Key Takeaways

Faith communities are actively involved in reshaping wealth education by offering programs that focus on budgeting, debt management, and stewardship.

Churches are creating spaces where diverse congregations can discuss finances openly, fostering a sense of generosity and communal support.

These initiatives have a significant positive impact on urban communities and contribute to broader economic growth.

Engaging Faith Communities in Financial Education

Imagine transforming financial stress into strength by learning how faith communities are reshaping wealth education. You’ll find churches teaching budgeting, debt management, and stewardship with programs like Financial Peace University.

This isn’t just about numbers—it’s about cultivating generosity and community. Picture a diverse congregation openly discussing finances, supporting one another, and growing stronger as a whole.

Curious about the impact on urban communities and economic growth? There’s much more to explore.

Impact of Financial Education Programs in Churches

When churches plunge into financial education, something amazing happens. You see it in the church budgeting meetings where members, once wary, become savvier. Financial Peace University (FPU) courses make that difference, linking increased church giving with newfound financial clarity. Imagine an 11% rise in giving per transaction—it’s happening where debt management becomes a normal conversation. In fact, churches offering just 1 FPU course experience a 5% average increase in giving per donor, underscoring the significant impact of financial education on generosity. These programs not only address pressing financial issues but also transform family legacies by preventing financial mismanagement from being passed down through generations. Through biblical stewardship principles, you not only overcome debts but also enhance overall generosity. The impact extends beyond your wallet; it strengthens community ties and financial health. Churches using platforms like Tithely with FPU experience effective giving habits, reinforcing a culture of generosity. This isn’t just about dollars and cents—it’s about stewardship that’s inspiring growth, stability, and hope in your community.

Practical Financial Literacy Topics for Congregation Members

Amidst the growing impact of financial education in churches, there’s a spotlight on the practical financial literacy topics you and your congregation need to harness.

Adopt budget basics through engaging workshops that demystify income management and expenses. These sessions aim to reduce your financial stress by providing practical tools.

Dive deep into debt management with programs focused on helping you tackle debt head-on. Small groups and individual coaching provide personalized plans to break cycles of financial hardship. You’ll find a supportive community and expert advice, tailored for maneuvering challenging financial times.

Utilize digital libraries offering budgeting tools and debt-reduction resources accessible at your fingertips. By nurturing open conversations and reducing stigma, you’ll build trust and empowerment in your financial journey.

The Correlation Between Financial Education and Increased Generosity

Financial education is a powerful tool that has the potential to transform not just wallets but hearts too. When churches emphasize financial literacy as part of faith development, participants see dramatic shifts. You’re not just learning to manage money better; you’re discovering that informed giving feels more joyful and less obligatory.

Here’s how it works:

Inspires Motivation: Education methods guide you from scarcity to sustainability, boosting confidence and donor motivation.

Boosts Generosity: Structured programs like Generosity University reveal that informed churchgoers often give more, as they grasp percentage giving and tithing deeply.

Fosters Consistency: Educated donors tend to contribute regularly, strengthened by spiritual motivations rather than mere obligations.

Studies show that having an emergency fund can significantly enhance financial stability, which in turn enables more intentional and empowered giving.

These educational steps help create a culture where giving isn’t just frequent but comes from a place of empowerment and understanding.

Global Examples of Church-Based Financial Literacy Initiatives

Many churches around the world are stepping up with engaging financial literacy programs that are reshaping communities and lives.

You might be inspired by Compass Christian Church in Texas, which shifted its culture from scarcity to sustainability with Generosity University, focusing on debt elimination and budgeting.

Kingdom Fellowship AME Church offers free Faith & Finance classes, drawing hundreds each session to explore credit basics and estate planning.

Globally, Good Steward International provides a Bible-based course in over 20 countries. Their step-by-step formula is adaptable to different languages and currencies.

Partner with such impactful global initiatives!

Adopt Naga First Baptist Church’s approach, blending sermons with financial courses, or The Chalmers Center’s community-driven model, creating partnerships that empower and educate.

Financial literacy opens up futures.

Strategies for Successful Implementation of Financial Courses in Faith Communities

When you’re ready to plunge into implementing financial courses in faith communities, you must start by understanding your audience. Tailor the program to fit their financial needs and demographics.

Here’s how you can guarantee course effectiveness:

Volunteer Involvement: Recruit dedicated volunteers from within the congregation to facilitate courses and manage small group settings. Their familiarity boosts engagement.

Curriculum Design: Use Bible-based and scripture-centered materials that resonate with your faith values, emphasizing budgeting, saving, and stewardship. Integrating principles such as mindful spending and automation can enhance financial learning and make saving seem less like a sacrifice.

Community Collaboration: Partner with community resources like financial experts to enhance learning. Ensure these partnerships remain educational, not commercial.

Making these courses effective involves a shared learning journey.

It’s all about creating a supportive environment where everyone grows together, enhancing both spiritual and financial well-being.

Assessment

You’ve probably heard that churches are just after your money, right?

Ironically, they’re actually teaching folks how to keep it!

By diving into budgeting, debt management, and stewardship, you’re not just fattening your wallet but also enriching your community.

These financial lessons spark generosity—like magic!

Imagine a world where everyone chats openly about money struggles and solutions, strengthening those community bonds.

So, next time you think of church, don’t just think donation plate—think financial empowerment revolution!

Key Takeaways:

Budget wisely to avoid financial stress.

