies for Accelerated Growth

You’ve set your financial goals and laid the foundation for a wealth-building journey that resonates with your aspirations. Now, it’s time to reveal wealth acceleration through investment diversification. By spreading your assets across high-growth stocks, real estate, and cryptocurrencies, you can maximize returns and minimize risks. Accept strategic risk management by evaluating market trends and adapting your portfolio to stay ahead. Here’s a snapshot of how to diversify effectively:

Asset Type

Strategy

Potential Outcome

Stocks

Focus on high-growth

Rapid wealth accumulation

Real Estate

Flipping or rentals

Substantial income

Cryptocurrencies

Digital assets investment

Accelerated wealth creation

This approach empowers you, nurturing economic growth and ensuring financial security for urban communities.

Creating Multiple Streams of Income for Financial Freedom

Imagine a life where your income isn’t tied to a single source, but instead flows from a diverse array of channels, each contributing to your financial freedom. By accepting passive income and side hustles, you open doors to financial stability and independence.

Diversifying your income sources—like a robust investment portfolio—reduces risk and shields you from financial instability. It empowers you to explore new avenues, test ventures, and build wealth without relying solely on one paycheck.

Whether through rental properties, online ventures, or consulting gigs, creating multiple streams of income provides flexibility and control over your financial destiny.

In an ever-changing economy, adopting this strategy is a powerful step toward economic growth and community empowerment.

Effective Debt Management and Risk Diversification Strategies

Creating multiple streams of income sets the stage for financial empowerment, but managing that wealth wisely is where true freedom lies.

To conquer debt, tackle it with debt prioritization strategies. List your debts from highest to lowest interest rate and focus on eliminating the one at the top. Make minimum payments on others, but throw all extra cash at the highest-interest debt.

Consider debt consolidation, and regularly adjust your plan as life shifts.

For investment diversification, expand your reach across various asset types like stocks, bonds, and real estate. Look beyond borders with international investments, and don’t forget to diversify by economic sector and maturity.

This approach reduces risks while boosting long-term growth potential, setting you on a path to enduring financial independence.

Conclusion

Unleash Your Wealth-Building Potential

Hey there, savvy future planner! Ready to escape the traditional retirement grind? Remember, “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” as you explore a mix of income streams and investment opportunities. By setting crystal-clear goals and embracing financial literacy, you’re not just amassing wealth—you’re crafting a legacy. As you navigate this exciting journey, don’t hesitate to lean on your community for support and motivation. Together, we’re redefining what success looks like and securing a prosperous future on our terms. Let’s keep pushing the envelope and make those dreams a reality!

America. The country loves Black culture but often tries to separate it from Black people.

The pattern repeats itself: Black innovation leads, the mainstream follows, and eventually, the originators get erased from their own creation.

But the beauty of urban culture is that it keeps evolving, keeps reinventing, and keeps reclaiming its power.

Money Moves: The Economy and the Hustle

If there’s one thing that defines American culture, it’s the hustle.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur building a business from the ground up, an artist trying to make it big, or a single parent juggling two jobs, the grind never stops.

But here’s where reality kicks in.

The American Dream—the idea that anyone can make it if they work hard enough—is not an equal playing field.

Generational wealth, redlining, wage gaps, and systemic barriers make it clear that some people have had a head start while others are still waiting at the starting line.

Still, communities of color have always found ways to build their own economies.

From Black Wall Street in Tulsa to modern-day urban business movements, the culture of self-sufficiency is strong.

Look at the rise of Black-owned banks, tech startups, and real estate investments.

The blueprint is there—it’s just about making sure more people have access to the tools to use it.

That’s why financial literacy is becoming a bigger conversation than ever. Ownership is power.

Real estate, stocks, entrepreneurship—whatever the path, the goal is the same: control over your own future.

As urban communities continue to push for economic growth, expect to see more businesses, more partnerships, and more wealth-building strategies that redefine what success looks like.

Politics and the Pulse of the People

America’s culture isn’t just shaped by entertainment and money—it’s deeply tied to politics.

In urban communities, politics isn’t just something you watch on the news. It’s personal.

When policies affect housing, education, healthcare, and policing, real people feel the impact every single day.

That’s why activism has always been a central part of American culture.

From the civil rights movement to today’s voter mobilization efforts, urban communities have always been on the front lines of change.

One of the biggest cultural shifts in recent years?

More people realize that their vote actually matters.

Gone are the days when young people ignored the ballot box.
