From Stand-Up to Startup, Kevin Hart Built a Business Empire

Thaddeus Myles here, family welcome back to Urban City’s Black Agenda, where we don’t just clap for talent, we break down how it turned into power. Today is Day 17, and we’re spotlighting a man who didn’t let anyone box him into “just funny.” He built something that reaches far beyond the stage.

We’re talking about Kevin Hart.

Now most people see the jokes, the movies, the sold-out arenas, and the viral clips. But Kevin Hart’s real genius isn’t comedy it’s consistency and control.

Kevin came up in Philadelphia with a dream, a microphone, and a work ethic that bordered on obsessive. Early in his career, he bombed. A lot. Wrong audiences. Wrong jokes. Wrong timing. But instead of quitting, he studied. He rewrote. He refined. And slowly, he found his voice a voice that blended vulnerability, chaos, and humor in a way people could relate to.

Once he found that lane, he didn’t just drive in it he built highways.

Kevin Hart became one of the highest-grossing comedians in the world. But he didn’t stop at ticket sales. He launched HartBeat Productions, a company that creates films, television, and digital content giving him ownership of his own creative pipeline.

Then came Laugh Out Loud Network (LOL Network), a digital comedy platform that streams Black and diverse comedic voices. While Hollywood was still arguing about representation, Kevin built his own distribution channel.

That’s ownership.
That’s infrastructure.
That’s power.

And Kevin didn’t keep it all for himself. He used his platform to open doors for younger comedians, writers, and performers who didn’t have access to the mainstream. He created a ladder instead of just climbing it.

Now here’s the part most people don’t realize: Kevin Hart is also deep in tech and venture capital. He’s invested in startups, health companies, media platforms, and digital brands. He understands that entertainment is only one pillar equity is the foundation.

And after his life-threatening car accident in 2019, Kevin didn’t retreat. He came back focused, disciplined, and determined to squeeze every ounce of potential out of his second chance.

He launched Hart House, a plant-based fast-food chain focused on health and accessibility. Because even in business, Kevin thinks about community impact.

And yeah he’s human. He’s made mistakes. He’s taken hits. But what separates him is that he doesn’t fold he recalibrates.

Kevin Hart represents a new era of Black celebrity: one where we don’t just get famous we get free. Free from bad contracts. Free from dependency.
From Marcy Projects to Mogul, Jay-Z Built a Blueprint for Black Ownership.

Thaddeus Myles here, family welcome back to Urban City’s Black Agenda, where we don’t just talk about success, we talk about how it was built. Today is Day 13, and we’re stepping into a story that proves something Black folks have always known: talent gets you in the door, but ownership keeps you in the building.

We’re talking about Jay-Z.

Before the billionaire headlines, before the art collections, before the Super Bowl deals and boardroom seats, Shawn Carter was a kid from the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn. Hustling to survive. Watching his environment. Learning the rules of a game that wasn’t designed for him to win.

And instead of letting that environment define him, he studied it. He observed it. And eventually, he flipped it.

Jay-Z came up in an era when record labels made money off Black artists while keeping them broke. They owned the masters. They controlled the marketing. They dictated the contracts. Jay saw that trap early and he refused to fall into it.

So he did something revolutionary.

He built his own label.

Roc-A-Fella Records wasn’t just a music company it was a declaration. Jay-Z, Damon Dash, and Kareem Biggs said, “If they won’t invest in us, we’ll invest in ourselves.” And that independence allowed Jay-Z to own his music, his image, and his future.

From there, his career exploded. Albums. Tours. Awards. Influence. But Jay never lost sight of the bigger picture: music was the engine, but ownership was the destination.

So he expanded.

Clothing line: Rocawear
Sports management: Roc Nation Sports
Streaming: Tidal
Alcohol brands. Art. Real estate. Tech investments. Film. Activism.

Every move was strategic.

Jay-Z wasn’t just stacking money he was stacking leverage.

And when he became hip-hop’s first billionaire, it wasn’t just about the number. It was about what that number represented: a Black man who owned his intellectual property, his companies, and his narrative.

He also used that power to speak truth.

He addressed mass incarceration. Police brutality. Economic inequality. And when the NFL tried to use Black culture without respecting Black people, Jay-Z stepped in not as a mascot, but as a partner forcing conversations about reform, equity, and representation at the highest levels of American sports.

Love him or criticize him, one thing is undeniable:
Jay-Z changed the rules.