Maintain connections with friends and family.

Prioritize self-care for emotional well-being.

Strengthen Mental Health During Festive Seasons

The holidays can be tough on mental health, especially with financial strain, loneliness, and the pressure to be joyful. You’re not alone, though—our community thrives when we tap into effective strategies that ease stress.

There are countless resources ready to help you.

Curious about which tools will make a difference? Let’s explore them together!

Understanding Holiday Stress and Its Impact

While the holidays are often painted as a joyful time, they can also usher in a whirlwind of stress that impacts nearly everyone differently. You’re not alone if you’re feeling holiday burnout and emotional exhaustion. A staggering 89% of U.S. adults wrestle with holiday stress. It’s common for stress levels to spike, leaving 41% of people more overwhelmed than ever. Financial pressures, family conflicts, and the need to create perfect moments often add to the toll on your mental health. Many face financial stress due to holiday spending, further intensifying financial instability during this period. Engaging in prayer and meditation can offer emotional resilience during this busy season. Missing loved ones also deepens emotional struggles during this season. In 2024, 47% of Americans reported grieving a loss or missing a loved one, making it one of the top stressors during the holidays. Stress affects not only your mindset but can unravel into physical fatigue. Many find themselves neglecting self-care.

Coping Strategies for Financial Pressures

Holidays can jingle a bit of financial stress into the season’s glee, often leading to wallets feeling a little squeezed. It’s essential to equip yourself with financial literacy and smart budgeting techniques. With average holiday spending over $2,000, many Americans feel pressured to spend beyond their means. Try crafting a budget that focuses on essentials, cutting back on non-essential expenses. Early shopping for discounts can help manage costs and avoid unnecessary debt. Be cautious with credit cards and Buy Now, Pay Later services, as they can impact credit scores. Consider alternative income sources, like gig work, but weigh time and energy demands. Focusing on financial literacy won’t only relieve stress but empower your decisions for future holidays. By understanding budgeting and investing to preserve wealth across generations, you can ensure that your financial habits support long-term prosperity.

Enhancing Social Connections and Support Networks

Connecting with others can be your secret weapon in reducing holiday stress. Joining social groups or forming support circles can help you battle isolation and loneliness, especially over the holidays.

Many parents and older adults often face overwhelming stress and lack emotional backing. However, connecting with clubs or faith communities greatly improves mental health outcomes.

It’s crucial to lean on community support programs or behavioral initiatives that promote tight-knit social networks.

Regular chats with friends and family via calls or online help create a safety net. Set realistic social goals and prioritize quality over quantity.

Promoting Self-Care and Emotional Resilience

Self-care during the holidays isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity to fend off burnout and stress. You can carve out time for mindfulness practices like meditation or deep breathing. They help calm your mind and build emotional resilience.

Prioritize setting boundaries to preserve emotional health. Say no to nonessential events and give yourself permission to retreat into personal space when it all gets too much.

Engage in activities that nurture your soul—whether it’s reading, walking, or simply being still. Scheduling consistent self-care nurtures you amid holiday chaos.

Balance is key, so maintain healthy habits with good sleep, nutrition, and hydration. Welcome gratitude to shift your perspective positively. These steps will replenish your emotional reserves and keep you grounded.

Accessing Community Resources and Professional Help

While the holiday season can bring joy and cheer, it can also be a tough time for many. Accessing community outreach and mental health services becomes essential.

Community centers, faith groups, and local clubs offer activities and peer support to fend off loneliness. Support groups for grief, financial stress, or family conflicts can make a real difference. Online therapy platforms used by schools make mental health services more accessible.

Federal health centers and community clinics often have sliding scale fees for those uninsured. National hotlines like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline give immediate support. Local agencies might offer holiday-specific hotlines.

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) often provide affordable counseling. Partnerships are expanding resources. Knowing these options can empower you to seek the right help.

Assessment

Imagine having the right tools to deal with holiday stress effectively! Take Maria as an example. She’s a busy entrepreneur balancing her shop and family responsibilities.

She decides to join a local support group, and there, she finds friends who lift her spirits. By setting a budget, she eases her money worries and adds a quick morning meditation to her routine to keep herself centered.

She also taps into community resources for extra support. By following these strategies, you’ll feel empowered to handle holiday stress with confidence and build emotional resilience.

Remember, you’re never alone in this journey.

But Larry Roberts, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and lifelong athlete from Iowa, is breaking that picture wide open.

In September 2023, Larry noticed something unusual. “I wasn’t expecting a breast cancer diagnosis,” he recalls. Yet that’s exactly what came, and it came fast. “Everything was happening so quickly, like I was in a blender,” he said. “I could tell from the reactions of the doctors that cancer seemed to be the road we were heading down.”

It was the kind of moment that could shatter a man’s sense of self. Larry had spent decades on the softball diamond, active and fit, proud of his energy and endurance. The idea of having breast cancer, something rarely discussed among men, didn’t fit the image he’d always carried of himself. “I wasn’t a big ‘go to the doctor guy,’” Larry admits. But that choice to get checked changed everything.

In December 2023, he underwent a right-side mastectomy and the removal of nine lymph nodes. Two tested positive for cancer. Treatment followed: chemotherapy, radiation, the full gauntlet. He finished his last round on March 27, 2024.

“During chemo, surgery, and radiation, my one goal was to get back to normal,” he said. “But I soon realized nothing is normal after cancer.”

