and now firmly planted in purpose, Vanessa Edmond embodies what it means
to become more with time , not less. Married to her husband, Mr. Tony
Edmond, a Canton, Mississippi native, for 25 years and counting, she describes
herself as his “co-pilot.” But make no mistake, she is a pilot in her own right.
Together, they have built businesses, served communities, and raised three
accomplished daughters who reflect the fruit of intentional motherhood. Dr.
Deaja McLain thrives in corporate America. Brooklyne, an Alcorn State
University agriculture business graduate, stands as a testament to educational
excellence. Allyson is carving her own path as a college freshman at Hinds Community College.

Edmond has been more than a stylist. She has been counselor. Therapist. Encourager.

As a passionate community advocate, she has led health fairs for barbers and stylists for the past
eight years, ensuring wellness within an industry that often pours into others without pause. She has

As co-owner of School Creation & Installation for 23 years, she and her husband have worked
closely within school systems, driven by a firm belief that “the youth are indeed our future.”

Today is Day 20, and we are honoring a man who changed how Silicon Valley sees Black consumers, Black founders, and Black innovation. We are talking about Tristan Walker.

Tristan Walker was born and raised in New York City and grew up in a household that valued education and curiosity. He went on to attend Stanford University, where he studied African American Studies. While there, he became deeply interested in the intersection of technology, race, and opportunity. Walker noticed something early that would define his career: Black consumers were spending billions of dollars every year, yet almost no technology or consumer brands were being built specifically for them.

After graduating, Walker entered the technology industry and quickly began working at major Silicon Valley companies. He worked at Foursquare, Twitter, and later at Andreessen Horowitz, one of the most powerful venture capital firms in the world. While working at Andreessen Horowitz, Walker gained first hand exposure to how technology companies are funded, built, and scaled. He also noticed how few Black founders were being supported with venture capital.

That experience planted the seed for what would become his life’s work.

In 2013, Walker launched Walker & Company Brands, a consumer products company focused on the health and grooming needs of people of color. The company’s flagship product was Bevel, a shaving system designed specifically to address razor bumps and skin irritation that disproportionately affect Black men. For decades, major shaving brands had ignored this issue, even though millions of Black men experienced it.

Bevel was not just a product. It was a statement that Black consumers deserved companies that actually understood their needs.

The brand quickly gained traction. Black men across the country embraced Bevel because it worked. The company also built a strong cultural identity, using advertising and marketing that reflected real Black life instead of stereotypes. Walker made sure that the brand showed Black men as confident, professional, and diverse, which helped shift how Black masculinity was presented in mainstream marketing.

Walker & Company did not stop with Bevel. The company expanded into women’s hair care with Pattern Beauty and into other grooming and wellness products designed for people of color. Walker built his business not by copying existing companies but by filling gaps that the industry had ignored.

In 2018, Walker & Company Brands was acquired by Procter & Gamble, one of the largest consumer goods corporations in the world. The acquisition was historic. It marked one of the most significant exits ever for a Black founded consumer products company. The deal gave Walker the resources and platform to expand his mission even further.

After the acquisition, Walker became the global CEO of Bevel within Procter & Gamble and also served as a partner inside the corporation. But instead of simply settling into a corporate role, Walker continued pushing for change. He used his position to advocate for diversity in product development, marketing, and leadership.

In 2021, Walker launched a new venture capital firm called Walker & Company Brands Venture Fund and later joined Andreessen Horowitz as a general partner. In this role, he invests in early stage technology companies, with a special focus on founders from underrepresented communities. He has publicly stated that his goal is not only to fund Black founders but to ensure they have access to the same scale of opportunity as their peers.

Tristan Walker’s work has helped change how Silicon Valley thinks about Black consumers and Black entrepreneurs. By proving that companies built for people of color can be highly profitable, he challenged the false idea that Black markets are too small or too risky to invest in.

He also helped change how corporate America views inclusion. Instead of treating diversity as a marketing slogan, Walker demonstrated that it can be a core business strategy that creates real value.

Today, Tristan Walker is recognized as one of the most influential Black leaders in technology and entrepreneurship. His journey from Stanford to Silicon Valley to building and selling a successful company has inspired a new generation of Black founders who want to build companies that reflect their communities.

His story is a reminder that innovation is not just about technology. It is about seeing what others have ignored and building solutions that serve people who have been overlooked.

Smith built one of the most powerful private equity firms in the world, Vista Equity Partners, and turned it into a multi-billion-dollar technology investment empire. But what makes Smith special isn’t just the money it’s what he’s done with it.

Born in Denver, Colorado, Smith grew up in a middle-class Black family that valued education and excellence. He earned degrees from Cornell and Columbia, then went on to work at Goldman Sachs. But instead of climbing somebody else’s ladder forever, he built his own.

Vista Equity focuses on software companies the digital backbone of the modern economy. Smith understood early that technology wasn’t just innovation it was ownership. Whoever controlled the code controlled the future.

And he was right.

Smith became the richest Black man in America, not through entertainment or sports, but through investment and strategy. That alone changed the narrative of Black wealth.

Thaddeus Myles here, family welcome back to Urban City’s Black Agenda, where we don’t just talk about Black history, we put respect on the people who are building it right now. Today is Day 12, and we’re stepping into modern Black greatness with a man who changed how the entire world sees Black storytelling.