He showed young Black artists that you don’t have to sign your soul for success.
He showed entrepreneurs that you don’t have to ask permission to build empires.
He showed the culture that hip-hop isn’t just music it’s an economic engine.

And that’s why Jay-Z matters beyond the charts.

Because he turned the mic into a master key.

So today, Day 13 of Urban City’s Black Agenda, we honor Jay-Z the Empire Builder who turned hip-hop into power and ownership into legacy.

I’m Thaddeus Myles, and you already know keep it locked to urbancitypodcast.com and the Urban City Podcast app all month long for Urban City Podcast’s Black Agenda, powered by 4AM Roastery at 4amroastery.com.

Leading the Revolution in Red Carpet Fashion

You’re stepping into a conversation where the dazzling world of awards and Black fashion collide in 2025. Black designers and icons like A$AP Rocky and Rihanna are not just participants but leaders on red carpets, setting new cultural standards.

Events like the Black Carpet Awards and the Ebony Power 100 Gala spotlight these changemakers.

Ready to explore how these celebrations are reshaping narratives and nurturing community empowerment? Let’s get into it.

Celebrating Black Sartorial Innovation at the Met Gala

If you’ve followed the Met Gala over the years, you’d know it’s not just about what stars are wearing; it’s about who’s crafting those jaw-dropping looks.

In 2025, Black designers took center stage, showcasing tailoring techniques that weave cultural heritage into fashion. With a theme of “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” the gala celebrated Black dandyism as resistance and identity. Designers integrated community engagement and historical influences into their ensembles, highlighting the importance of cultural preservation in the fashion industry. Their work exemplifies how urban politics and social engagement can influence fashion narratives.

Designers like Adebayo Oke-Lawal impressed us with a custom red ensemble for actor Brian Tyree Henry, embodying Nigerian influences.

Likewise, Ugo Mozie wowed with designs that reflected rich cultural narratives. Nicholas Daley, a Scottish-Jamaican designer, also made a significant impact dressing musician Leon Bridges in an oversized striped suit that emphasized cultural representation at the event.

As you witness these creations, you see a powerful display of craftsmanship meeting cultural pride, setting new standards in representation and influencing future fashion tales forever.

Diversity on Display at the Black Carpet Awards

When you catch wind of the Black Carpet Awards, you’re in for more than just a red carpet spectacle—it’s a powerful celebration of diversity in the heart of Milan.

Hosted by the Afro Fashion Association, this event leverages representation strategies to showcase inclusive practices within fashion.

It’s about more than appearances; it’s about action and change. Here are three standout aspects:

Celebration of Change Leaders: Honoring those advancing equity and transforming cultural narratives in fashion and beyond.

Partnerships with Educational Institutions: Collaborations with places like Istituto Marangoni Milano encourage emerging African design talent.

Cross-Cultural Initiatives: Programs like LABA Douala Academy promote sustained creativity and diversification.

Incorporating spiritual practices like mindfulness can foster inner peace and healing, enhancing the creativity and resilience of those participating in such transformative events.

These elements underscore a shift from token diversity to meaningful inclusivity, empowering future leaders in the industry.

The Power of Media and Strategic Amplification

Although the world of fashion often appears focused on aesthetics, it’s the power of media and strategic amplification that propels Black fashion narratives to the forefront.

Media visibility through platforms like FashionGHANA and DN-AFRICA.COM drives the conversation, highlighting Black designers and creatives. Amplification strategies are essential; events like the Black Carpet Awards 2025 strategically coincide with Milan Fashion Week Women’s, boosting media coverage.

Your role as an informed supporter involves recognizing and sharing these narratives. The Afro Fashion Association excels in using digital platforms and social media to spread the word, ensuring that Black fashion gets its much-deserved spotlight.

Honoring Pioneers at the Ebony Power 100 Gala

As the doors swung open to the 2025 EBONY Power 100 Gala, you could feel the electric energy crackling through the air.

It was a momentous night celebrating cultural legacy and fashion excellence. Honoring pioneers like supermodel Iman and historian Lonnie G. Bunch, the event underscored EBONY’s commitment to:

Preserving Black legacy by recognizing multi-generational achievements across sectors such as STEM and activism.

Breaking barriers in representation, showcasing diverse talents that amplify the Black experience globally.

Inspiring new narratives, emphasizing trailblazers who redefine cultural leadership and influence.