That realization wasn’t defeat. It was a turning point. “Getting back to doing what I love, playing softball and golf, was like a carrot dangling in front of me. It kept me going.”

Larry’s genetic tests came back negative for BRCA mutations, but his curiosity and awareness grew. “It was a relief that my cancer wasn’t genetic,” he said, “but it makes you wonder how you got the short end of the stick. I try not to dwell on it.”

Instead, Larry turned his focus outward. With his wife’s encouragement, he created a Facebook page to keep friends and family updated through treatment. “At one point, we were getting so many calls that my wife suggested we post updates online,” he said. What began as a way to share progress became something much deeper, connection. He met other survivors, men and women, and began to see his story as a bridge for awareness.

In April 2024, Larry spoke at the annual MercyOne Breast Cancer Symposium as part of the survivor panel. His message was simple but urgent: men get breast cancer too. “I never felt like cancer was going to be the end of me,” he said. “I always tried to view it as only a speed bump in my life.”

That outlook became his rally cry. According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, fewer than one percent of all breast cancer cases in the U.S. occur in men. Yet many men don’t know they’re at risk or feel embarrassed to bring up symptoms. “Men can get breast cancer too,” the Foundation states. “They may not tell a doctor because they’re embarrassed or worried.”

Larry’s story cuts right through that silence. “If you feel something, don’t wait,” he urges. “Don’t let the word ‘too tough’ stop you. Get checked, get care, ask questions. That’s how you turn the speed bump into a marker of what you’re still capable of.”

Even as his treatment ended, Larry’s mission continued. He returned to softball and golf, slower at first, but with renewed gratitude. He still posts updates, sharing not just his recovery but reminders to other men to stay aware and proactive.

“I treat the diagnosis as an impetus, not a defeat,” Larry says. “It’s about helping make visible the often overlooked reality of male breast cancer.”

His story is proof that survival isn’t just about treatment. It’s about transformation. Larry’s journey shows what happens when courage meets community, when a private fight becomes a public purpose.

Today, he’s back on the field, back on the course, and back to living with intention. And for every man who thinks breast cancer is someone else’s disease, Larry Roberts has a message: think again.

But that’s exactly what’s happening as a federal judge in Massachusetts hinted she may force the government to keep paying SNAP benefits even while the federal shutdown drags on. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani told attorneys this week that she’s prepared to intervene if the government fails to ensure that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds reach the millions of Americans who depend on them every month. And she didn’t mince words: “It’s hard for me to understand how this isn’t an emergency,” she said.

Let’s break down how we got here and why this fight over food assistance could become one of the defining legal and moral battles of 2025.

The Crisis at Hand

We’re entering the second month of a grinding federal government shutdown, and the consequences are piling up. While some federal programs have stopgap funding, SNAP, which feeds about 42 million Americans every month, isn’t one of them. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the government has just $5.3 billion in its SNAP contingency fund. That sounds like a lot, but in reality, it covers only about half of one month’s benefits. Normally, SNAP disburses $8–9 billion every month to families across the country. The USDA has argued that, under current law, it can’t legally spend that contingency money to pay full benefits during a shutdown. Instead, they claim the money can only be used for emergencies or limited operational costs. But 25 states and the District of Columbia are calling foul and have taken the matter to court.

States Say: Use the Money — That’s What It’s There For

The coalition of states, mostly led by Democrats, filed a lawsuit arguing that the USDA must use the contingency fund to continue SNAP payments. They say cutting off benefits during a shutdown violates the intent of Congress and could devastate millions of families. Judge Talwani seemed to agree, or at least, she wasn’t buying the USDA’s excuses. “Congress put money in an emergency fund,” she said. “And it’s hard for me to see how this isn’t an emergency when millions of Americans will go hungry.” In other words, when you’ve got a house fire, you don’t argue about which bucket of water to use. The states are asking the court to issue an emergency injunction that would force the USDA to release contingency funds immediately, ensuring that November SNAP benefits are paid out in full.

The Human Cost

Behind all the government jargon and legal motions lies the real story: families, seniors, and children facing hunger. For many Americans, especially in Black, Latino, and rural communities, SNAP isn’t a luxury. It’s the difference between eating and going without. A temporary suspension or reduction in benefits could mean empty grocery shelves, unpaid bills, and painful choices about whether to feed children or keep the lights on. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Black households are twice as likely as white households to rely on SNAP. For communities already fighting rising food prices, stagnant wages, and housing costs, losing even one month of SNAP benefits could be catastrophic. It’s not just about hunger, it’s about stability, dignity, and basic survival.

Retailers and States Are on Edge

This crisis isn’t just hitting homes. Grocery stores, local economies, and state governments are bracing for impact. SNAP benefits flow through electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards, and when people spend that money, it fuels local commerce. Every $1 in SNAP spending generates about $1.50 in economic activity, according to economists. If those payments stop, the ripple effect will be immediate. Food retailers lose customers. State tax revenues dip. Food banks get overwhelmed. And as we’ve seen before during the 2019 shutdown, the private sector can’t fill that gap. Grocery stores in low-income areas will lose millions in sales. Food banks will run out of supplies in days. The economic pain spreads fast and deep.