We’re talking about Ryan Coogler.

Now listen… Hollywood has always loved our culture but struggled to respect our voices. They’ll borrow the music, steal the slang, copy the fashion, but when it comes to letting Black people tell Black stories at the highest level? Suddenly everybody gets nervous.

Ryan Coogler walked into that fear and flipped it upside down.

Born and raised in Oakland, California, Coogler didn’t grow up dreaming of red carpets and box office records. He grew up watching his community struggle violence, police brutality, systemic neglect and he knew those stories weren’t being told the right way. Not by Hollywood. Not by mainstream media. And definitely not with any kind of depth or dignity.

So he decided to tell them himself.

His first major film, Fruitvale Station, told the story of Oscar Grant, a young Black man killed by police in 2009. It wasn’t sensational. It wasn’t exploitative. It was human. It forced audiences to sit with the reality that behind every headline is a life, a family, and a community grieving.

Hollywood noticed.

Then came Creed a film that didn’t just revive the Rocky franchise, it passed the torch to a new generation of Black excellence. Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed wasn’t a sidekick. He wasn’t a stereotype. He was a fully realized Black man carrying legacy, ambition, and vulnerability all at once.

And then…
Black Panther.

Let’s just be honest. Black Panther didn’t just break box office records it broke mental barriers. It gave us Wakanda. It gave us African excellence. It gave us Black scientists, Black warriors, Black kings, Black queens and not as side characters. As the center of the universe.

And Ryan Coogler made sure it was done with authenticity, respect, and cultural pride.

He hired Black designers. Black historians. African consultants. Black writers. He didn’t let Hollywood flatten African culture into something generic. He honored it.

And the result? A billion-dollar movie that made Black kids around the world look at themselves differently. That made elders tear up. That made entire communities feel seen.

That’s not entertainment that’s impact.

And what makes Ryan Coogler so powerful is that he didn’t let success change his mission. He didn’t become distant. He didn’t sell out. He used his platform to amplify other Black creators, to build pipelines, to make sure the next generation doesn’t have to beg for opportunity.

He produces films by and for Black voices. He mentors young filmmakers. He insists on ownership and creative control. And in an industry that loves to dilute Blackness, Ryan Coogler keeps it unapologetically centered.

He understands something important:
Representation without power is decoration.

But representation with ownership? That’s revolution.

Ryan Coogler isn’t just making movies.
He’s building a Black cinematic universe in real life.

Thurgood Marshall: The First Black Supreme Court Justice Who Made Equality the Law of the Land

Thaddeus Myles here, family welcome back to Urban City’s Black Agenda, where we don’t just honor history, we put some respect on the people who forced it to move forward. Today is Day 11, and we’re stepping into the courtroom, into the Constitution, and into the mind of one of the most powerful legal architects this country has ever known: Thurgood Marshall.

Before he ever wore a Supreme Court robe, before his name was carved into the halls of justice, Thurgood Marshall was just a Black man from Baltimore with a brilliant mind and a deep understanding that laws can either protect people or be used to crush them.

He saw injustice early. Segregation wasn’t theoretical to him. It was everyday reality. Separate schools. Separate buses. Separate opportunities. And he made a decision that would ripple across American history: he would use the law to tear segregation apart piece by piece.

After graduating from Howard University School of Law, Marshall became the lead attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. That meant one thing he took on the hardest cases in the most hostile places, often risking his life just to argue that Black Americans deserved the same rights as everyone else.

He traveled across the Jim Crow South, walking into courtrooms where white judges and all-white juries already had their minds made up. He faced death threats, police harassment, and constant danger all for the simple idea that the Constitution should apply to everyone.

And then came the case that changed everything.

Brown v. Board of Education.

In 1954, Marshall stood before the Supreme Court and argued that segregated schools were unconstitutional. That “separate but equal” was a lie. That segregation didn’t just divide students it told Black children they were worth less.

The Court agreed.

With one decision, Marshall cracked the foundation of legal segregation in America. Schools. Housing. Public spaces. The ripple effects changed the entire country.

But he didn’t stop there.

Marshall argued and won dozens of civil rights cases. Voting rights. Housing equality. Fair trials. His legal record is so strong that to this day, he is considered one of the greatest lawyers in American history.

Then in 1967, President Lyndon Johnson appointed him to the United States Supreme Court, making him the first Black justice ever to serve.

And let me tell you something:
He didn’t go in quietly.

On the bench, Marshall became the conscience of the Court. He defended civil liberties, challenged racial bias, and reminded his colleagues that the Constitution wasn’t written just for the powerful it was meant to protect the vulnerable.

He wrote opinions that still shape the law today. He argued that equality wasn’t optional. That justice wasn’t flexible. That rights weren’t negotiable.

And through it all, he never forgot where he came from.

He once said, “None of us got where we are solely by pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. We got here because somebody a parent, a teacher, an NAACP lawyer bent down and helped us pick up our boots.”

That humility. That honesty. That understanding of community that’s what made him great.

Thurgood Marshall didn’t just change laws.
He changed expectations.
He changed what Black Americans believed was possible.

Today, every civil rights case, every challenge to discrimination, every fight for equal protection under the law carries his fingerprints.

So on Day 11 of Urban City’s Black Agenda, we honor Thurgood Marshall the Unstoppable Justice who made equality the law of the land.