Shaping Cultural Narratives Through Black Fashion Icons and Designers

Black fashion icons and designers aren’t just setting trends—they’re rewriting the book on cultural narratives. Icons like A$AP Rocky and Rihanna blend cultural aesthetics with mainstream fashion, promoting inclusivity. Meanwhile, Black designers like Christopher John Rogers and Sergio Hudson infuse these narratives into prestigious events like the Met Gala. You’re witnessing a movement where streetwear meets luxury, and traditional African motifs dance with modern tailoring.

Here’s a glimpse:

Key Takeaways

White American culture has a significant influence on global trends, impacting various aspects of daily life worldwide.

The reach of American culture highlights the importance of ensuring diverse voices are represented and heard in global narratives.

Understanding the global influence of American culture allows communities to assess their own cultural contributions and presence.

The Global Reach of American Culture

Have you ever stopped to think about how much white American culture shapes the world? From the music you listen to and the movies you watch, to the tech gadgets you use every day, it all starts here. It's incredible how something that begins in the U.S. can ripple across the globe.

But what does that mean for our communities?

How can we make sure our voices are also heard? Let's discover the impact together.

Cultural Influence and Global Media

When you think about cultural influence and global media, the impact of US pop culture is hard to miss. Music, films, and shows from the US are everywhere, marking the nation as a beacon of freedom and dreams. This media presence sets a stage for cultural exchange, inviting others to learn and share ideas. Although American culture is predominantly seen through a white lens overseas, Black, Latinx, Asian, and Indigenous communities within the U.S. heavily shape its cultural landscape. White perspectives tend to dominate media portrayals, often resulting in the underrepresentation of racial and ethnic minorities which influences societal norms globally. Yet, the spotlight also highlights underrepresentation, with African-American and Latino voices often missing or misrepresented. You'll find that media representation affects how we see each other. Despite Latinos comprising nearly 20% of the U.S. population, political representation remains disproportionately low, highlighting the need for more inclusive storytelling across media platforms. With increasing calls for broader inclusion, understanding grows, connecting diverse cultures worldwide. While this exchange illuminates diversity, there's also concern about cultural identities being overshadowed. Your voice matters; it shapes and enriches this evolving narrative.

Economic Impact on International Markets

Plunge right into the fascinating world of economics and you'll find White American culture playing a big role in shaping global markets. Trade agreements crafted with U.S. interests, like NAFTA, ripple through international markets, affecting many. The dominance of white families in U.S. stock ownership brings up wealth disparities not just stateside but globally, as these stock market trends have far-reaching effects. Empowering and transforming communities can play a vital role in addressing these global disparities. Here's how some key factors stack up:

Aspect

Impact

Trade Agreements

Financial Innovations

Lead global finance trends

You're in a world where American economics guide markets, spurring both opportunity and inequality.

Political Ideologies and Governance

Imagine traversing the political terrain where white American culture acts like a compass, often pointing towards ideologies that shape both local and global dynamics.

You're steering through a setting influenced by white identity politics, where fears of losing power play a significant role. Here, ideologies may protect white privilege, sometimes at the expense of democratic values and systemic inequalities.

Political figures often appeal to past greatness, leveraging resentment to gain support. Governance structures perpetuate these dynamics, reflecting power imbalances and excluding minority voices.

Policies may enhance white dominance, affecting global political movements. Across the world, these ideologies influence movements and policies, often echoing American trends.

As you seek to understand, recognize how these forces impact governance and advocate for systemic change.

Technological Advancements and Innovation

Stepping from the domain of political ideologies, you find yourself in the bustling hub of technological advancements and innovation, where the United States stands as a driving force. You're witnessing a world shaped by digital innovation and technological collaboration. U.S. companies lead globally in creating disruptive technologies like AI and quantum computing. This spirit of innovation supports over 9.3 million American jobs, growing twice as fast as other sectors. The tech industry contributes nearly $2 trillion to the U.S. economy. Internationally, the U.S. ranks high but faces competition from countries like China. Investments in digital infrastructure, like broadband and 5G, support the U.S.'s ongoing leadership.

Conclusion

Embracing Diverse Narratives

You've seen it unfold—White American culture shaping global trends in fashion, media, and even ideology. Yet ironically, as it dominates the global stage, it often overshadows the rich, diverse voices at home. The good news? You have an opportunity. Dive deep into your unique stories, businesses, and ideas. Navigate this cultural landscape and let your narrative shine. Remember, diverse voices aren't just waiting in the wings; they're ready to take center stage. So, let's celebrate and amplify these voices, because the world is ready to listen.