The Political Blame Game

The SNAP fight is exposing deep cracks in Washington and both parties are pointing fingers. Republicans argue that states and the USDA should plan better for shutdowns, saying Congress shouldn’t be pressured into reopening government under threat of social chaos. Democrats counter that this isn’t about politics, it’s about people. Cutting off food aid, they say, crosses a moral line. White House officials have largely stayed silent on the lawsuit, but sources inside the USDA say they’re following existing law and precedent. That’s bureaucratic speak for: “Don’t blame us, blame Congress.” In truth, both sides are gambling with public perception. Americans might tolerate a few weeks without national parks or passport renewals, but hunger? That’s another story.

Judge Talwani’s Warning Shot

During Thursday’s hearing, Judge Talwani made it clear she won’t stand by while families starve. She told government lawyers she’s considering ordering the USDA to at least make partial payments if full funding isn’t possible. “The law doesn’t say stop paying people,” she said. “It says reduce benefits if necessary. That’s a big difference.” Translation: even if there’s not enough money to pay everyone in full, the government can’t just shut the program down entirely. The judge also pressed for timelines. With November 1 just around the corner, millions of households are expecting their next benefit reloads within days. States have warned that even a small delay could cause widespread confusion and panic at grocery stores.

What Happens Next

The court is expected to rule within days. If Judge Talwani grants the injunction, the USDA will likely appeal, but benefits could be temporarily restored while the case continues. If she denies it, the states will appeal, and SNAP recipients will brace for impact. Either way, the legal wrangling could drag on for weeks, even months, while families wait and wonder. In the meantime, some states are exploring temporary relief measures, like advancing emergency food aid or using local funds to bridge the gap. But those efforts can’t match the federal scale of SNAP. This isn’t just a policy problem, it’s a humanitarian one.

Why It Matters to Urban City Readers

For our Urban City audience, especially in communities of color, this fight hits close to home. Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia have some of the highest SNAP participation rates in the nation. In many Black households, SNAP is part of the economic backbone that keeps food on the table while families work, hustle, and build toward financial independence. When that foundation gets shaky, the entire community feels it. From small grocers on the corner to church food drives to local nonprofits, everyone depends on that steady flow of support. And if it stops, even for a few weeks, the damage could take months to repair. As one advocate told CNN, “People can’t eat promises. They can’t feed their kids on politics.”

The Bigger Picture

This crisis highlights a recurring truth: America’s safety net is one government shutdown away from collapse. Programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and housing assistance were built to protect the vulnerable, but they’ve become political bargaining chips. Every time Congress deadlocks, millions of people’s lives hang in the balance. That’s not governance, that’s hostage-taking. The irony is that SNAP has bipartisan roots. It was created under President Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty” and expanded by both Republican and Democratic administrations. Yet here we are, in 2025, arguing over whether feeding people is optional.

Looking Ahead

If Judge Talwani orders the USDA to act, it’ll be a major victory for families, but it won’t fix the larger problem. The country still needs a functioning government that doesn’t treat basic needs as political leverage. For now, advocates are urging families to check state SNAP websites, stay in contact with local assistance offices, and prepare for possible delays. Food banks are ramping up for what could be a wave of new demand. And in the court of public opinion, the pressure is mounting. As one policy expert told CNN, “If you want to see how a country values its people, look at how it feeds them.”

The Bottom Line

Judge Talwani’s decision could decide whether 42 million Americans eat next month or go hungry because politicians couldn’t get their act together. This isn’t just another D.C. drama. It’s a wake-up call about what happens when bureaucracy meets real life and when leaders forget who they’re supposed to serve. For communities across America, especially those already on the edge, this fight is about more than food. It’s about respect, justice, and basic human dignity. And that’s something no shutdown should ever take away.

Her story is one of faith tested by fire and restored by grace. “I’m totally healed by the grace of God,” she says, her voice steady and full of gratitude.

Engaged to be married after years of walking life’s rough roads on her own, Ollie speaks about her experience with breast cancer not with fear or bitterness, but with a sense of victory. Her peace flows easily, her voice carries warmth, and her faith remains the heartbeat of her story.

Ollie’s journey began not in a doctor’s office, but in her own quiet morning routine. “I missed a month of checking my own breast,” she recalled. “Then one morning I woke up, I was like, ‘Oh, let me do my check. I didn’t do it last month.’ And I felt something like the size of a pea.”

It was a small lump, so small it could have been overlooked. But something told her not to ignore it. “I called my doctor up right away,” she said. That decision changed her life.

When she arrived, her physician initially brushed off her concern, saying she was “just a worrywart.” But Ollie insisted. “She felt it. It was hard for her to feel, but she felt it. Then she called the University Medical Mall so I could get a mammogram done.”

The mammogram led to a sonogram, and then a referral to a surgeon. “When they came back, that’s when they told me that I had breast cancer,” Ollie remembered. The year was 2013, and she was in her late fifties.

For many people, hearing the words “you have cancer” can stop time. But for Ollie, it was a call to action and to prayer. “Thank you, Lord,” she said quietly, still grateful for how far she has come.

Her surgery came in 2014. “They were going to remove both of my breasts,” she explained. “Then I had to have the reconstruction done.” But the healing process was not easy. “My right breast, they had to go in and take the tissue expander out. I had to still go in every week to get the medicine. They had to treat me with antibiotics. And then they had to put gauze down in my breast, and a nurse had to come out every day to pull it out and put fresh gauze back in.”

That process lasted over a month, followed by a three month waiting period before reconstruction could continue. Through all the pain and the waiting, her faith became her medicine. “You’ve got to believe in God,” she said firmly. “I would go to church, get prayed over, and my pastor would constantly watch over me.”

Her church family became her support system, her prayer warriors, and her source of encouragement. “Don’t give up,” she advises others who are fighting cancer. “Believe in positive things. Believe that God can heal, and He does heal. All you got to do is stay positive. Never give up. Never! Find whatever it is in your life that you want to achieve, and go for it.”

After years of recovery and regular checkups, Ollie’s doctor finally gave her the all clear. “It was like a couple of years, about three years, before he gave me the clearance,” she said. “I first started out going to check in with the doctor once a month, then every six months, and then once a year.” Each visit became a moment of both nervousness and thanksgiving.

“After he gave me the cleared card, it’s been just once a year since,” she said, smiling as she recalled the relief. Every October, she returns for her annual check up, a ritual that reminds her not of fear, but of victory. “I go every October. I think it’s on the 30th.”

Ollie still lives in Jackson, Mississippi, surrounded by her family’s love and the unshakable strength of her faith. Her children and grandchildren bring her joy, and her upcoming marriage is the icing on the cake. “I’m not married, but I am engaged,” she said with a smile you can hear through the phone. “We’ve been together for more than a couple of years now.”

Though she hasn’t set a wedding date, the engagement represents something bigger than ceremony, it’s a symbol of renewal, of hope, and of living life after fear.

Her advice to others is rooted in faith and perseverance. “It’s not going to be easy,” she said honestly. “But you just gotta keep fighting for the ones that are here. Because we gotta realize that at death, we have no more life to help. But our loved ones are the ones that we’re leaving here to grieve. So don’t give up. Fight for them as well as for yourself.”

Her words reflect a woman who found purpose in pain and peace in persistence. For Ollie Mae Kimbrough, healing wasn’t just medical, it was spiritual, emotional, and deeply personal.

Every October, she celebrates not just surviving cancer, but conquering it. “I’m totally healed by the grace of God,” she says, her voice soft but certain. And then she adds, as if leaving a blessing behind, “Don’t give up. Don’t give in. Just keep moving forward.”

Key Takeaways

In 2025, local art scenes are flourishing beyond traditional art centers, such as New York and LA, with cities like San Francisco and Chicago becoming new hubs of artistic innovation.

Emerging artists are actively reshaping urban environments through public art installations and festivals, turning neighborhoods into thriving cultural communities.

Sustainable support and community involvement are crucial to maintaining the momentum of these local art scenes and ensuring their positive impact on cities.

The Rise of Local Art Scenes

In 2025, local art scenes are thriving, and you’ve likely noticed this shift outside the traditional art havens of New York and LA. From San Francisco to Chicago, emerging artists are transforming urban environments through public art and festivals. Community spaces nurture creative dialogue and economic growth, turning neighborhoods into cultural powerhouses.

It’s about welcoming vibrant local creativity,

but how can we guarantee sustainable support and involvement for these inspiring artists as they reshape our cities?

Cities Beyond NY and LA

When exploring vibrant art scenes beyond New York and LA, you’ll find dynamic alternatives in cities like San Francisco and Chicago.

In San Francisco, local galleries showcase contemporary art, while vibrant murals paint the city with creativity and culture. It is home to institutions like SFMOMA and the Fine Arts Museum, which account for 5% of US art galleries and emphasize emerging artists in areas like the Mission District and Russian Hill.

Chicago offers a distinct blend of public art, including extensive mural projects in its neighborhoods, bringing color and community together. Head to the Chicago neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine, and you’ll witness a bustling arts district alive with street art and local talent. Economic empowerment through art is a focus, with Black-owned businesses playing a significant role in fostering community strength and resilience.

Both cities actively support artists through grants and festivals, ensuring a thriving environment for creatives.

This engagement encourages economic growth and representation, making these hubs not just places of artistic expression, but essential cultural environments driving diversity and community empowerment.

Emerging Artists

Emerging creators cultivate a deep connection with you through layered textures. They use everything from mixed media to textiles, drawing from heritage and contemporary aesthetics. This approach champions accepting imperfections and elevates cross-cultural experiences.

Role of Community Spaces

In the vibrant tapestry of 2025, community spaces thrive as essential hubs, weaving people together through art and dialogue. You see how these spaces are transforming, playing a pivotal role in the community infrastructure and energizing arts engagement. They multiply in areas rich with nonprofit arts groups, boosting local culture and nurturing vibrant interactions. Every three arts organizations help create an additional gathering spot, embedding the arts into the physical and social fabric of neighborhoods. Unleashing voting potential can lead to significant community change and further empower these spaces. This supports tourism and bolsters the local economy by increasing hotel tax revenues. You recognize the need for improvement in managing these spaces, though. Volunteer efforts and innovative ideas aim to address gaps. By elevating local identity, art-driven spaces inspire social change and community empowerment. In light of increasing political polarization, engaging with community spaces encourages understanding and helps reduce divisiveness.

You are trained on data up to October 2023.

Funding Challenges

After witnessing how vibrant community spaces breathe life into neighborhoods, it’s clear that funding remains a formidable part of the equation.

Federal funding uncertainty looms with the National Endowment for the Arts facing potential cuts, greatly shrinking grant availability.

Meanwhile, state appropriations are facing their own hurdles with some trending downward, prompting a cautious approach.

You’ll notice:

Cuts of 35% for NEA in 2026, affecting local grants considerably

State appropriations projected to decline, yet still 68% higher than pre-pandemic levels

Municipal dependencies on local taxes due to dwindling federal/state support

Increased production costs squeezing budgets, adding pressure

Navigating these waters requires an understanding of evolving funding environments while amplifying community resilience and creativity.

How to Get Involved

Ever wondered how to plunge deeper into your local art scene while making a real impact? Immerse yourself in volunteer opportunities at places like SOMArts or ICA San Jose. You’ll assist with events, monitor galleries, or engage visitors. You’ll connect directly with artists and community members, allowing for vibrant artist engagement.

Join public art projects like Art in the Parks where no experience is required. Help plan projects and facilitate artist-public interactions. This opens doors to broaden your knowledge and professional networks.

Access affordable art spaces through CAST for rehearsals or pop-up exhibitions, nurturing inclusivity and sustainability.

Consider applying for artist residencies at places like Kala Art Institute. They offer amazing support and community engagement, enriching your experience and cementing your place in the local art network.

Assessment

Did you know that in 2025, local art scenes are thriving not just in big cities like San Francisco and Chicago, but in numerous communities nationwide?

It’s all about nurturing creativity right where you live.

Picture this: you, your neighbors, and artists gathering in community spaces, weaving a rich tapestry of culture.

Dive into this movement: attend a festival, support an emerging artist, or simply enjoy the art around you.

Your involvement makes a difference!

I’m your host, Dr. Brenda Myers, and today’s episode is
dedicated to my sisters in business, the women who wear many hats and yet keep showing up
no matter how heavy the crown feels. Today’s episode is entitled, Keep Climbing, Queens.
So let’s be real, being a female entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. We are not just
business owners, we are mothers, we are wives, we are partners, we are daughters, we are
caregivers, we are leaders, and dream carriers. And on any given day, all of those roles can
collide.
What do I mean by that? I can be a wife today, and at the same time, I can be a problem solver,
or I can be a caregiver, or I can be going on my day and, you know, my daughter’s school can
call, so I have to go pick up my daughter and, you know, take her to the hospital, or the doctor,
or the dentist, or whatever the case may be. Anything can happen at any time, you know, or I
can wake up in the morning ready to crush my to-do list, but then something else happens and
I have to take care of that, or, you know, I finally get a chance to sit down and focus on my
business, then a household responsibility call, you know, I have to take care of that, or I may be
at home, and then there’s doubt that sets in. You think, hmm, am I really cut out for this? So
there’s so many things that go on in our heads, and so many things that we have to take care
of, so many hats that we have to wear as women, as females, as female entrepreneurs, as
business owners.
So, but here’s the truth. The fact that you are balancing all of those roles and still pushing
forward makes you extraordinary. You are proof that resilience is not just a word, it’s a lifestyle.
It’s a lifestyle, because we have to live it every day. We have to do this every single day, and the
fact that we’re doing it makes us extraordinary. Women are extraordinary beings.
We not only carry life, because that in itself is extraordinary, but the way that we balance all of
these roles on a daily basis makes us extraordinary, and the fact that we are female
entrepreneurs makes us even more extraordinary. So let’s talk about the challenges, some of
the challenges that we face. So missing a business opportunity because family has to come
first, because let’s face it, family comes first.
We have to put our family first. That’s a priority, you know. Family comes first.
Everything else is secondary. We love our kids. We love our husbands.
We love our lifestyle. We love all of that, and it comes first. So missing a business opportunity
because of a family, you know, that’s a challenge.
That’s challenges that we face, and sometimes we feel guilt because of it, you know, because
we missed a business opportunity, but guess what? That opportunity could possibly come back
around again, so don’t worry about that, because your family comes first, but that is a
challenge that we face, you know. We struggle with the guilt of that. We also struggle with the
guilt of working too much or not working enough, you know.
That’s something that we deal with. We struggle with either working too much or not working
enough. That’s something we have to, you know, deal with in our minds.
There has to be a balance there. Sometimes we feel like something goes lacking if we don’t
work too hard or if we don’t stay the extra hour, but whatever we didn’t get to that day, we can
get to it the next day, you know, unless there’s a deadline. Unless there’s a deadline and
something has to be done that day, we’re gonna stay and we’re gonna make sure that we get it
done, because guess what? That’s what we do, but we also feel like, you know, if we don’t stay
and get something done, we feel guilt for not working enough.
Wow, that’s heavy. That’s heavy, because we are the business owner. We are, you know,
entrepreneurs.
We are the bosses, so it’s up to us to make sure everything gets done. So, we want to make
sure that we’re working enough to make sure everything happens. So, you know, we struggle
with the guilt of that, so we have to find a balance in that, and sometimes it seems like we
watch others move faster than we do, you know.
What does that mean? That means that while we seem like we’re moving at a slower pace and
other counterparts seem like they’re moving faster, you know, sometimes we feel a way about
that, but guess what? Everybody is on their own journey. Everybody is on their own path, so just
because it seems like someone is getting there faster than you, it’s okay. We shouldn’t even be
comparing ourselves to someone else, because their journey is their journey, and your journey
is your journey, right? So, don’t worry about them.
While you’re looking at them, you’re probably missing out on something that you could be
doing in your path, so let them have theirs, and you keep watch on your own, you know,
watching others seem to move faster while your pace is slowed by, you know, responsibilities,
you know. Just let them go on on their pace, but just pay attention to yours, pay attention to
yours, and just worry about what you’re doing, so that’s something else. That’s another
challenge that we face.
Just worry about your situation, and then you won’t be concerned about how fast they’re
moving. You won’t know. You won’t know the difference, okay? And so, another challenge is
days when revenue didn’t meet expectations, you know, and then you question, like, is the
sacrifice worth it? Is the fact that, you know, I’m working too hard, I’m not always home, is it
worth it? Because the money is not coming in fast enough, or the money is not what I thought
it was, you know.
Things take time. Things take time. Building a business doesn’t happen overnight.
There are some hits and misses, and there are some wins and some losses, so we just have to
know that it’s not going to happen overnight. Money is going to come. It’s going to come.
You just have to stay the course, but it’s going to come, but don’t get down on yourself if the
money doesn’t come as fast as you thought it would, and the revenue does not meet the
expectation right away, okay? But it’s coming. It’s going to come if you stay the course, and if
you continue to do the things that’s required of your business, okay? And now, there are a few
things that I want to share with you that’s going to help you keep rising, okay? You have to do
certain things that’s going to help elevate us, because if we continue to stay in the same
position mentally and not grow in our mind and with our focus, then there’s no way that we can
progress, or there’s no way that we can grow, so we have to do some things that’s going to
elevate us, okay? It’s going to elevate us and help keep us rising, so the first thing we’re going
to have to do is mindset shifts, and what do I mean by mindset shifts? Mindset shifts remind us,
we have to remind ourselves of our daily process, progress, okay? No matter how big or small,
we still have progress. We still make progress.
I am a person that keeps lists. I enjoy crossing things off my list. To me, that’s progress.
Even if I can’t cross off one thing a day, that’s still progress, and that gives me a sense of
fulfillment. When I can cross something off of my list, that gives me a sense of fulfillment, so
remind yourself daily that progress, no matter how small, is still progress, okay? You don’t have
to move fast. You just have to keep moving.
Let me say that again. You don’t have to move fast. You just have to keep moving, okay? So just
remembering that progress, no matter how big or small, is still progress, so make that mindset
shift, and the second thing is community.
Surround yourself with other women who get it. That’s major. Surround yourself with other
women who get it.
Build a circle that reminds you that you’re not alone. Oh, that’s major, because you’re not the
only one who is going through that. You’re not the only business owner who’s going through
those feelings, who’s feeling the things that you’re feeling, you know? Other business owners
have felt that.
They’ve been where you are, with the doubt, and with the anxiousness, and with the feeling
that maybe it’s not gonna work, the doubt. Am I doing enough? Is this the right thing to do?
They’ve been there, and they’re there for you, to encourage you. You need to surround yourself
with someone that could tell you you’re not alone in what you’re feeling, but they should also
tell you if you just keep going, it’ll get better, okay? It’ll get better.
The third thing is grace. Give yourself permission to rest. You’re not failing when you pause.
You’re recharging to come back stronger. Wow. If the wind goes out of your sail, you have no
choice but to stop.
If the wind goes out of your sail, you have no choice but to stop. You can’t go forward. You can’t
go anywhere, so give yourself permission to rest.
Take a break. It’s okay. Just take a break.
Reset. Pause, and then once you recharge, you come back stronger. It’s like your cell phone.
When the battery goes out on your cell phone, no matter how many times you pick it up and try
to dial or call somebody, it’s not gonna do anything because there’s no power. There’s no
power to it, so you have to plug it up, and you have to recharge it, right? And once you recharge
that battery to a hundred percent, oh, you can go another, what, day or two without charging it
again, and it works a hundred percent better. Same thing with your body, with yourself.
You have to recharge it. You have to take a break. You have to pause, and then once you take
that break and recharge yourself, you come back stronger, and you have to give yourself
permission to do that.
It’s okay. The hardest thing for us to do is allow ourselves permission to take a break, step
away, pause, because we really are afraid that something will maybe fall through the cracks or
we’ll miss something, but no, we won’t. We’re on top of things.
Sometimes things get overwhelming, and that, you know, that’s the reason why we probably
should, you know, take a rest or pause, but it’s definitely necessary, okay? The next thing is
systems. What do I mean by that? Use tools, planners, apps to help manage your business and
your life, because you don’t have to do it all in your head. You know, a lot of people are going
to, they’re using apps or they’re using, they’re getting away from paper.
I’m old school. I still like my hard copy planners and my paper products. I have to have tangible
items, you know, to see my schedules and my calendars, so I use tools, but it’s okay to use
apps.
I’m not against apps, but just use some type of system to help you organize your life, because a
lot of the stress comes from having to remember all of those things because we try to keep
them in our head, but no, you don’t have to keep them in your head. Write them down. Put
them in an app.
Put them somewhere where you can access it quickly. You can push a button and pull it up.
What do I have to do today? What’s on the calendar today? You know, you can push a button
and pull it up, you know, not just for business, but for your life.
You know, what do the kids have for after school? What school activities do they have? You
know, what games do they have? What sports thing they have going on? Because, like I said, we
wear many hats, and not just for our businesses, but for our family, so you want to be present
and want to be there for them as well. You know, does my husband have a function, an office
function or something? You know, we got to keep up with all of that, but the worst thing to do
is try to keep it all in your head. So, utilize the tools that are accessible and, you know, put it at
your fingertips.
For me, I like paper, so I’m old school. And the fifth thing is definitely to celebrate your wins.
Don’t wait until the big moment.
Celebrate sending that email, closing that deal, or simply making it through a tough week. You
did that. Celebrate it.
It’s okay to pat yourself on the back. You know, the song goes, encourage yourself. Sometimes
you have to encourage yourself.
Pat yourself on the back. I did a good job. I did that.
You know, you did that. Encourage yourself. Celebrate the wins.
I sent that email. I sent that tough email. I may have had to rewrite it two or three times, but I
sent it.
It went out. Cross it off the list. You did it.
I closed that deal. You know, all of those things, that’s progress. That’s a big moment.
That’s a win. No matter how small. It’s a win.
You had a tough week. You made it through. It’s Friday.
You know, you got the weekend coming up. Be excited about it. Be excited about it.
Don’t go through the whole weekend worrying about what you got coming up for the following
week. You know, take some time to enjoy the weekend. Take some time to celebrate the wins
that you had for the week, the current week.
Okay? So to every woman listening right now who feel like she’s carrying the world on her
shoulders, remember you were built to elevate. Let me say that again. You were built to elevate.
Yes, you wear many hats, but every one of them is a crown. So keep going because the lives
you’re touching, your children, your family, your clients, your community, are all watching you
rise. Thank you for joining me on this episode of Elevations.
If this message moved you, share it with another queen who needs the reminder. Until next
time, keep climbing, keep shining, and keep elevating. I’m Dr. Brenda.
Thank you for listening. Bye-bye.

The Spark That Keeps Us Going: Val Carson’s Unfiltered Take on Mental Health

Why This Message Matters Now More Than Ever

In her powerful debut episode of The Social Work Report, Val Carson doesn’t hold back. She steps boldly into the spotlight to deliver a soul-stirring message on mental health that’s both real and refreshingly raw.

After 26 years in the field, she’s earned the right to speak on what many still tiptoe around. And in true Val fashion, she doesn’t just speak—she pours out truth.

“Mental health awareness is so important and so much more a problem than people think it is.”

Val opens the show with love, gratitude, and energy—a signature vibe that makes you feel like you’re sitting across from a close friend who also happens to be a licensed master’s social worker with nearly three decades of experience.

This isn’t just about social work. This is about living.

Mental Health Isn’t Just a Topic—It’s a Lifeline

Val doesn’t sugarcoat the facts. Mental health is not some sidebar in life—it’s central to how we function, how we relate, and how we survive.

“Where you are, where your mind is, is just like taking your blood pressure.”

She challenges the outdated ideas that therapy is only for crisis or that asking for help makes you weak. If your stomach hurts, you see a doctor.

So why hesitate when it’s your mind that’s in pain?

In a world buzzing with distractions, Val encourages listeners to stop and ask:

Where are my emotions right now?

Am I coping well?

Do I even know what coping well looks like?

When the Kids Aren’t Alright

Val shines a spotlight on a truth too many ignore—our children are hurting too. And their pain often hides in plain sight.

“There’s a lot of anxiety among our teenagers—even our younger children.”

She warns us about brushing off their emotions and letting stigma block the help they desperately need.

Whether it’s bullying, performance pressure, or the silent harm of social media, our kids are absorbing more than we know.

And speaking of social media? Val doesn’t demonize it, but she does tell the truth about its double-edged impact.

“Cyberbullying exists. And it can destroy someone mentally and emotionally.”

It’s a wake-up call for any adult who still thinks digital drama is just “kids being kids.”

Technology Isn’t the Enemy—Isolation Is

One of Val’s most empowering takeaways is this: help is closer than ever before. Thanks to virtual therapy, support is available right on your phone.

No more waiting for rides, taking time off work, or making excuses.

“We can just almost get all the help we need virtually. Like you don’t have an excuse.”

But she adds—therapy only works if you’re honest. The key to progress is transparency. If you’re not being real with your therapist, you’re not being real with yourself.

The Power of Resilience

The heart of Val’s message beats with one word: resilience. She explains that resilience is simply how we bounce back—how we recover, reframe, and reclaim our peace.

“Resilience is a key element to our well-being.”

Whether you’re navigating trauma, loss, anxiety, or just life’s chaos, resilience isn’t about always being strong.

It’s about knowing when to reach for support, when to rest, and when to rise.

Your Mental Health Is Your Power

Val’s message isn’t just about acknowledging struggle—it’s about embracing the light within.

“Even the girl with the super smile is not always OK.”

She’s been through dark days too. But she keeps showing up.

Keeps smiling.

Keeps finding that spark.

And that’s her invitation to everyone listening: find your spark too.

Don’t wait for the breakdown to start the breakthrough.

Assessment: Finding Strength in the Struggle

Val Carson’s premiere episode is more than a podcast—it’s a declaration of hope.

She delivers an unforgettable reminder that mental health is not a weakness and therapy is not shameful.

Whether it’s you, your child, your friend, or someone you barely know—someone needs to hear this message.

Mental health matters. Not just in May. But every day.

Because the truth is simple: “We are who we are because of our physical self and our emotional self and our psychological self.”

So start today.

Check in with yourself.

Reach out.

Be honest.

Find your spark.

And remember:

“You don’t have to be sad all the time. You don’t have to have problems all the time. You can be a well person. You can have a well mind.”

This is The Social Work Report. And this is only the beginning.
